No live stream for Microsoft Gamescom media briefing

I think after their last public showing for Xbox One, at Evo2k13, where the audience boo'd and heckled the microsoft people on stage to leave, they might not be doing anymore live conferences for a while. I dont blame them, their public image is so bad at this point, best to launch and hope for the best.

But what am i going to do with all this tomatoes? *readies aim*

I don't know about you guys, but controlled PR is probably what MS needs right now. I think it could do wonders for them. Of course the down side is that fans don't get a live stream.

They could drop 5 XB1s in Japan at launch and there would still be 3 on the shelf at the end of the day. Believe.

Damn. But you'd think that they gotta try at-least.

what show is this from? Edit: found it but I wish I hadn't. I hope that idiot was sacked.

I believe it's a comedy sketch group, not a real interview.

I've always wondered if Microsoft could have a successful console in the Japanese market. I'm not saying the XOne is it, but just curious what it would take for them to be successful there.

Having good relations with developers.

That was more because they were holding up the most hyped game finals of the entire tournament. I would of been booing like mad as well. Fuck your cynical advertising.

Controlled PR worked great for Nintendo.

I just don't get it. Guess I am loosing my hardcore edge. I am at work during this stuff typically anyway.

It's not like we don't rely on press and second hand sources like blogs and PR releases anyway. All you may miss out is going: "o man people in the crowd really got pumped for that announcement."

Well, unlike Xbone threads, Wii U threads are not complete shit fest. But you may have a point.

In anything, not just video games, livestreaming something makes it an "event". The reaction in this thread and the continuous questions of "is the Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo conference streamed?" are evidence of the audience's thirst for information. Hardcore gamers are incredibly well informed consumers that particularly crave news and not having a stream is just going to make Microsoft look small compared to the competition - like it did for Nintendo at E3.

I'm surprised actually as previous briefings have been livestreamed. They really must fear the audience retaliation.

I really don't think there's anything they can do. There are too many smaller Japanese devs that'll throw out a game on Nintendo and Sony's consoles without so much as looking at Microsoft. Even if Microsoft moneyhats a handful of several hundred thousand selling franchises, like they did several years ago, it'll be meaningless longterm because their opponents will be getting multiple times as many games from Japanese devs that will never appear on Microsoft's console. It's a numbers game that Microsoft will always lose, unless Sony and Nintendo fuck up in a way so bad that it makes $599 and the Wii U's non-existent line up look like good ideas.

It's the same deal here with Western, PC-centric devs like Bethesda that have never made a game for a Nintendo console, only Nintendo's in a less dire situation because they've been selling consoles in the West for decades longer than Microsoft, and at one time they were pretty much the only contender in the US.

Are they streaming the Keynote by Spencer? The hands on media thing is for them, we'll hear about all that in time. The keynote is where I'm expecting news.

I agree, but that's what I find interesting: That Sony has stronger international dev support compared to Microsoft (talking via 1st party or exclusives obviously). I've stopped reading articles about JRPGs coming to NA, because it almost always means I can't play it on my 360 lol.

There's always the media to tell the truth

Why are they giving up every decent opportunity to market their console? It's so incredibly odd.

I admit I'm really surprised. Thought they might use Gamescom as a "second chance" to announce the system now that's it's so different than it was at E3. I guess they don't see the value there. Maybe they're worried about a hostile European audience or something? Who knows; either way, seems like a missed opportunity.

Well that sucks. Having my cousins over for a Gamescom night similar to what we did for E3. There will still be trailers released on sites throughout the night right?

I think XB1 will relase in JP this year as a surprise reveal at TGS. Wasn't CBOAT saying theyll launch at 14 countries?

That's not how you business.

People really need to get out of their "console warz" mindset and look at this from a strictly commercial perspective. There is no benefit to that strategy other than appealing to fanboys and sticking it to the enemy. You can't Sega Saturn a release, without serious consequences. Heck, the Sega Saturn was proof enough of that. Even if you were able to communicate effectively between developers, retailers, and internal PR staff, a surprise of that magnitude would never happen without a major leak. You can't ship thousands, if not millions, of consoles across the ocean without someone taking notice. Please let's put this fantasy to rest.

I was looking forward to watching it, had no idea it wasn't planned to be streamed.

Disappointing, and their reasoning is well...bad

Unless you don't have to ship those consoles and they're actually being manufactured in other countries

I guess, but that still seems like a big stretch, and an unnecessary burden for MS, just to get the jump on Sony. Which would have little to know effect, since the Xbox brand sells like poop in Japan (even with an entire year head start).

Why ever would they be afraid of a negative reaction to their media event?

This is probably a good move on their part honestly. Not sure if everyone knows this but Microsoft has had a few less than stellar public reactions to their media messaging this year.

Streaming is probably not the way to do it because it will be like watching a party that you’re not at

Finally! All I could think about during their E3 press conference was "man, how I wish I could witness this train wreck in person." I was peeved.

Clearly Microsoft never fails to put the gamer first.

Uh, I listened to that podcast, and didn't they say there's two events planned? A short event with announcements, and then the event described in the OP?

Edit: Yeah, that's pretty shitty journalism. Phil Spencer says:

"We want to showcase the developers and their games. So we're going going to have a really short stage presentation with some news, talking about some unique exclusive coming to the platform and Europe's biggest franchise."

"We're also doing an event in the evening for the community showcase," and this is the event that he says that it wouldn't make sense to have streaming for since it'd basically be us watching people play games.

I dunno about you guys, but I'm gonna pop me some popcorn, stare at a wall, and pretend I'm watching the MS conference.

Should be fun.

no one will pay attention to this.

Nice. Now the question remains, will the "short stage presentation" be streamed?

You may as well use this as an excuse for every single last press conference in existence where there's many people in attendance. Its fucking weird/strange on their part.
I seriously can't see how anyone is getting annoyed over this. Is it literally because you want one 30 minute chunk of PR (that nobody outside of us nerds would watch) rather than a bunch of individual game/feature streams?

Times have changed. A few years ago most of the previous DRM policies of ms would just slip right trough because the vast majority would not be aware of them. But times have changed and now much more people follow the news on these things.

I'm still surprised how allot of my casual friends knew about all the X1's DRM policies.
And the funny thing is that most people still think these apply because ms has never really announced it on a big scale.

So this excuse of not wanting to stream the event does them more harm then good imo.

Microsoft has nothing else to show... They already dipped in to the Xbone's 2014/15(?) line up for E3.

If accurate reporting took place I would mind less, but the last few E3's we got some really confused messages out of the press conferences. Journalists aren't always to blame because every platform holder wasn't always clear about their messaging in the past. Nintendo needed to introduce the Wii U twice basically, because nobody knew what was going on the first time and the Xbox fiasco were just the two recent big examples. But on top of that some sloppy reporting took place. Look at the Fifa Ultimate Team mode being reported as fully exclusive for Xbox this year, when anybody with half a brain knew that EA would never give up that money, and you could come to that conclusion from the wording of the annoncement. There are differences in "being exclusive" or "launching exclusive" for example as we all know. It's just better to listen for those nuances yourself than to depend on other people's reports.

It's MS so whatever they did/do/will do is bad,you know.
The event is for media even it's streamed, seriously, what "audience" they need to fear?

So one of the only times to really get the message out there before launch and they have decided against a conference? Bravo Microsoft, you astound me.

Fair do!
