alright, i'm gonna try and take this from another angle to see if anyone bites.
lets look at this from a purely business standpoint. if you look at the monster hunter series, the first two didn't do so well until the portable came along, and even then that was only a huge success in Japan. from a business standpoint, these people want to get as much ROI as possible, therefore, you have to dangle this in front of as many people as possible. considering Nintendo's proactiveness in showing this game off in it's conference, as opposed to it being a footnote in the lineup, shows that they want this game to succeed as well, and i'll be damned if they aren't going to help Capcom in every way they can in getting this game out the door and into the hands of the hardcore (read: So, we now need to make efforts to constantly expand the player base by offering services and titles that can appeal not only to those who have never played games but also to those who play them hard). all things considered, Nintendo is likely to fawn this game to the public to attract 3rd parties and core gamers.
now, if Capcom were to stick to the plan and make the PS3 version, they wouldn't be so well off. with the PS3, there would definitely be a long and expensive development period, not to mention far less technical support in terms of networking and the like. they don't have nearly as much experience with the architecture and making a solid, bug-free game would be significantly more difficult. not to mention, in Japan, where the PS3 is performing disappointingly to say the least, the audience wouldn't be as large, and by extension, neither would be the ROI. it's just not fiscally responsible to have this game on the PS3.
finally, i would like to ask the people who bemoan this announcement this: what does the Monster Hunter franchise deserve more: prettier graphics and better effects, or a larger, more active fan base, because the Wii, as far as i can tell, is more capable of the latter than the PS3, at least right now. it wouldn't make many new fans on the PS3, but as you can see in this thread, it's already made a couple. the die-hard fans will still buy it, and who knows, it could still be good. just try and give it the benefit of the doubt until it comes out. then you can level it.
