ninteno gets a free pass

What free pass lol, Switch 2 was getting shitted on more than any console I've seen on here. There were days where half the threads on GAF were Nintendo doomed. So many people complaining about the prices it was crazy, they definitely did not get a free pass on GAF lmao.
I think they want to see this reflected in sales........ Which will not happen.

Ahh, okay I get it yeah that's never gonna happen then. Switch 2 will sell better than its predecessor and the big first party games even at 80-90$ are gonna sell tens of millions of units. Outside of a small vocal minority, nobody cares about any of this. If the game is good and carries on socials it's gonna sell.

You said it. If you do not feel this is anything but niche minorities ranting then I am not sure what to tell you. How many times do you need to see the faux outrage and storms in teacups on a certain game. That is being discussed on forums and YouTube hinting at mass boycot's etc.... Only to see the game sell as if nothing was being discussed in the first place. I can think of example after example..........

Gaming forums are filled with graphic and framerate obsessives that are notoriously hard to please. Nothing wrong with that as long as you realize the mass majority of consumers are not as bothered with such things.

My favorite example of this is the fact that no one seems to give a fuck about Nintendo censoring/blocking niche JP games, in comparison to the legendary outrage when Sony did it first. Heck, even Valve got way more pushback for their BS.

More than Xbox One? No way!
The TV TV Sports is still funny today.

I think the subtle difference with Nintendo getting a "free pass" is that the market rarely boxes them in a corner to tell them to back down.

PlayStation and Xbox frequently get their Concord moments, at best Nintendo have a failed console to force a course correction - which no longer seems to happen now that they have merged home and handheld console markets.

They get called out plenty, but just let the apathetic majority carry them beyond the issues.

I still suspect SW2 will only capture 1/2 or 1/3 of the previous SW1 market, but even if that happened they still won't change their practices IMO.

Thinking Switch 2 will only sell like 50-75 million lifetime is a pretty wild take at this point.

That kind of decline only happens when a company fucks up massively, and Nintendo haven't.
Heck, even the decline from the 360 to the XBO wasn't that steep, in spite of how badly MS screwed the pooch that gen.

Not really, I just don't see a lot of those families that bought SW1 in the last 4 years upgrading when the economics and age of those consumers is moving away from Nintendo, and many of us original Nintendo consumers aren't convinced with any game output in the post Miyamoto/Iwata-san era to feel a need to get a hybrid when they wanted a new dedicated Nintendo home console with better games.

I'm counting on 2/3rd's of the apathy Nintendo saw from Wii consumers going into the next-gen combined with economic pressure stopping Nintendo reaching a good enough price with SW2.

There's no evidence that consumers are "moving away" from Nintendo. Economics haven't stopped people buying $500 consoles, and the Switch's success shows the market values Nintendo hybrids just as much as home consoles if not more.

There's no parallel at all with the Wii-Wii U transition either, as consumer engagement with Switch 1 has remained strong and Switch 2 hasn't made any major missteps like Wii U did.

I was meaning that a lot of late SW1 buyers will be of younger kids that will have migrated to wanting PlayStation by the time they'd be ready to upgrade, and economics of the hardware that is sitting in the GB, GBA, DS, 3DS slot that isn't reaching those mainstream prices could cap the target market IMO.

The hardware is already dated, and that situation is only going to become a worse comparison against PS5/Xbox as we get further from launch.

The point about the Wii was that the console saturated its market, much like I believe SW1 has, and outside the Nintendo handheld core (50m-70m) and core gamers wanting to have all devices I can't think of how the SW2 differentiates itself from SW1 in the casual market that made up a lot of those Wii and SW1 sales.

Do you have any data to suggest that a lot of Switch owners will migrate to PS as they age, or is that just based on stereotypes?

People in 2017 claimed the Switch 1 wouldn't sell well because of it was less powerful than the competition, now it's one of the highest selling systems of all time, the mass market doesn't care about high end graphics as much as enthusiasts do.

Again, the Wii and Switch situations are nothing alike as audience engagement with Switch remained strong until its replacement, and Switch 2 hasn't done anything to lose a large share of its audience.
