Of the two renowned composers who've worked with Squaresoft in years long past, whose music do you prefer more?

Nobuo Uematsu, most known for his work in the Final Fantasy series.

Or

Yasunori Mitsuda, the man who did the Xenogears, Chrono Trigger, and Chrono Cross scores?

This is like asking blonde or brunette. Sweeney or De Armas. Ketchup or Catsup.

Don't have a favorite but I've voted Mitsuda, even if just because Chrono Trigger is easily top 3 videogame music.

Btw, Uematsu has done the music for the recetly released Fantasy Life i. Some great tracks in that game.

Yasunori Mitsuda

Nobuo Uematsu easy, he did FFVII/VIII & X if I'm not mistaken and that alone...like damn.

Aye, it's a tough question for me, too.

With Mitsuda, the trio compositions of CT, CC, and Xenogears feels nearly impossible to beat ..

But then I think of Final Fantasies VI, VII, And VIII and I'm like;

Plies Plies tough question indeed lol.

It's not just the music, but being able to make such memorable and good stuff out of MIDI sounds sure is something else.

Orrrr Motoi Sakuraba

Love them both and it was great to see Mitsuda do the Xenoblade 2 and 3 soundtracks, Hopefully he'll be back for Xeno4!!!

Saying that though I think overall I like Uematsu a little more but this is a hard one to choose.

Yoko Shimomura and it's not even close. She is responsible for so many iconic soundtracks and songs it's not even funny. Street Fighter 2, Kingdom Hearts, Live a Live, Super Mario RPG, even FFXV. The game may have been somewhat forgettable but the soundtrack? Incredible. Yoko Shimomura has an incredible talent to create memorable melodies. Yasunori Mitsuda has done incredible work, but no where near the sheer volume of hit after hit that Shimomura has.

How dare you make me choose, Plies Plies

It has to be Uematsu because of the sheer size of his body of work. Mitsuda created perhapts the greatest OST of all time with Chrono Trigger, but Nobuo has nearly done the same, several times over.

To me, being consistantly great counts more than being great once or twice. Here is my personal list of best VG composers:
  • Nobuo Uematsu
  • Koji Kondo
  • Yoko Shimomura
  • Yasunori Mitsuda
  • Shoji Meguro

Mitsuda, i listen to His music more than Uematsu.

Especially chrono cross and some of chrono trigger.

Even my best music i ever listened is still Schala Theme

Tough decision. Mitsuda hits higher highs, but his body of work is much smaller than Uematsu. I want to go Mitsuda. Even accounting for the difference in quantity, he's still consistent, unlike your Meguros or Sakurabas whose lows can be oh so mediocre.

Neither is my all-time favorite. Praise be, our departed king Unisuga.

Mitsuda because the chrono trigger soundtrack is the greatest videogame soundtrack in the history of videogame soundtracks. And chrono trigger has the greatest opening as well as opening music to any videogame in history. End of damn story.

It should be Uematsu for the quality and breadth of his work, because it's all really good, but I like the Chrono Trigger soundtrack too much to not give it to Mitsuda. CT is that good.

I always liked this arranged version:

Both are genius but if there is only one king, then it's Uematsu clearly.

If there was to be a successor to him, some are talking about Okabe which is right, but the work of Go Shiina on Tales of Zestiria and Tales of Legendia is truly amazing. It's sad that he was never used as a main Tales composer instead of Sakuraba.

Okabe should have at least one Final Fantasy under his belt. Yasunori Nishiki as well. Hell let them both loose on FF 17.

Edit: And Keiichi Okabe is one of the few composers that work with Square who could touch Kingdom Hearts. I know Yoko is getting up there in age, but Takeharu Ishimoto is not the right co-composer; he sucks.

They're both great... but here's the catch: while quantity isn't quality (since both possess this), Uematsu does have a more elaborate catalogue to choose from I think. If Mitsuda had more works under his belt, perhaps there would be more to look into.
