I know the news story said a grand jury (which was presented with the evidence) decided to not issue charges. Why else would they do that unless evidence suggested that cops arrived, issued orders that the suspect ignored, and took down the perceived threat.

Outrage all you want. Walmart shouldn't be selling replicas of weapons.

Wal Mart sells actual weapons, and the video..i dont even know if Mr Crawford even turned around much he just falls over. Perception requires a mind and the cops failed to use theirs , they are responsible for 2 people dying because a lady died of a heart attack. All because some dumbass who called 911 while apparently standing well within firing range of someone with an automatic rifle lied.

What cop would assume they are in a hostile situation with a perceived threat with the facts presented? They should've found out what was going on.

PSA: Ohio is an open carry state. Had that been a real rifle, the victim would have still been well within his 2nd Amendment rights to carry it around the store. With no license.

Not defending the shooting but is it legal to open carry a rifle, not just a handgun? Also doesn't it have to be holstered, not in your hand?

You can open carry rifles, that's why there are those pictures of dudes open carrying at kmart and whatnot.

The store itself can ask you to GTFO, but it's not illegal.

I didn't know about the woman dying too. Two tragedies for absolutely no reason.

I hope the caller regrets it for the rest of his life.

It says that he failed to comply with their orders but in the video it looks like he doesn't even notice the police are there until they shoot at him. Am I missing something here?

This is part that I find most sketchy. It looks like the cops come around the corner and immediately shoot him.

Fuck you.

You, all of you, are responsible for this.

You're responsible for Trayvon, for Mike, for Cameron. For every last innocent black man, woman, and child that has been and will continue to be senselessly murdered without even the hope for justice.

The world would be a better place if every single one of you spontaneously ceased to exist.

Proudly debt free. If you need a couple bucks, just ask.
What's everyone talking about the caller? Is there a link to the call?

edit: what is a coin?

Even though the caller lied, these cops are supposed to be professionals. They shouldn't be trigger happy and only fire when necessary but it seems like the only thing our cops are trained to do well is hand out speeding tickets.

So,

Gunned down for holding a toy gun = Killing justified

Gunned down for holding a real gun = Murder

Stories like this make me want to cry. I feel so bad for his family and friends. Not once did I see a primetime news story on this.

Things like this will never change. I will gladly donate money to the victims family.

That part when the 911 caller told the dispatcher that Crawford "just point his gun at two kids", while nothing of the sort happens, boiled my blood. Please tell me what sort of orders a person can comply to when he doesn't even realise you're there, and you've shot him within seconds of turning the corner? They even said that Crawford pointed the gun at them. Fucking lying pieces of shit.

In Ohio, being gunned down for holding a toy gun would depend on how realistic the gun looked and how much the cops thought he was an imminent threat to another. I looked at the Ohio code again, and it states that they have to give a warning whenever possible. So the issue turns on whether they subjectively believed he was an imminent threat.

That doesn't impact the criminal liability of the people who filed the fake police report. They definitely should be charged.

My issue is with the 911 caller who convinced a police force that an innocent black man had a real firearm. My issue is with Walmart for letting a situation arise by putting realistic looking toy weapons on the shelf.

If the cops didn't issue any orders, don't any of you think the grand jury would say that? The article specifically mentions that orders were given.

So no issue with the cops killing someone. Got it.

You're asking for justice to be directed to the wrong people. Those cops were responding to a man with a gun that was played up by a racist on the phone with 911.

The 911 caller is as essentially guilty as someone who makes bomb threats on the phone. Charge that motherfucker.

Cops were justified. Don't understand why they thought someone should be charged.

Real talk. If you're holding a toy designed to look like a weapon and a cop gives you orders, you should do exactly what the cops tell you to do.

Crawford was standing there with the gun at his side.

Not pointing it.
Not brandishing it.

Just holding it with the barrel down.

Nothing he did in the security tapes was even close to illegal, even if it had been a "real" gun.

Where was the justification to shoot?

Oh wait, that's right, he was a black guy. Guess that was enough for the 911 caller and Ohio police.

The cop turns a corner, sees a guy on the phone staring at a pets food counter while hold a rifle pointed at the ground, and starts firing. The fact that Crawford was shot from the side, and how the cup shoots him within seconds of seeing him, indicates to me that no warnings were made. What kinda of trigger happy buffoons do you guys allow on to your police force?

The caller needs to be charged, and this idiot cop shouldn't have been cleared of all charges.

You'd think that for trained law enforcement it would take more than a hysterical phone call to justify a shooting. People calling the police aren't usually calm and collected. That doesn't mean the police shouldn't be. They fucked up just as much as the caller did.
And should be punished accordingly.

Justification to shoot? No. But there was absolutely justification to call 911. Carrying a gun on your shoulder with the barrel pointed directly behind you is dangerous. Waving a gun up and down is dangerous.

That doesn't mean the way the caller made his call was right. That doesn't mean the police assessed the situation correctly.

This is true, but (and I'm not sticking up for the cops here too because I think they were in the wrong and should be charged) if the cops were told that he was threatening people with a firearm, the open carry laws are irrelevant. The real issue here is the 911 call exaggerating the matter and the cops not assessing the threat correctly.

No, police just running in and shooting are the real problem in my eyes. People make crazy 911 calls. I expect the police to do more than run in and shoot a guy.

There are consequences for 911 calls also, is all I'm saying. Both parties are at fault, but I do think the final responsibility lies with the cops since they're trained to assess situations and respond accordingly.

Why is it that you never show up in these threads until you feel there's justification for the loss of a black life?

Are you sure it was about this case, or the Tony Stewart thing, where he won't be indicted for running down and killing a guy on the racetrack?

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sport...cted-charged-in-kevin-ward-jr-death/15712979/

Probably both, as excitement over one suggests they'd be excited over the other.

A poorly made 911 call negates the call itself being justified.

oh please, what about all the white folk that walk around with REAL fucking guns and don't get the police called on them?

There is enough doubt in the video that it would be hard to get a conviction. We don't know what happened when he was not on video and he was kind of swinging the gun up while talking on the phone. Doesn't appear to be in a menacing fashion, but it is a judgement thing.

I see no way the 911 caller gets in trouble. The actual call was more reasonable than it was made out to be when typed out. Just a bad situation.

I missed this when it happened. Wow, again, so sad for a senseless shooting.

Since the po-po came in with their ARs, its a good possibility that the 911 caller reported an active shooter. Just a bad situation all around. Why would he carry a rifle around the store? That's just not a good idea.

It wasn't a rifle...

Someone earlier mentioned that the videos do not capture the moments where he was shot, either. Just before and immediately after. (Edit: I guess that person was wrong - you just cant see the police since they are out of the frame) There's no way to tell if he was ignoring the police (Edit: didn't spin around towards officers) thanks to there being no audio. If that's all there is, no other witnesses, and the only other thing you have to go on is the officer's word, not really sure how to expect an indictment for that.

Like I said in the other thread, why the fuck are you allowed to pick a boxed air rifle (and a realistic looking one at that) off the shelf and walk it around the store on your own (where a customer might unbox it and walk around the store, or even load it)? How are these things not behind a case, and not walked up to the register by a sale associate? I guaranfuckingtee you they will be after this. If i were the guy's family, I'd be suing the shit out of wal-mart.

That doesn't mean this innocent man should have lost his life. That too..right?
