No Man's Sky: Foundation Update (v1.1)

looks fantastic. looks like what should've been there at release.

Platinumed the game, never made it to the center, just recently uninstalled. No urge to come back, sadly :/

I definitely see some issues with this: "There's a lot more to come, this is just the foundation!" strategy though.

Like, what exactly should people do now, buy into the game and then be in an on again off again relationship with it as more patches come out with months between each update?

Or wait until they come out and say, well, that's it for now folks, have fun!

How do people solve this situation with Ark, Minecraft, Subnautica, The Long Dark, Rust, etc?

If they release exact plans for what they want to do, people will hold every single detail of those plans against them, and the devs won't have any flexibility whatsoever.

If they promise nothing more, people will hold that against them, call them scammers, and ask what they're doing with the money from their 1m+ sold copies on PC/PS4.

Downloading now.

These changes seem pretty damn significant. I'm sure it does nothing to change the tide for a lot of people but I'm definitely going to check it out

Can't wait to see all the NMS headlines again. Gaming journalism was starting to get boring without them ;)

I'm not jumping back in yet but I'm very glad they haven't just cut and run.

Now give me ships with different specs goddammit!

You have to admire their resolve. They really need a marketing person (or a rethink) checking them from here on out because saying how much of a hard time they had has dampened an otherwise Stella message. I look forward to seeing them turn this around.

As for the people who are upset, no one forced you to buy this game, regardless of the marketing, the reviews told you what's up and a lot of people got refunds. They did lie, but they had boundless ambition, it should of followed the early access model, that was their main mistake. It looks like they are putting their money where their mouth is and everyone deserves a shot at redemption.

I dont understand how this is an issue.
You research on what you are about to buy, and you are free to buy whatever you want, whenever you want.

Just try to use your money to make yourself happy, and whenever there is doubt, dont buy it (yet)!

Predictablity was a huge problem, but at the same time, at least for me, there was a stark lack of things to do with the life on these planets. You could take a picture, shoot it, scan it, give it food (so it could return with an item or tell you were the rest of the shit is), and watch them fight amongst themselves. Sometimes they run around or eat corpses, but I never saw that.

Asking for deep AI is a little much, but I'd love to collect some species and put them on my ship. Or maybe for the bigger creatures add collision so they don't feel like paper cut outs. A quest system where you'd have to interact or find certain creatures would be nice as well.

Basically, they need to hide that loop better is what I'm saying.

Yeah, pretty much. Seems like they're on track to bring new stuff to do so we'll see.

As they have learned with the release, gamers will hold everything you say against them, and in some cases even threaten your life with it, so if I were them I wouldn't have shared any kind of plans or hints of coming updates until I was 110% sure of delivery.

They should not have even released the game without being honest about what their plans were. They didn't even need to say dates and details, just tell us what we were getting and to hold on for more. Instead they just dropped a pretty barren early-access game and went dead silent. At every opportunity to communicate anything to their fans they chose hyperbole and dreams up until now. This game is going to be a masterclass in how not to do PR.

Hmmm, maybe time to re-install?

Nah... not yet. In the future though, too many other games to play.

Looks good, but the damage is done.

I'm still gonna wait till the game is dirt cheap but i'm glad they are actually staying true to the free updates/content.

Very impressive update. Glad to see they're making big changes to NMS. I'm still going to wait a lot longer before jumping back in but it looks like there might be a really cool game waiting for me when I do.

Yep, the release wasn't handled particulary well, and there are lof of unanswered questions. But this update has been handled well, and you can see some lessons being learned from them.

There's a lot less of this kind of pressure when your game is released as early access, as NMS should have been.

But this now actually resembles a game instead of an overhyped tech demo. There is actually something of worth to do now.

For me the game died the moment it was clear that there was no MP though, so this update doesn't do anything for me.

Personally, this game should've been MP focused from it's inception. The fact that it's not still baffles me.
Because MP is difficult?

I agree it would be worthwhile, but that seems a step to far for a small team.

Realistically doesn't sound like it fixes many of the deep rooted game design issues that will show when you get into the loop again. It's certainly a start but certain elements of this like item stacks and having storage containers are things that quickly became a pain in the ass and needed to happen awhile ago.

"If you could have lived our lives"

oh get it over it you overselling shrill. Next time don't run a prerelease campaign of pure chaff and then release what was a relatively polished indie early access title at $60.

You lied your way to a fortune. No one will make the same mistake with one of your titles again.

Oh its time to forgive Hello Games for lying because they added the feature No man's Sky needed the most, base building!

Sarcasm aside, this update will have almost zero impact on how the game is played, and the flaws/lies are still there, it will make a not fun game less tedious to play while still remaining not fun.

I'm genuinely surprised at all the praises this "preview" is getting.

Most of this stuff must have been planned way before the launch. I wonder whose decision it was to launch the game as early as they did.

Probably Sony got sick of them delaying the game and forced them to release it when they did

Game should have been early access people wouldn't have been as (rightfully) upset about the full priced "finished game" they bought.

No man stans have dealt with NMS being the whipping boy for the past few months let them have this moment of hope that the game in another 3-6 years months the game will be close to the promised experience

Looks like a pretty solid update. Good on them.

The devs of Ark etc. usually announce roadmaps of what's to come http://steamcommunity.com/games/346110/announcements/detail/809908386661854074

You don't have to super exact about it, and in the instance that a feature gets cut you announce it beforehand.

To be fair, Sean always said pre-launch that Minecraft-style free updates was their game plan. But with Sony's juggernaut AAA marketing push, he couldn't really control that messaging as well as if NMS was a Steam game. And he also actually mentioned way back in August in the 1.03 update that base building was in the works, along with temporal AA and new cloud tech. It's just that it was drowned out for obvious reasons.

Yes. They may have been better off launching at a lower price and having a season pass because I can see these updates happening for quite some time to come

There are people who love these kind of stuff but i personally don;t see any point of this update. It doesn't sound fun at all to me just a bunch of busy work. No other players to trade with or play in coop, no threats to your base so you need to build defense system...

There is no goal at all just collecting things. It is probably just not game for me but i would love to hear why people like these things and for example hate same busy work in other games in form of collectibles. :D

Are we sure everything we see in that video is in the first patch or is it the goal they set themselves? I'm just being extra careful here..

Am I the only one that thinks that setting up a base on your own planet is at odds with the original premise of exploration?

Not necessarily : if they really changed things around with the generation algorithms and such, it could push you to stay on a planet for some time.

Looks good.

Could have been the redemption trailer if it ended with the player seeing another player.

And no, I'm not going to let them sweep that under the rug. It's past time that they address it.

That, and every space station now has a teleporter you can use to get back to your home base...

Use Terminus Teleporters in Space Stations to teleport to and from your base at will

Good for them for getting an update but for myself and many other it's too little too late. I'm not falling for this again. One and only game in my life I returned. Hope it'll be the last.

Wow, never thought they would actually do this much. If that's the start of what will come in the future, they are on a good way.

This really sounds more like the game I expected and will definitely will give it a try. Building your own bases and build harvesters for automatic ressource income sounds great, so it will be much more of building my own galactic company than farming materials over and over again.
