No Mans Sky | PC Performance Thread

I spent the last couple of hours going through the game's entire post processing component, disabling everything, and there's nothing to indicate anything beyond the usual muck of deferred rendering. There is a combined depth of field/tonemapper effect which you can see for an instant when the world first loads, but it's completely disengaged thereafter. There's chromatic aberration, which can look like doubled pixels, but I've turned that off. There's a generic blur effect but it's inactive.

The game does often look very soft around the edges, but this seems to be exacerbated by the deferred lighting more than anything. Look at Mirror's Edge Catalyst if you want to see the horror of deferred lighting meeting shader aliasing.

Bizzare.

I've owned Catalyst since launch, and yes it's very soft, but it's the unmistakable softness of TAA; I never once suspected it was due to it running at a lower resolution. No Man's Sky, for whatever reason, looks plain low-res at times. Like I said in a previous post, I had suspected it may be a cheap dynamic DoF that was the culprit, but if you're saying you've been able to disable every effect, and it hasn't done anything to help, then it must indeed be down to the renderer itself. I wonder if the game's use of voxels has anything to do with it?

Anyway, I've accepted it at this point, and have actually begun to play the game. I honestly wasn't expecting much, and I was right not to, it's pretty simple. That said, what it does, it does well so far; a surprising mix of relaxation and obsessive compulsion ;p

Weirdly, my FPS counter disappeared through steam. Any ideas? Doesn't matter if overlay is on or off

Also, after putting in 30 + hours on PS4, I much prefer the PC version. Smoother, quicker, and I can use the Xbox One S Controller.

edit: Never mind just enabled through GeForce Experience.

Ha, I had the opposite problem, it doesn't recognize the GeForce experience FPS counter for me, only the Steam overlay. I think this game has quantum-state bugs.

My mouse doesn't have a dedicated middle mouse button, just a button 3 and 4.

Because of that I can't drop anything from my inventory.

Other than that, i've been mostly fine with frames, but it's still way too jiddery for my rig (i7-5820K and a GTX 1080 with 16GB of RAM)

Using the experimental build (original version was stuttering like hell) and I get fairly smooth 40+fps, with some tearing despite forcing V-Sync in AMD control panel. It's playable, which is the most important thing. Would like to improve it tho.

Specs:

Sapphire R9380 4GB OC
Intel i3 6100
8GB 2666mhz RAM

Actually really enjoying the game, went in with minimal expectations and pleasantly surprised.

So, another success story here as a result of moving the game from SSD to HDD. Initially this didn't seem to make a difference, but I had already switched to the experimental branch and that just wrecked performance completely. After switching back to regular and then moving the game from the SSD to my HDD, all the stuttering has stopped for me and the game is buttery smooth 99% of the time. No other fixes had worked for me and I really tried them all.

GTX 970, i5 2500K, Win 7. For anyone with similar specs and with the game residing on an SSD, this might fix it.

So here what I found

the MAX FPS setting sets the INI file to 160FPS. But, its broken.

At default "max" setting I am having 57fps. However, when I set the INI to an absurd value such as 1000, My game increases from 57fps tp 70fps on my save point.

TLDR: Setting the INI fps value to high values (1000) increased my FPS to 70 (a 10 fps increase). Setting the value at 160 (default) drops my fps to 57fps on the same point. The setting is broken.

So weird. I'll try this later after work. Worth a try.

just ran the game for the first time.

my sepcs: gtx 1080 g1 gaming
4790k
windows 10
16gb of ram.
playing at 1080p.

launched it and disabled the fps cap, goes to about 140-160 fps. MASSIVE STUTTER AND TEXTURE POP IN and its so freaking blurry i looks like crap.
trying some of the tips to see if it fixes the stutters.
got the game on gog.
will edit if the stutter is fixed

Fwiw, the combination downsampling, and LumaSharpen through reshade is giving me the best picture thus far.

1. The "pop in" is the procedural generation in action
2. Downsample. The shader aliasing at 1080p makes the game look both soft and jaggy at the same time.

Make sure you disable vsync and use the Nvidia control panel to turn it on

There's something funny going on with the controller.

When I use the mouse, panning the landscape is smooth, no problems

When I pan with a game pad it's stopping and stuttering, weird.

The framerate cap works fine on my system. I did notice the "160" in the INI file, but mine regularly goes over 100 when there's not much going on (144Hz monitor). Granted, I'm brute-forcing it with a GTX-1080. Little stutters and hiccups here and there (entering and exiting the ship, etc, just like everybody else), but overall performance is pretty solid for me. I'd still like to clean up the IQ and UI, though.

alright it does look quite a bit better downsampling from 2k, and fps is high.
when i move to any direction or simply turn to mouse or kill a tree, theres a stutter, sometimes the entire screen literally freezes for a sec, its terrible.

I did all this:
Disable Gsync
Install beta Nvidia Drivers
Set FPS to max

and now i get good performance, but i get a hard system crash every 5 min where i need to reboot my system.

Please help.

My specs,
4690K
16gb Ram
SLI 970

Yeah this has been driving me nuts, and I've figured out why:

Next time you're playing, tilt the joystick to the side and hold it completely still. You should get smooth motion. Now try the same thing, but tilt the joystick up or down slightly while you're panning the camera. Notice how it stops momentarily? Hopefully they're aware of this.

Did you disable VSYNC in game and force it through nvidia control panel instead?

Anyone tried this patch yet?

Got so excited, it was running well at first.

Then I moved.

Overall this patch made the game ALMOST playable for me, but for whatever reason every 25 feet or so I walk, the framerate dips from like 48-45, to 12-18 fps for like 5-8 seconds, then bounces back. Rinse repeat, without any major changes in scenery.

At least its progress, hopefully Hello Games gets this all sorted out, because although I am enjoying my PS4 copy, that extra IQ and FoV are soo damned good.

If running 1080p, what kind of framerate could I expect with:

i7 920 overclocked to 3.9 ghz
GTX 770 2GB
12 GB RAM
I have the same gpu, bit newer cpu but similar speed, and 8 gb of ram, and I get 60 most of the time with textures on medium and everything else low. Haven't experimented with higher settings too much.

I don't have one.

Do the game-ready drivers help much or is it small gains most of the time ?

Not sure what Nvidia can do about the engine causing CPU spikes that kill the frame rate -from 100 fps to the 20's in a second. It looks like their engine sucks. Doesn't look like an easy thing to fix. Hope I'm wrong.

You mean Hello Games? Valve has no say in what publisher of the game does with is when it comes to price or if EA or not. Valve just somewhat makes sure game starts and is above board legally.

Valve can pull games from Steam, so I'm pretty sure they could say, "by the way, you need to change this to Early Access or we're taking it down".

I'm saying Valve because these Hello Games blokes seem shady as fuck from how they've released this said nothing about the state of the game.

So it's got to be something with the way it's generating the terrain or something. As I said every 25 feet or so, the Framerate tanks, but if I stop in my tracks, and wait a few moments, the Framerate stabilizes completely.

So frustrating, but I feel like this means there has to be a fix imminent. It's such a repeatable problem. Is anyone else's game acting similar?

Resolution and VRAM utilisation / GPU utilisation?

for sh*t and giggles, I tried running the game w/ my laptop not plugged in and used the GeForce experience battery boost settings...which is pretty much everything at low and at 1360x768 resolution and it runs smooth. What's strange though, it looks pretty good as well. However, you can easily tell Antistropic Filtering (AF) was at the minimum (1). Figured, heck with it, grab another coffee and increase my settings from there and see if I can get a smooth performance.

I increased the res back to 1080p, increase everything to medium. Also, I turned off Vsync for NMS.exe in Nvidia control panel. Really smooth and runs great..only stutter I get is when I look around real quick..game looks much better too.

Try 2 more things, increase texture detail to high and leave the rest at medium as well as increase AF from 1 to 2..see how it does...Still runs fantastic and looks fantastic now.

So heres my settings for those w/ a 960m. Keep in mind, I do have 16gb of RAM, SSD, & a I7 6700HQ. Also an 960M 2gb video card.

Window Mode: Full Screen
Resolution: 1920x1080
V-Sync: Off
Anti Aliasing: FXAA
On-Foot Field of View: 75
Flight field of View: 75
Gamma: 128
Antistropic Filtering: 2
Texture Detail: High
Shadow Detail: Medium
Generation Detail: Medium
Reflection Quality: Medium
Show HUD: On
Max FPS: Max

One thing you need to do outside of the game is turn off Vertical Sync in Nvidia Control panel. That seems to make a big difference.

Edit: This is all on a planet with a bung of grass, trees, & Hills. Have not gone into space yet.

Have you tried moving the game to an HDD if you're on an SSD?

Well I initially had it on my HDD and moved it to my SSD, which may have given it worse/the same Performence, but it was so bad I couldn't even tell to be honest.

Reinstalling now on the HDD again to see if it improves now that the experimental patch has improved my Performence so dramatically.

(Love how small this game is, can delete and redownload and install in under 4 minutes.)

You could also use Steam Mover. No need to delete/reinstall etc.

But did it start stuttering when you used the mouse? Someone was asking why performance was worse using mouse and keyboard compared to the joypad.

It was. Not sure why though.

But now that I just changed my graphic settings, using the mouse should be much better...don't have my mouse on me atm but used the laptop touchpad and it was much smoother with the new settings.

I have the shadow detailed lowered, maybe that's the cause of the all the mouse stuttering, etc.

Huh.

Well the beta patch fixed my stuttering and it no longer drops to 40fps when looking at my ship inventory. I'll see how long this lasts.

First planet I land on and it's dropping to 30fps.

Well, it fixed some of it at least.

I think it's probably your CPU. Try monitoring it for spikes.

A feel like a 3770k shouldn't struggle that intensely? Especially compared to my PS4 CPU no?

Also, playing on the HDD again now. Same dips, crushes down to the teens every 25 feet for a few seconds, then stabilizes.

Also, just tried monitoring be CPU, doesn't seem to be changing untilizarion at all during the dips. It actually maintains super Low utilization at around 15% and clocks around half speed..
