Christ, this looks like it might be the tipping point...

I'm really not looking forward to the news of war. Thought and prayers to all our friends in south korea

okay if they are firing again they should have picked a new target to fire at a mostly deserted island is silly when they could have had a first strike on a fresh target

at least this may keep things from going all out SK and US will just shrug it off as nothing while a fresh target would force action

we will have to wait and see

Those on Yeonpyeong being allowed to leave shelters.

Good news?

I would hope, but I'm getting creepy vibes that something awful is going to happen..

I want to be wrong.

I have been following this thread briefly over the past few days and haven't looked at it in a while. What have I missed in the last day or two? Is it getting worse or better?

Why would they lift an evacuation order unless they were more than sure it'd be fine?

Sometimes it gets better and sometimes it gets worse. Kind of like the last 60 years in that part of the world.

It cooled off for a few days, but the US/South Korea are proceeding with the military exercises that had North Korea all pissed off to start with.

North Korea deploys surface-to-air missiles on its coast as U.S. and South Korea prep for navy drills, Yonhap reports.
Here I was thinking this would blow over. So...anyone up for a Korean War 21st Century Edition? Fuck Yeah!

The scary part for me is that NK is continuing to attack, their first attack sent the message they were presumably trying the send. There is no need for them to continue their attack unless they're trying to start something.

I dunno. That would have been a smart move as it really wouldn't be an escalation and since there would be no risk of loss of life. Attacking a fresh target would be a clear escalation - especially since they'd have to hit something known to be populated and not in a "contested" area.

Well, didn't Yonhap also report there being explosions? Followed by an evacuation? Did they confuse the explosions for something else?

Ok, well at least it hasn't completely gone to hell.

Errr their message was clearly ignored, which was to get the joint exercises canceled. Of course they'll do something else, they even warned right after the first strike that there would more strikes if the exercise was not called off. The exercise is taking place as we speak. So yeah, it's likely that they will do another strike.

Edit: NK basically did some artillery strikes on its own side of the border, so people in Yeonpyeong were told to go in the bunkers after the sound of artillery was heard. They were then allowed to come out when it was clear that the artillery strikes were happening in NK territory. A ferry will depart for Incheon and people will be allowed to leave on that. This was probably a warning by NK or preliminary strikes before more strikes on SK's territory.

So there is reports of artillery sounds.... but no impacts reported. Just warning shots?

yeah I take it back, its a smart move if they just want to keep things level and not escalate things

well I think last night we got the same reports and it turned out NK was test firing on their own soil but close enough to the island to be heard

maybe they are going to try test firing all week

Yeah about 30 mins ago the SK army confirmed they heard sounds of artillery firing within DPRK borders...

But there's no indication of SK impact, and the SK army just lifted the evacuation.

I'm thinking its just warning shots and SK is not worried. (I hope)

There's no indication of yet that North Korea has fired at South Korea or the US. Those are likely just warning shots for now.

That is a lot like CNN to focus on some punk kid with a fake bomb than a grown man who runs a country with nuclear bombs.

North Korea readies missiles as U.S., South Korea begin drill

SEOUL (Reuters) – North Korea has placed surface-to-surface missiles on launch pads in the Yellow Sea, Yonhap news agency reported on Sunday, as the United States and South Korea began joint military exercises.
The agency said also that Pyongyang had moved surface-to-air missiles to frontline areas. The North's official KCNA news agency warned of retaliatory action if its territory was violated.
"We will deliver a brutal military blow on any provocation which violates our territorial waters," KCNA said

The question is: will they have the balls to follow through with their threat? They know very well the line they're toeing right now...

The saddest part is that the country could be prosperous but because they've spent every penny they have to try and appear to have big balls - they've squandered every opportunity they've had to become a more credible country. If they had any sense they'd realize that if they built a real economy they'd be able to have a more credible deterrent.

My god I would love it if the people revolted. It won't happen soon but it'd be awesome.

only to see them massacred by soldiers? unless the army is in, a rebellion isn't at all likely to succeed.

Pretty much 100% certain they will follow through with their threats if they don't get what they ask for.

There may come a time when the soldiers refuse to fire. That's how every revolution goes down.

Like I said "it won't happen soon".

Which absolutely sucks because the last thing we (North America, Europe, and Asia) need right now is another fucking war.

Alright military guys. NK fires and hits the US. What happens next?

America would be in one tight position. Retaliate and risk nuclear war. Do nothing and your citizens die while NK laughs.
