No Man's Sky - Early Impressions/Reviews-in-progress Thread

Oof. I'm thinking that even a 60% Metacritic is going to be generous at this point. The game isn't "polarising", it's just plain bad.

I'm genuinely surprised (and pleased) by their honesty. Maybe taking days to review the game late works wonders.

Funny how delaying the reviews for the day one patch might have worked against them. Maybe some reviewers wouldn't have hit the "wow, this is repetitive boredom" point if they would have rushed to finish the review before release.

I can't remember any games specifically right now, but I know lately I have been more impressed with Ign's brutal honesty when it comes to their game reviewing.

Yeah, those IGN impressions are not good and we're seeing a trend. I can't say I'll be picking this up any time soon, if at all, but I do hope it does well enough so we can see a much improved sequel. If Hello Games can implement some type of quest system and deeper, more satisfying gameplay mechanics I'm sure they'd have a winner on their hands.

"Joyless slog". :(

"An unexciting rut" is a suitable description of what the core gameplay loop of this game seems like.

Yikes.

"At this point No Man’s Sky is in desperate need of radical changes in its gameplay loop to hold my interest. What’s here just doesn’t have enough good mechanics and shows no signs of evolving into something better, and right now is too frequently repetitive or frustrating."

These mirror my own sentiments as above. However I would say that perhaps playing in smaller chunks (unlike what reviewers are likely doing right now) might mitigate this effect a lot.

I've just remembered, one of the games was The Division. At least Ign had the balls to call out how average that over hyped game was.

Shouldn't that have been in there in the first place, though? Did Hello Games think a game where you walk around a pretty universe with some half-baked survival mechanics would be GOTY?

IGN said:
if you’ve harvested a giant lump of material and then walk a few hundred yards away and look back, it will appear to be completely intact. That’s had me running back and forth between tempting mirages of nonexistent resources a few times

Wow...

I mean, shit. Things you do to the planet only render within a certain distance? Holy fuck they obfuscated the shit out of this in demos.

When you're charging triple A prices for an indie games (£46 as l write) then brutal is what is needed if it's indeed found not to be very good.
I don't think an "indie" label really matters in the discussion for any more or less brutality.

It's a full-priced retail game, indie or not, and should be judged on that scale.

Always be wary of games that don't give reviewers an early copy.

I guess I can post again now that it's been proved I wasn't just trolling at the start of the thread - the whole patch PR was clever damage control, they delayed the embargo and tried to invalidate any sneaky early negative reviews

they played the consumer like a fiddle.

Congrats mate. You know you've "made it" once the threats start rolling in!

Then I made it in hearthstone years ago.

But but... huge patch notes... everyone said the patch notes were huge... wtf was that about seriously.

Oh I don't disagree. Perhaps getting all the procedurally generated systems working and in place was too much for such a small team that they didn't have time to create meaningful gameplay systems on top of that the first go around. I'd like to see them take another stab at it.

Absolutely 100% agree.

Show us this ... 'proof', since you are doubling down.

Or maybe the game just isnt very good?

No if you think the game isn't good you don't own it, or it's just not your type of game....Apparently.

I honestly think it's just a case of the honeymoon period with some people, the game has some shortcomings, that could be fixed, but as things stand the main selling point which is EXPLORING, just isn't fun for a few reasons.

I'd be shocked if many people can put 100 hours into this the way some people were talking before release. I remember it like it was yesterday "The universe is so large, I can see myself getting lost in this game for hundreds of hours"

So the overall consensus so far is mixed?

Seems mostly negative.

To add to that, the first few hours are generally well liked despite the flaws. Once the novelty wears off and you begin to see the seams of the game the experience is not so great.

Haven't jumped in yet, so I don't have impressions from a personal point of view, but reading some of these reviews and impressions is basically what I feared with this game. Once the novelty of doing those pretty cool things in the beginning wears off, there won't be much left. I know I am gonna get real bored of this game at some point, but I will still give it its fair shake by playing it first.

Wait for the review scores to roll in, ask yourself how many people would have paid full price for this if they had those scores.

Hope digital foundry do a patch comparison to highlight the minimal gameplay differences the "game changing" patch actually has

Ooh, a twist to the conspiracy theory: Fake patch notes. This thread sure is delivering.

While I do feel really bad for Hello Games since they put a lot of work and passion into this, I think critics do need to cut quite deep into the game. It's a fully priced title and honestly it doesn't feel like it has the variety or polish (both on a technical and fundamental level) to warrant that.

Overall, I feel really disappointed in the game. I was expecting to just be able to jump into my ship and hop between amazing and diverse worlds, but in the end the survival aspects ultimately get in the way and make the entire thing a drag, and throughout the time I've played there haven't been many interesting or diverse planets. I will say that the soundtrack is amazing though.

Giving the appearance that Sean was this honest to a fault, super likable, haggard guy working 20 hours a day, with a tiny, personable team that was doing the same seemed to get a lot of people to latch on. People forget they had Sony resources behind them. Sony was going to protect their investment, and they know damn well how to do that. Thus it looks like this was all misdirection, to the point of playing the dev as the victim. "Sean just wants you guys to see the real game, wait for the patch, can't you see he cares so much! Why don't people understand? You're hurting Sean!"

The borderline hero worship of Murray kind of freaked me out when I really started looking at the game a month or so ago, and hopefully it'll teach people that dev's are entities. HG is a business and Sony is sitting behind them making sure they make the right moves and that public perception is in their favor. To think those moves aren't carefully calculated when this amount of money is involved is insane; and Sean is the face of it all. The "Sean wouldn't do that" movement has served them incredibly well in that regard. With that said, I don't even really blame them. It's business and put into that impossible situation, I think most people would do the same thing. The situation grew out of reality quickly, and just kept going from there.

Should have a free roaming mode for people who just want to fly around and check things out. Chill out with the soundtrack and lose track of time.

and throughout the time I've played there haven't been many interesting or diverse planets. .

I think this is the key thing for me.

I feel no reason to want to even go to other planets.I appreciate that I've not given the game much of a chance but in my short time with the game, and from what I've seen elsewhere what I've experienced so far isn't going to change anytime soon.

That's actually what I was thinking. Of course, I think they need to make improvements the the world generation to increase variety and the chances of finding an interesting world. But a free roaming mode would be a nice thing to have.

Wow, there's a lot of negativity in this thread.

Definitely my game of the year so far. (sorry DOOM)

I still wouldn't recommend it to someone unless I knew that they were into survival games and/or old school sci-fi books.

Out of curiosity is anyone that's bashing the game an Asimov fan? That's the tone I get from the game.

Roll on the reviews, I'm expecting everything from a 2 to a 9 /10
