Non Smokers: How do you look at smokers?

I hope the people who are so appologetic towards smokers and think it's cool and sexy also feel that way about fat people.

We had a big discussion about smoking one night not long ago and the consensus was that smoking is dying out among educated middle and upper class people and is something that will one day only been found amond the poor and lower classes and of course kids trying to be cool and look older. I don't know anybody who smokes and the former smokers that I know are the ones who are the most vocal againts smoking because they have first hand knowledge on how stupid a habit it is.
i only feel like that towards fat people that dont whine and dont pity themselves about it..
i never met a smoker who cries for pity.

This made me start smoking:

1) Old people don't get off the hook. It's been known that tobacco smoking is unhealthy since the stuff was first brought to europe. We just have the science behind why it's unhealthy now.

2) The whole point of addiction is that you do things that you know are wrong or unhealthy.

3) I don't believe many people start smoking with the intention of it becoming a lifelong habit. It's poor decision making. Should everyone be punished for their poor decisions?

1) A small group babbling about them possibly not being good for you, with the entire general population d oing it saying they're "keen", and tons of proof and in your face evidence that they kill you, is different.

2) Um, no. One can be addicted to exercise, or water, or sex. None of these are bad, in moderation at the least. Smoking is bad for you, period.

3) Um, they're told it's addictive, and it kills you. Being too cokcy and saying "Oh, I can start and quit when I want", without knowing what you're getting in to, is stupid. What else should people be punished for? Choosing NOT to smoke?

There are many smokers who cry for pity because they are addicted to cigs. For many smokers that's their reason for still smoking, it's so hard to quit, I just can't do it, whine whine, cry cry. Lights one up.

...the majority of non-smokers in this thread, that is.

Indeed, this thread is only reaffirming the GAF stereotype as being populated by a bunch of spoiled, sheltered kids.

"I never got addicted to smoking, so everyone who did are weak and filthy."
"I never had any mental problems so anyone who has just needs to snap out of it."
"I never got addicted to alcohol or drugs, so anyone who has just aren't tough enough to say no."
"I never had to file for bankruptcy so everyone who did are sloppy and careless."
"I never got caught drunk driving even though I did it a dozen times, so everyone who has are subhuman criminals who should be shot."

etc.

Thats a great point, but you forgot one step, they talk about how they want to quit, bitch and moan, cry for pity, REMOVE OXYGEN MASK, then light one up

I smoke from time to time (twice per week, if I do smoke at all).

And I vote Republican.

Hate me.

I didn't think anyone really had any strong feelings on smoking outside of the medical community and the state of California. Do people really believe everything they are told? Particularly this comment, "kissing a smoker is like kissing an ashtray." That's not a valid comparison.

I just don't see how smoking effects the average non-smoker to illicit such a strong reaction in people. I could understand if a relative died of lung cancer or if people were complaining about health insurance premiums (although cigarettes are already heavily taxed as it is) but no one in this thread has stated either as the reason they dislike smoking. I don't know any smoker who is completely inconsiderate of the people around them (second-hand smoke) and the only people who smell like smoke are people who frequent bars/clubs (non-smokers and smokers alike). With all the restrictions on smoking already in place, I don't see why the average non-smoker should even care.

Religions have been out negatively concerning smoking for hundreds of years. And there was evidence it was bad for you, namely the coughing dying people. You REALLY think we didn't know smoking was unhealthy until 20-30 years ago? You think lung cancer is a recent invention?

2) Um, no. One can be addicted to exercise, or water, or sex. None of these are bad, in moderation at the least. Smoking is bad for you, period.

Point taken, but the healthy activities you describe, when taken to an addiction-like level, would be unhealthy from a mental or social point of view.

3) Um, they're told it's addictive, and it kills you. Being too cokcy and saying "Oh, I can start and quit when I want", without knowing what you're getting in to, is stupid. What else should people be punished for? Choosing NOT to smoke?

My point still stands on this. Should everyone be punished for the poor decisions they make?

All of those can be bad lifestyles when you get addicted to them. I don't see how being addicted to any of those can't be bad. Being addicted to exercising can lead to steroid abuse, too much straining of one's body, and other physical damage. Too much sex can obviously lead to STDs (if unchecked) and potentially a damage to one's relationship with the other. And believe it or not, there actually is a thing as water addiction which I remember hearing about on NPR a while ago. It's not like drinking 3 liters of water a day but, rather, several gallons which can create chemical imbalances in your body.

To add to this (and my own post above), there's also a difference between addiction and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Ooh, nice. I've wanted to buy them, but haven't had the money when I've had the opportunity to buy them. I usually buy Romeo y Julieta nro 2s. I've found that they have a very nice quality/price ratio (but still I only buy them tax free from cruises).

Nice, I got a couple of those in my humidor. If you like the Romeo y Juliete, check out the La Aroma de Cuba. Great cigar, about the same price.

Thanks, I'll try to remember those the next time I'm buying cigars.

I wish I was amazed at the attitude many are taking against smokers of late. All things considered, it is a negligible issue and a silly thing overwhich to seperate people. I would say that this thread shows that my smoking filters out of the judgemental types who may otherwise end up in my life, however, I've never had my smoking damage a relationship. It no doubt keeps some people from approaching me but I'm none the wiser when it happens and have never had a shortage of non-smoking friends who would prefer no one smoked but overlook the matter since it is such a small matter relative to a good friendship.

In the end, I am to my non-smoking friends what my religious friends are to me: be considerate of our respective lifestyles and how they differ, and everything will go perfectly.

I don't understand people that don't understand smoking. Why do people get drunk? Why do people have sex? Why do people do anything that has any potential health risk whatsoever? Because it feels good-- it's not rocket science.

That said, I was a light smoker for about 4-5 months, then I quit cold turkey. Smoking is a gross habit, but it IS relaxing, and the buzz you get from a cigarette is nice for the first few months. If smoking carried no health risks would I do it? You bet your sweet ass I would. No better way to end a long day than a good smoke.

Well, while I think smoking is terrible for your body, I also believe that it is YOUR body and you can do whatever the hell you want to it as long as you don't hurt anyone else. Now, there is second-hand smoking... but geez, what are you gonna do.

I light up whenever I'm in an outdoor queue, it's fun to see nonsmokers express their disgust in the form of passive aggressive coughing.

I've never touched a cigarette in my life

I can tolerate cigarette smoke pretty well since my mom smoked at home all the time when I lived there. I don't have a problem with smokers themselves, but I sure as hell don't think smoking is smart.

Since I moved out of my parents' house and into a place where no one smokes inside, I can really notice a difference when I go into a house where people smoke inside. Everything smells like shit. Before, I couldn't smell it at all because I was around it all day. It was like being able to smell for the first time.

I also get annoyed if I go out and get the smell of cigarette on my clothes so that I have to wash then right when I get home. I don't like the smell of smoke on my clothes at all.

Okay, step back, I'm the one guy that should be posting in this thread.

My three best friends, the friends I've been hanging out with since highschool are habitual smokers. I mean, a pack every 2-days smokers. Even a pack a day depending on their moods, which I always thought was meant for wrinkly old 70 year old widows on their porches.

It all started back in high school, as something we could try out together as 17 year olds. Since then, we're 22 and the 3 of them have made it apart of their lifestyles.

Sure, back then going into a bar/walking through parks and sharing a pack together was very fun to do, but now they've totally become habitual smokers.

If I go out with them, I can plan on a few things happening when I get home:

1.) I have to take a shower or else I'll stink up my room and bed.

2.) I have to febreeze my clothes and stick them in a hamper outside of my room.

3.) As the water dribbles down my face, the smell comes off my hair like a sponge.

4.) Why is it that my hands always smell as if I smoked a million packs?

Here are even MORE annoyances having 3 best friends that smoke:

5.) Sitting in the back seat behind them while they smoke with the window down. Occasional ashes fly into my face.

6.) While talking in a cafe, smoke in the eyes while they exhale and talk.

7.) While we're walking, we get into a conversation and suddenly the conversation stops. I've walked into a building and have to wait for them to finish outside.

The WINTER and smoking:

8.) How about having to stay outside in the cold while waiting for cigarettes? Or being in a huge rush and having to wait for cigarettes?

Holy shit, cigarettes may be deadly, but I'm almost more pissed off at these annoyances.
------------------------

So here's something I've never had the guts to tell them. At the risk of coming off a dick:

Does anybody know the number 1 cause of death in America? Usually something to do with your heart---which smokers never really think about. It's not just about their lungs; their hearts are getting weaker.

Now, I'm not saying outlaw smoking. I just wish my friends had a larger perspective on their habit. They're essentially gambling their life away. Funny how social smoking the way they did as 17 year olds was alot more mature and safer than the way are at 22.

As someone here posted earlier, they feel that as people approach 30, they see the effects of smoking straightup. Hopefully it won't be too late for my friends. A classmate of mine had a friend die of testicular cancer. He was 20. Even though he was a non-smoker, why would you ever want to even chance cancer. Death is real--but only when you're not a suburban white kid in their early 20's not knowing of one person that has died at a premature age. That's my take on it.

Okay done.

Have you guys ever tried those fruit flavored cigars?

Naasssty.

Those are for pussies.

If you're going to have a flavored cigar, it's got to be a Drew Estate brand, like Acid or Java (have not tried the Solo Cafe), or Havana Honeys. End of story. Real men don't smoke anything else (that's flavored, that is).

Yeah-- second-hand smoke is a genuine concern. When I smoked, if there were people nearby I'd move away, especially if it was a little kid. I was at least considerate about it. I also understand people not liking smoke in general. It just seems like many people in this thread are less concerned with the second-hand health risks and more interested in pushing their stupid biases.

I usually see people who smoke, drink, or dip, as a person with a crutch. They need those for some reason, and I do not. I see it as a character flaw and sign of weakness, but since I am not perfect I let it alone.

I too have my weaknesses, but Pizza and Mr. Pibb doesn't have the same stigma.

You're gonna feel stupid dying from nothing. :lol

I smoke ciggies on and off. Usually when I try to quite smoking weed. I went through two packs the last two weeks, but now I'm back on the patch...uh...weed patch that is. Fuck tobacco, the herb hits better. :D Non-smokers need to get down or lay down. PEACE.

Smokers are nasty. They smell. They have ugly, unhealthy lungs. They have yellow teeth.

I can't stand being near smokers, or people who are smoking. The smell totally disgusts me.

I wouldn't date a chick who smoked under any circumstances. Even if she was uber hot and Brazilian, no no.

1) No smokers
2) No fatties
3) No Ohio State fans

i think its time you lowered your standards.

Crutch is the best word for it, I think. I didn't really understand the meaning of the term until I quit drinking and smoking myself. Although like you said I don't look down on others for not being able to quit (or not wanting to), as there are plenty of other bad habits I can't break.

Smokers and smoking in general really disgust me. I think if they want to kill themselves that bad just shoot yourself in the head or hang yourself or something.

It should be banned everywhere. If there wasnt secondhand smoke and it only affected the smokers i wouldnt care, but it effects everyone that is in the same room as the smoker, which is wrong.

The best part is almost all smokers are the ones that dropped out of high school and are uneducated. They believe its "their right" to smoke, but cant seem to realize it affects everyone around. I guess they dont hear about that during nascar races or monday night raw

Yo man, beggars can't be choosers.

I really don't care about smokers, although a majority of the ones I know do seem to share the same type of bothersome personality traits: Aggressive, confrontational, uncompromising, [sometimes] just plain ignorant about what ever they're talking about, etc. I don't know if the smoking makes the person or the person makes the smoker, but these traits are very common amongst the smokers I know. Who knows, there's probably some passive, compromising smokers out there, I just haven't met them yet.

I'd be agressive, confrontational and uncompromising too if I had to put up with you self-righteous pricks in real life.

damn right!! smokers-walkers are so annoying!!! I think there should be a law saying smokers can't smoke and walk at the same time. They must stand in corners designated for smokers if they want to smoke

I would like to slice their throats open and expedite the whole process of them dying, sans the pollution and side effects.

Smoking is a god damned filthy habit.

And pot smells just as bad.

Snipe a smoker! ^_^

Willco said:

I'm not self-righteous, I've got no problem with people smoking. It's their choice to make, so let'em make it. I've been around smokers all my life, so the 2nd hand smoking doesn't bother me. I was just listing off characteristics I've noticed through out the years that were too common to not notice. There's always an exception, it's just that I haven't seen it yet, that's all. Smoke where ever you can all you want, it's your choice.

I should add that I find female smokers to be somewhat of a turn-off. Smoking disqualifies any female from being relationship material. It's the smell I can't stand; stale smoke on clothes, hair, and breath is pretty unpleasant. Health-wise, I suppose it's a shame some otherwise lovely individual would do that to her body, but as I said before it's a personal choice, possibly an act of rebellion, or what-have-you. If it weren't for the fact that cigarette smoke contaminates everything it touches with that nasty odour, I don't think I'd care as much.

Edit: Oh, stale pot smoke is kinda rank, too, but it's less problematic than cigarette smoke. For the most part, it airs out completely with moderate outdoor exposure, whereas cig smoke doesn't completely disappear until the clothes go in the wash.

I actually find the image of an attractive girl smoking to be pretty hot. However the actual effects of smoking (smell sticking to clothes, taste in their mouth, yellow teeth) is pretty disgusting if you're in a relationship with them.

achilles said:

I used to hate them-- now it's the closest I can get to having a cigarette without smoking again :lol

Thread needs more Bill Hicks:

"Non-smokers die every day. Sleep tight!

See, I know you've employed some kind of eternal life fantasy because you've chosen not to smoke; let me be the first to pop that fucking bubble and send you hurtling back to reality – because you're dead too. And you know what doctors say: 'Shit, if only you'd smoked, we'd have the technology to help you. It's you people dying from nothing who are screwed.'"

"Tell you, the worst kind of non-smokers' the kind where you're smokin' and they just walk up to you ... [starts coughing affectedly] I always say, 'Shit, you're lucky you don't smoke. That's some cough you got there, dude. I'm smoking, you're coughing. Wow.' That's kind of cruel, man. Going up to a smoker and coughing. Shit! Do you go up to crippled people dancing too, you fucks? 'Hey, Mr. Wheelchair. What's your problem? Come on ironside, race ya!'"

"I smoke. If this bothers anyone, I recommend you look around the world in which we live ... and shut your fucking mouth!"

I smoke on extreme rare occasions, and it's always when I'm drinking.

White Man said:
Oh, I love the bias against smokers. Eat your propaganda up good, kiddies.

It's not propaganda that smokers smell bad. It's fact. Only the most consciensious smokers avoid the rank breath and stinky clothes.

I always said that I wasn't gonna be an asshole non-smoker when I quit, and I don't think I am. I never complain aroundsmokers and it doesn't really bother me to go to a bar where people smoke.

But smokers still smell like shit. That sour, tar-breath is the worst -- especially if they drink coffee.

I regret smoking if only for the fact that I stunk in front of so many other people.

If I'm walking down a street and a person going the opposite way the first thing that always pops in my head is "Poor bastard".

I wouldn't call it pity, but I do feel sad.
