No Man's Sky "Path Finder" Content Update announced

Just bought it on sale from PSN and I'm sure I'll get some enjoyment out of it. Going in with low expectations. Still unclear how well this new build runs on default PS4.

Booted it up out of curiosity on Pro for the first time since the first month of launch...WOW have they made some serious improvements. The game looks more lush, vibrant, cleaner. Runs a lot smoother, too. Noticing a bump in frame rate.

Very impressed with the work they've put in.

Good on you for working hard to make up for things, HG!

Does anyone know if getting hyperdrive upgrades is any different in this update? I've yet to get any hyperdrive upgrades, and I've played for a long time. I keep getting mostly the same kinds of blueprints, but nothing for the hyperdrive.
I saw a hyperdrive upgrade at the first Gek nanite trader I came across in a space station.

I can't stand what their implementation of ambient occlusion did to the game. In addition to making grass look awful and 2D, it makes interiors seem FILTHY.

This (PC version) screenshot someone posted on reddit also highlights many of its issues:

This isn't how shadows work. It might be the worst use of ambient occlusion I've ever seen and it surely has negative impact on performance. Just... why? Why would they do this?

I fell through the scenery last night.

Whilst trying to get out I shot some Emerill and the game autosaved.

Now when I load up the game I'm underground in a cavern filled with Emerill that I can't get out of. I run out of resources before I can get out.

Is there any way to load a previous save file or any way I can reset my character back to a base? If not it looks like I'm going to have to start again.

So has anybody else started a new game with this update? Is the pacing and progression severely screwed up with the changes related to blueprints, or am I just too used to the old way of getting them?

I feel like I'm making almost no progress at all after 4 hours of play time, compared to before anyways, even though I've warped 5 times already. I've only been able to get like 3 new blueprints, and I can't even make any of the tech yet...

Feel weird not being stronger and more capable of surviving on the planets than I was 4 hours ago.

Also, there is definitely an issue with my scanner not picking up certain resources, I've noticed it completely ignore Plutonium, Chrystonite, and Titanium. Can anybody else check and see if they have the same issue?

Just got the third vehicle and how useless. Storage is worthless as movement is so bad. Using vehicles for more than a joyride has been really a waste.

A ship with storage is better and the vehicle is just a slightly mobile chest. Collect with ship and just dump resources into the large vehicle. Hover bike is the only fun one to use.

Controls are stiff and catching on trees is annoying. Broken geometry I understand but even the giant vehicle still gets stuck in trees AND gets stuck on slopes so is unusable on most planets. Certainly couldn't go more than around the corner from my home base before I got stuck.

I hope the next patch is just polishing and system-enhancements. Base missions are so linear and weightless in terms of what is expected. The vehicle missions in particular just shine a blistering spotlight on how barren worlds are due to such nonexistent interactivity. Creatures rarely spawn in in time to factor in and there's next to no combat motivation to even fight them if you stop long enough for them to get drawn in. You're still just better off using a ship to escape sentinels than deal with mobility limitation of vehicle AND less escape ability when you mine too much.

They have added new elements and forming and components for crafting, but nothing in those systems feels like discovery. There's no ah-ha moments like in minecraft. You create things, but the creations barely or don't even affect how you play. Mining laser and ship flight are still the go to methods of attaining anything.

Overall, the vehicles suffer from the same problem that travelling on foot has. There's no way to summon your ship to leave, so traversing back to the base is even more annoying than going back to your ship because it means you are even more limited in range of exploration since you can dock the vehicle into your ship.

I haven't tried the large truck but the little buggy smashes through everything, I'm surprised the big tank gets stuck.

I'm playing on survival and I think the balance for fuel makes the vehicles a very good alternative. Taking off in a ship costs 250 plutonium, a full tank on the buggy is 100 and because you're close to the ground you can pick up additional resources on the way to your destination.

The game needs more things to do but I reckon this update is a large step to an alright space survival/exploration game.

Do you have the bombs so you can blast your way out? If you see a hole in the roof, you can jetpack out for free by hugging the walls. The game keeps three saves, check if either is from before. You could also try looking for cave dwelling enemies and let them kill you. You'll respawn at a base or space station when you die, so there's that.

I don't know, my game hasn't looked like that on PS4. Those wall shadows look pretty messed up. Maybe there's some driver issues on the PC version? That second shot looks like one of the non-standard filters were applied or something? I've only been on a couple planets with the new update, but the colors on mine don't look that blown-out with the Default filter. And my shadows definitely don't look like that.

It makes me think the reason for Sony never throwing Hello Games under the bus was the release schedule, I wonder if Sean and Co had told Sony it wasn't ready and that Sony forced their hand in to a release and only now are we kind of seeing their full vision for the game.

Sony had no way of "forcing their hand." I don't know where people get this idea that Sony somehow had power over this game.

Started the game up after shelving it 4 months ago. Did. It want to lose my progress so just continuing on previous save

- graphics look more vibrant which is awesome
- finally seeing some awesome terrainshapes
- every planet is a shithole so I'm still waiting to hit that lush world so I can build a base
- photomode is awesome
- I'm kind of lost with all the resource / blueprint changes . First time I've seen resources I can't mine because I'm missing s blueprint
- still not sure how I build bases / cars but I'm still waiting for my perfect world so will eventually get their
- I'm now finding crashed ships / blueprints wayy below my level which I don't remember happening before
- starships are awesome
- finally saw a creature actually kill another one which I don't remember seeing before

Overall I was a huge fan of the original game and all these additions just make it so much more awesome to explore . Still hoping for abit more quests / combat scenarios but I am loving everything they are doing .

Can't wait to see what the next patch includes

Flipyap / Minamu,

Thanks for that - I didn't really want to start all over again.

I don't have bombs and there were no enemies about. As I fell through the secenery I guess I was somewhere I shouldn't have been able to get to so I doubt I would have been able to get out again. I tried blasting my way out with the mining laser but just got to hard rock beyond the Emerill and then ran out of resources.

Again many thanks, at least I'll be able to carry on now.

so summoning the vehicles doesnt work for me, it says ship not in reach. Im standing next to my ship ? or do they mean the vehicle must be near me ?!

I restarted after all the frustration I had with the vehicle quest chain breaking. It became impossible to progress, and I really want to try them out. Most terrifying realization after restarting on PC: The FPS problem has completely fixed itself. I'm back to a solid 60fps even in lush environments. So now I'm worried the FPS issues PC users have are tied to save games...

Regarding gameplay, yep, it's definitely different, but so far I'm loving it. The first omnitool upgrade I was offered cost over a million credits, so although I couldn't afford it I was happy thinking I don't have to upgrade omnitools and ships one damn slot at a time anymore. I can easily jump up 5-10 slots if I have the capital. And as for the changes to blueprints, I think I'm going to love that too. All previous sources of blueprints (wall mounted holograms, damaged machinery pod things, and even green supply boxes sometimes) now provide Nanite Clusters, and all space stations have someone selling blueprints in exchange for this currency. So now I get to choose which blueprints I want rather than relying entirely on chance. And thanks to the "friend level" requirements there's even an upgrade path of sorts there too.

I'm not having many issues with resources, except for Zinc. That's the one thing that seems to be rare in my starting system, so I'm always carrying a shield charge item or two from the yellow boxes you can find just in case. I've noticed Plutonium reserves don't show up on the scanner unless there's a large crystal as part of the cluster. Small and medium clusters are indeed ignored, which is annoying and might be a bug. I'm mainly eyeballing for those resources as a result, but I still have over 1000 of them in stock, and I haven't even got my warp drive yet =P

So yeah, mostly I love the changes. Seems luck plays a much bigger role with the upgrades, especially for omnitools and ships, but that also means we're free to make bigger leaps forward now rather than be restricted to a linear and incremental progression system.

So it's slower to start now? Because I started playing it for the first time ever yesterday and felt like I was getting nowhere. And I also had issues finding Zinc.

When it comes to obtaining blueprints, yep, but that was insanely easy before so if anything I think this change is a good thing. We get a lot more choice with blueprints now too, whereas before you got them in most things you looted, but whatever you got was random.

These things for example:

no-mans-sky-starship-multi-tool-exosuit-guide-damaged-machinery-ship-technology.jpg

Used to provide a random blueprint for each one you opened. Now you need to open several just to get enough Nanite Clusters to buy a single blueprint, but you get to make sure it's a blueprint you actually want (you often ended up getting copies of blueprints you already owned before). And looking for new ships and/or omnitools was easier before since they were almost always in your price bracket, with either +1 or -1 slots compared to your current ship/omnitool. That meant you could easily find an affordable minor upgrade, but now the slot count (and therefore the price range) of ships and omnitools are much more randomized, making it harder to find one that's an affordable upgrade, but at the same time also allowing you to make a bigger leap forward if you've earned a lot of cash recently. I think that's a good trade-off.

I don't think the core gameplay of resource collecting has changed noticeably though. It's still very much reliant on chance, with some planets more resource rich than others.

That sounds much better.

I guess I just got unlucky with my starter planet for Zinc. I did eventually find some but it took forever.

Sony had no way of "forcing their hand." I don't know where people get this idea that Sony somehow had power over this game.

If you provided facts and sources that would educate everybody about what you know that they dont it would be more productive and I would be genuinely interested to read more about the development of this game, especially since you must know information that most of us dont.

I applaud Hello Games here, they are working hard to correct their mistakes.

That shot looks like the default filter to me, but colors aren't really the issue in that one.

When the patch first dropped, I was hoping that my game/PS4 managed to glitch out terribly, but that's just what it looks like.
Obviously, it varies. Some planets have more even grass coverage, flatter terrain also makes it harder for these issues to pop up. Some lighting conditions make shadows barely noticeable and some paint a black halo around every grass sprite.
Some interiors make it harder to see, depending on the building style and position of the sun, but when it is noticeable, it's seriously the messiest ambient occlusion I've seen this gen, if not ever. The shadows are really overdone, low-res and constantly shifting as you move around. It's nearly every AO issue turned up to 11 - https://youtu.be/eqs48JpOSRw (and that's under favorable Default filter conditions, the shadows turned sickly green when I moved the sun and Vintage made them look like dirt).

It's a real bummer and I just can't get used to suddenly encountering some of the sloppiest graphics in an otherwise beautiful game.

Yep, the AO is pretty horrendous, and the shadows on console are bad, but given the scope of the game I can't get too mad about it. Especially if the latest patch has smoothed out the performance on PS4. Even on PC I don't mind the sub par visuals, but I'm pretty annoyed that the game now runs worse on PC than it did before the patch. That's not okay.

I'm very much looking forward to a sequel on PS5/PC. If they can keep building on this game for the rest of the current generation, and then ship a full blown sequel implementing everything they've learned and massively improving their procedural planet tech so there are multiple biomes for each lush planet I'll be really happy. I'm still amazed with what they've managed to achieve on current gen console hardware with the current game, and I don't think they can realistically push the visuals and environmental variety much further without better hardware.

Playing this on the Pro and love what this has done to improve the performance of the game.

The new changes to the graphics work well in some cases and not so well in others. I really like the additional detail on non-organic items but I do miss the flatter shading in the natural environments. As you can now play with different graphical filters enabled I'd really like them to add for more options so that we can customise the look more.

I do think this would really benefit from a FoV slider.

Very happy with the update, though.

But that's the thing - the game looked better without it.
When ambient occlusion can ruin its art the way it does, it really isn't worth it for the little gains in cases where it does work correctly (if only graphics settings weren't a weird taboo on console...).

Did they add multiple save files in the last update?

It's been so long that I think I want to start over again, but I also don't want to lose the progress that I have in my original save

You get one save slot per mode - Normal, Survival (hard mode), (hard mode with) Permadeath and Creative (unlimited health and resources).

Booted up on the pro this morning and liked what I saw. If they can get it to a steady 60 fps maybe we could get a VR mode someday!

Looking forward to returning later this year. I wonder if they had been able to hold off release for another how the game would have been received. I assume they were running out of money and had to shove it out the door.

I also wonder how long they can do these free content patches before they start charging for something. I could see micro transactions as an unpopular but effective method of keeping money flowing. I wouldn't like it but something has to give at some point. Unless they can make enough money from other projects to keep this one going.

So I haven't played much, but is there any point to the vehicles, or are they basically storage units with wheels?

Okay so I do like bombing about in the buggy, but it does have a big story flaw. To find quest-related depots, you need to use the scanner on the buggy to find them, however it#s quicker and more efficient to then jump in your ship and fly to the location. This makes the buggy a little pointless and more of a nuisance than anything - jumping in and out to use the scanner.

It would make sense if the buggy had to be used in places where a ship couldn't go - like underwater, top of a mountain etc. As it is, certainly throughout the quests, it doesn't really serve much purpose.

EDIT: It would actually make more sense to start the game with a broken buggy that needed repairing, rather than a ship. Then with your buggy, you explore the planet you're on until you find a downed ship you can repair.

So, coming from someone who never put more than a few hours into the game, How does resource management work out for the buggy? Like, for me, the big thing keeping me from taking off and landing everywhere is the fact that I need to be judicious about my Plutonium usage because I don't want to get stranded in a place where plutonium is really rare and have to spend hours looking for a few shards so I can refuel my launch thrusters. If the buggy takes Th9 or something that's a much easier sell because you can find that all over the place, but outside of looking for a barren planet without much else in the way of minerals, I don't usually find a lot of Plutonium.

oh goodie, I'm at 4 mill units and found a slightly bigger ship for 65 mill - the game really needed more meaningless grinding. I hope they add special keys to access space stations in their next update, just to turn another minor thing into a 15 hour fetch quest...

They switched to billboard sprites for the grass... 😕

Predowngrade grass was one of my favorite things about this game. Can we get it as a toggle on Pro at least?

I'm not sure if I'll find a direct answer by looking through the OT but is the game playable right now? I tried the game at launch and it was full of glitches and framerate dips. Thanks.

They've always used billboard sprites. The game's color palette and rendering style simply did an excellent job hiding it. The effect is now ruined thanks to terrible ambient occlusion implementation which highlights every sprite.

The buggy is 100 plutonium for a full tank, and that can drive about 10 minutes. I think there's a lot more plutonium than you're aware of when you're driving at ground-level. You've got to consider before this update you were either walking at ground-level or too far up in the air to see.

I find this a really good alternative for survival mode when your ship lift-off is 250 plutonium.

Was it really? Interesting.

Whatever it was pre patch I never saw ugly x patterned grass from above or individual bunches of blades rotating with my view. Sean fix this plz.

It actually varies per planet. They have a stable of grass type and certain ones billboard or rotate with your perspective and some are cross hatched. Most if not all tree foliage is billboard.

Fuck spinning grass but I do understand the complaints for when you're elevated and can see the cross hatching.

How do you build bases on new planets? I go to other planets and it won't let me build a base. Do only certain planets allow it?

Changes & fixes currently on Experimental (Path Finder)

Hello,

Thank you to everyone who’s played the Path Finder Update so far! Your feedback has been incredibly helpful - please do keep it coming.

Soon we’ll be releasing a patch to the experimental branch. Here are the patch notes:

  • Exocraft Geobays can now be crafted on any planet - this means vehicles can be summoned anywhere (whereas previously, vehicles could only be summoned on your home planet).
  • HUD markers have been added to allow you to easily navigate back to an Exocraft Geobay
  • Fixed a bug that caused vehicle weapons and mining lasers not to drain charge
  • Fixed a rare issue which could cause the Starship cockpit to vanish when exiting
  • Fixed some freighter door texture issues
  • Fixed a rare crash when scanning from a vehicle
  • Fixed a rare crash when feeding creatures
  • Fixed an issue which caused weapons to miss-fire when using Plasma Launcher
  • During warp the quick menu now hides properly as intended

As soon as we’re happy that these changes are stable, we’ll go ahead and roll out to the live game.

We'll keep this thread, and will update it as we make changes to experimental. If you experience any issues while playing on experimental, please do let us know by posting below.

Thanks!

Build a scanner (d-pad up) and search for a base. If it doesn't let you do that, the planet doesn't have bases.

I just found one by the sea, beautiful. Gonna spend some time in creative mode to prototype some cool looking bases.

Also, anyone found this freighter yet? (or another one with that specific nose shield?)

it was in the game pre-Foundation Update, can't find it anymore :<

Photomode is awesome , I love how it shows off the scale of your freighters.

One question though I had a kill the pirates mission which kept going forever and then they warped in an enemy freighter which totally hammers you. Do the enemy ships just repeatedly warp in or is there and end to it? Do you have to kill the enemy freighter first ?

Also can my freighter use its guns to help attack pirates etc? I spawned it in but it didn't seem to do anything .

I really wish we could pick and choose whatever planet we wanted for our Base.

I keep finding awesome planets I want to call home, but when I scan for a base habitat area, it's usually on the next planet over that's dead and lifeless or has a horrible stormy atmosphere.

My #1 gripe with the game right now.

I also wish we could get terraforming vehicles in the game, like bulldozers and diggers, so we can sculpt out land for a base.

have you considered going to the bad planets and then scanning?

Every planet has multiple sites where you can build a base.

Every planet has multiple sites where you can build a base.

I ran a Habitat scan 5 times in a single system of 5 planets and it only shows the same 1 habitat on the same planet.

Do I need to scan using a different scanner each time or something?

I'm using the scanner you can build yourself with some minerals.

EDIT - or do I have to "discover" that one first before a new will will show up?
