Declassified tapes show Nixon scraped Presidency win by committing treason

By the time of the election in November 1968, LBJ had evidence Nixon had sabotaged the Vietnam war peace talks - or, as he put it, that Nixon was guilty of treason and had "blood on his hands".

Nixon feared a breakthrough at the Paris Peace talks designed to find a negotiated settlement to the Vietnam war, and he knew this would derail his campaign.

Chennault was despatched to the South Vietnamese embassy with a clear message: the South Vietnamese government should withdraw from the talks, refuse to deal with Johnson, and if Nixon was elected, they would get a much better deal.

The president knew what was going on, Nixon should back off and the subterfuge amounted to treason.

The president did let Humphrey know and gave him enough information to sink his opponent. But by then, a few days from the election, Humphrey had been told he had closed the gap with Nixon and would win the presidency. So Humphrey decided it would be too disruptive to the country to accuse the Republicans of treason, if the Democrats were going to win anyway.

Nixon ended his campaign by suggesting the administration war policy was in shambles. They couldn't even get the South Vietnamese to the negotiating table.

He won by less than 1% of the popular vote.

I love how people are saying Trump is going to be the same way.

Politicians are intelligent, devious and manipulative.

Trump knows "things".

Other world leaders are going to be doing things like this to us.

A long and colorful history of letting the Republicans sink into utter and complete treason on the logic that they're probably going to win anyway. That's the Democratic Party, alright.

After only just getting round to watching house of cards to completion it's quite fitting to see that frank actions aren't as cartoonish as some would suggest.

Serious question.

Do any Democratic political representatives come close to the downright evil that is the current Republican party?

I mean, you hear maybe the scandal of one guy who got a blowjob by a secretary or something like that but not "I betrayed my entire country for political gain and/or personal bullshit"-level like Republicans seem to regularly do AND still get to keep their jobs.

Excuse me, they are BOTH the same.

Bask in my glow, I'm so above it all and such an edgy, unique snowflake.

Then give me an example of one! That's what I am asking as an outsider!

The only party we keep hearing of this kind of shit outside the US. is the Republicans while when it comes to the Democrats its usually one thing and then retreated a million times by Republicans "Yeah but, they did Benghazi! And the emails! What about the emails!? Right!?"

I was bloody serious when I asked. When we have a fascist party here in Sweden (The Swedish Democrats) we can point straight to them and ALL admit that "yeah, they are the fascists/neo-nazis in disguise" but I am perplexed honestly how the Republican party is allowed to go on without any serious criticism to their conduct which is a constant violation of human rights.

Every Republican president in the last fifty years has either been completely incompetent or a total slime bag yet they keep getting elected. I think Eisenhower was the last Republican president who wasn't either.

Karma was not kind to Nixon, fortunately. Shit caught up to him and he'll be forever remembered as the only president to have quit his job.

Would have preferred if he had gone down history as the guy who lost to a Kennedy twice, but oh well.

Republican supporters simply don't care. They want things like abortion, LGBTI rights, social aid scrapped. It's clear they don't care how it is done, just that it is done. There are already people who justified Trump's actions by saying that the "Lord uses people like him to do great things". There's no rationality in this, except that people aren't educated enough to do critical reading, to look beyond at what politicians say, so they never know how they end up being worse for them. That's why this Simpson's image tells you enough about the regular, low-wage, low-education GOP voter:

It's clear as day for anyone who pays attention, but the regular voter does not pay attention.

He is mocking people that think both parties are the same, specifically the Hillary is as bad as Trump mentality some voters had.

I wont say democrats are the most benevolent politicians they sometimes do cave into Republican demands when it comes to war/capitalism and if there is no outrage on certain issues they tend to ignore it like everybody else. Before the 1960/FDR when the democrats were more conservatives and only cared about white people they supported nasty stuff like slavery/jim crow, etc. Hell the first Democratic President is Andrew Jackson and one can make an argument he probably is the most evil U.S. President in history.

Vietnam is honestly one of the most fascinating periods of history to me. Easily the greatest foreign policy failure in American history.

Ho Chi Minh at least managed to stomp Diem and Johnson and build a functioning society.

Iraq is still a basket case.

Latin America was a nightmare. Not enough attention is given in English-language history to the Guerra Sucia. Panama another debacle. And there was Cuba.

Hunter S. Thompson said it best about Nixon.

Let there be no mistake in the history books about that. Richard Nixon was an evil man -- evil in a way that only those who believe in the physical reality of the Devil can understand it. He was utterly without ethics or morals or any bedrock sense of decency. Nobody trusted him -- except maybe the Stalinist Chinese, and honest historians will remember him mainly as a rat who kept scrambling to get back on the ship.

Sounds familiar.

Not worse the Iraq War, because the war is STILL going on and there is NO end in sight, it also destabilized the entire middle east by removing Saddam . At least the Vietnam war came to an end
