No Mans Sky | PC Performance Thread

I bet the devs wish they could just walk away from this mess. Now they're tasked with not only fixing a completely broken PC port, they also have to mend the PS4 version AND add all the new features that Sean promised, all no doubt with a cloud of negativity hanging over the studio and infamy on the internet.

Or maybe they made so much money from this game they don't care.

They likely already made their money back and can quickly hire some technical support.

Totally agree about Sean's constant references to their small team. It's like bragging that you're going to run a marathon without doing any training. It's great to have ambition, but you have to be realistic and reasonable. His team must be devastated.

Yeah, I can't imagine. You can tell they all busted their asses for years, and then to see "mostly negative" reviews on steam, and a 69 metacritic score as of now. I mean that shit has to be heartbreaking. How quickly shit changes within the span of a few days. I absolutely feel for these devs, but I agree, hire some more fucking people.

Wanted to play all weekend.

This was the game to end all other games.

105 minutes played on Steam.

Deciding to get my money back or wait.

Whole weekend was planned. Around. NM fuckin S.

The game to end all other games?
How did anyone get that impression from what has been shown since 2014.

GTX 970/i7 4790k user here. Game stutters a bit when it's generating the planet around you, like when you're flying or when you first start the game, but otherwise is a mostly stable 60 FPS maxed out at 1080p.

Thank you very much, I was thinking about buying the game for my PS4 because it would be more easy for me to record/stream but the retail price in Mexico is way to high and the Steam version is 50% cheaper, anyway sadly I can't buy it right now but thank you for your report

I'm really disappointed in everything I'm hearing, but I'm buying this anyway. This whole cycle from announcement to release has been too intriguing not to see what the fuss is about. And I have hopes they will do their damndest to make it better.
this is an amazing paragraph

4770k
970 stock clock

250 Evo ssd
Win 10
Latest drivers

Game runs at max settings at 60 fps. Had to turn vsync off for the stutter, and it occasionally dips in frames, but it's pretty solid compared to what I've been hearing.

Sony isn't credited, so no.

How do I enable that? Sorry, PC noob. Aliasing is so bad right now.

It's one of two AA options in the Graphics menu. Just hold in A/LM over the arrows to change the setting.

I think you have to die in real life and magically resurrect for the changes to take effect, though.

Get your money back. You can always rebuy it at a later time if things improve.

I tweaked some things, turned off fps limit, switched to borderless window and it seems to have cut my stuttering down some.

I'm gonna get drunk af and don't refund the game in those 13 days waiting for something magical to happen.

3770k@4.4, 7970 GHz 3GB, 16GB, WIN 10 64bit

Can't hit 60fps even on 1280x720 with lowest options. Game on SSD still stutters but for some weird reason, Cities Skylines really pushes my CPU to it's limit with all the simulation but this does not.

I would think that procedural generation needs some math power. There must be problem in the code and how it's pulling the info or something. Pulling outta my ass.

Guess I'm one of the lucky ones. Game is running a semi-smooth 60 fps on my MSI GT80 laptop with very few instances of stutter.

I even tried 4k and while the framerate was pretty slow it wasn't stuttery by any stretch of the imagination.

Just to clarify, I've set FPS limit to Max, AA to FXAA, AF to 16 and everything at high. Resolution is 1920x1080.

Ok, update, the game is still stuttering like crazy, the audio stutters, the visuals stutter, it's not all the time, it's infrequent but very jarring, it's hitching is the best way to describe it, I have to refund it unfortunately but I will say this, I don't want to because the game itself is fucking amazing quite frankly, I just flew from one planet to another and the music and everything about it blew my mind.

I just, I just can't continue with the performance.

Should i get it?

There's a "GSYNC" setting in the graphics settings xml that defaults to "True". Don't know if this has anything to do with stuttering for non-GSYNC monitors such as my Bravia.

Was talking about the PC version. Booting up doesn't show SIE.

Oh, you mean from the start of the game? Yeah, that I figured. I'm talking about the credits you can view from the Pause Menu. Initially, it shows just the Hello Games team, but if you wait about 10 seconds, then it shows that the music is made by 65daysofstatic & eventually it starts showing SIE personnel.

Maybe it's time they hire some more fucking people, then. Boasting about how you only have 10 people on your team does not stand when you're releasing a product with this much ambition/marketing on two platforms. They've got the sales, time to ramp up that team.

I wonder if DF will get their analysis of the PC version out before/during the weekend. Sure would love to see it.

In reality, that's unrealistic.

Adding people mid-development, especially with proprietary design, is extremely difficult and time consuming as the ramp up costs the team many months of relatively little productivity from the new employee.

Hello Games is also entirely self-funded, so it may also be unrealistic from an economic standpoint.

tl;dr development is difficult and rarely as reductive as 'just add new employees.'

No PS4? Or did you just hold out for the PC version? I've been very impressed with the way this runs and looks on PS4 and I usually only play PC games these days.

I really do think the game is a shit ton of fun and a totally immersive experience.

By the way, I was playing using a SSD, the initial loading time (zooming into the galaxy) was super fast. Damn stuttering was fucking things up though, I had to leave so I'll be testing with RTSS and Nvidia's 30fps refresh rate soon.

If things keep up like this I'll go back to my PS4 save and wait for patches.

Stutters on my GSYNC monitor too. CPU doesn't hit 100% when it does it either.

First and second planet are running about as good as I expected using an oc'd 2500K + 970, stuttering when stuff gets generated or too much is happening, a few random drops but running around I get mostly 60fps. Won't jinx it, could get worse but so far my performance seems far beyond of what others are experiencing. Will try some of the tips to improve it further.

So can someone summarize this for me. It seems like the issues are mostly, but not entirely, related to the fact that the UI is strange for changing settings with a mouse and the fact that you have to restart the game after making changes. Also that using Nvidia or AMD settings is advantageous.

Those things aside the game runs decently? Or is it still bad?

My setup:
1440p monitor
R9 290 4GB
16 GB Ram
i5 3570k @ 4.1

They've sold millions and, as they keep pointing out, they're a small team. But if they're going to price their game like a 'AAA' gaming company, they need to start acting like a 'AAA' gaming company.

just played 20-30 mins,

Have a very nice Home planet, playing maxed out at 1440p, no vsync/ Borderless

GTX 1080,
4690k,
16gb
SSD

Seem to get stutters when leaving/entering ship and sometimes drops when out and about but nothing lower than 50 fps so far. for the most part it runs at 60fps. Definitely not "great" and i feel the IQ could be better.

As i say i've only played 20-30 mins so its not a great test but i've seen enough to not ask for a refund as Ill put some faith in the team to fix these issues.

Damn my impulse buying and thank God for Steam refunds. I just jumped on this, 3770k @ 4.1Ghz/16GB/980ti. Will report back with performance, really, really hoping I'm not too let down.

I'll keep an eye out for your report!

Realistically, I have impulses as well so there's a good chance I buy this game anyway. I guess you kinda have to be impulsive when you buy $700 video cards tho

is it ok to post a thread for people that just cant play the game at all?

I am having the game lock up on me so I have to physically reboot the computer

I know there are a bunch of NMS threads already though, so not sure protocol. I've never experienced a game that locks up my PC every time like this.

i5 4670k @ 4.0ghz
GTX 770 2GB
8GB RAM

Got it running at 1080p 60fps now, but it took a bit of work that's for sure.

Borderless window, vsync off, "max" framerate cap selected, forced vsync on and triple buffering through nvidia inspector.

No AA, AF x8, everything else on low.

I tried high settings at first but my GPU was maxing out and I was getting ~40fps, tried medium and was getting ~50, low got me to 60.

Haven't had too many stuttering issues but I haven't played that much yet though, just got off my starting planet.

They definitely just made a metric fuckton from sales, time to add new people. They can't support a game of this "size" without it. Simple. I wasn't saying they should have done it during development while they were in debt and just trying to get the game out, but now that it's out they need additional staff. They can't be a 10-man team forever and try to make games like NMS; if they want to keep it at 10 people, they need FAR less ambitious projects that are not full-retail $60 titles.

i5 6600k
Titan XP
3440x1440 21:9

Running max settings, 4x SSAA, ingame V sync off, control panel v sync off, g sync on

Game is pretty smooth for the most part, and stays around 90FPS.

V sync on made my game run like shit.

Game doesn't look particularly hot though, IQ is quite blurry.

Which AAA game company though?

Lol yeah. AAA companies; not exactly the model you want for the most part

They've sold millions now, but that money wasn't there several years ago when throwing an arbitrary amount of resources at development would have been relevant.

Gaming contracts are crazy complex. They likely got a fee upfront for development from Sony, with Sony covering marketing expenses, then a payment for shipping (this week!). It will take a while for them to get the millions from sales. Sean sold his house to fund development, you know. Even if they hired 50 people today (how you'd hire 50 game devs in the UK I don't know....) it would take 'em a good while to, you know, train them, rewrite engine etc.

i7@6700/1070/16GB, running on 3440x1440 maxxed out except for AA and V sync. I certainly feel stutter and sometimes FPS drop at 40fps for no reason. Also even the start menu looks low-res...

Still lots of stutter and frame drops (down to 30 fps) even with the recommended settings.

I can't play like it, and I'm someone who can bear a game which does 45-55fps.

I'm going to wait until things settle up.
