North Korea just shelled them some South Korea

The sad thing is that NK now HAS to do something about the SK/US military exercises now that they've threatened to. I don't think they are one to back down once we call their bluff.

What time do the exercises start?

sounds like they are trying to talk in circles and back peddle a bit

North Korea's state-run KCNA news service said the exercises in the Yellow Sea are "no more than an attempt to find a pretext for aggression and ignite a war at any cost" and said they "are putting the Korean Peninsula at a state of ultra-emergency."

oh man...

I'm tired of this shit. Let's just go to war already. It's like I get the feeling it's eventually going to happen, and the longer we wait, the worse it's going to be.

Start wars, lower taxes = Infinite Revenue

Yeah I would have put the smack down on NK already, SK also deserves a wake up call

so the US and SK will hold their exercises, and NK will launch some missiles over and near Japan. there will be some type of continued outrage from both parties, but both can save face with stasis at that point.

Telegraph: North Korea's undercover journalists reveal misery of life in dictatorship

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/wor...ts-reveal-misery-of-life-in-dictatorship.html

^ Video in the article. Heartbreaking talk with a 23 year old girl.

But extraordinary video images smuggled out of North Korea, combined with reports of graffiti and posters critical of the regime, indicate a growing willingness among a previously cowed public to speak out and demand change.

Such dissent would once have been unthinkable in the reclusive state, but now hunger and plummeting living standards are now triggering demands for freedom - something that no North Korean has ever experienced.

Evidence of the rising tide of discontent has been captured on film by a small group of "citizen journalists", who newsgather at great personal risk to themselves. They then carry the footage across the heavily guarded border into China.

Gaming out an eventual collapse of North Korea: American and South Korean officials have discussed the prospects for a unified Korea, should the North’s economic troubles and political transition lead the state to implode. The South Koreans even considered commercial inducements to China, according to the American ambassador to Seoul. She told Washington in February that South Korean officials believe that the right business deals would “help salve” China’s “concerns about living with a reunified Korea” that is in a “benign alliance” with the United States.

From some of the latest wikileaks stuff, thought it might want to be seen in here

In politically stalemated situations like this, it seems like whoever moves first and quickly consolidate their position could probably get away with it.

Diplomacy is usually five or six steps behind and by the time it catches up, whoever has occupied the most territory can use it as a bargaining chip.

They're kept too weak to do anything but subsist.

Their food-producing efforts have been doing gangbusters, so long as the kind of food you're interested is in "tree bark" or "dirt".

The reason I asked is because people constantly say that NK is starving as a fall back to anything, but because the government is so reclusive and information rarely leaves the country it is near impossible to know the state of food production within the borders without making what feels like an assumption. Even when it was happening before the government (typically) didn't say much about it and maintained everything was fine.

I would guess satellite imagery combined with weather data of the country is the best way to gauge whether or not they could be eating or not if there is lack of tangible reports.

No, we've got plenty of good solid information about that. 20 000 defectors have gone to South Korea and we get secret reports from people inside North Korea using illegal cell phones near the Chinese boarders.

You do understand that tens of thousand of people have fled the country over the border with China, right? They are invariably malnourished and report on widespread famine. North Koreans are on average much smaller than those from the South.

Even state television runs programs like "Let's East Two Meals a Day in Accordance With Socialist Lifestyle."

I know people in SK, NK, China, and the US are hard at work ensuring that this situation doesn't escalate into a hot war, but I keep asking myself what would need to occur for it to actually happen. The transition period when new leadership comes to power is always dangerous in autocratic states. Anything could happen really - a leadership coup, civil war, an orderly transition, militaristic blustering to consolidate power, government shutdown, etc.

I really don't know enough about North Korea to give an opinion on what will happen, anyone with more knowledge of NK's government want to hazard an informed guess as to how the leadership transition will play out?

Well I think what we're increasingly seeing reports of, and not just now but for the past ten years perhaps, is that while the people worshipped Kim Il-Sung as a god, and really believed in all the bullshit myth making the government put out, they have had a much harder time believing his son, who never fought in no revolution, or did anything except scheme, was suddenly the new god, the new natural supreme, dear leader. So a change happened there, and obedience out of worship was replaced with obedience out of fear, and snitching, and lack of options.

And with the new kid on the block every report seems to indicate the people have less and less understanding of why another spoiled son, this time younger and even less experienced, should take over, why they need to sing songs about how his coming is the Spring of the World and that rejoicing must be done. That Telegraph article.. people being this angry? Angry enough to not care about serious, fatal repercussions. It's always a good sign when a people get that angry.

If something happens that means NK breaks down and needs a new govt then:

If Obama is stupid:

Let S Korea take the North and stay on the border with China provoking tension and a new front in a new cold war (imagine if the Chinese were on the Mexican border)

What will probably happen:

A puppet government will be set up as a temporary solution

What should happen:

Build a government in parallel with the (what will become) 5 party talks and try and create a lasting government that will help regional stability and economic growth

Somebodies going to infiltrate and try and start a revolution before and serious wars happen, if history tells me anything.

That - or China will set in before it escalates to a full blown war, as to avoid having the U.S on its border, and make it a puppet state like Tibet.

Perhaps so.. and also, for the entire Jong Il era, the economy has been devastated. Until the 70s, the North actually had a better economy than the South! So Il Sung could justify all the hype.

Uh, if North goes down South is taking over. No question about it. China will raise a bit of a fuss but will quiet down after a while.

If North goes down and South reconquers the territory, they will create an economic chaos for themselves so great that the West/East Germany reunification is going to look like a walk in the park in comparison.

the new Wikileaks say SK does want to reunite Korea so I guess they don't mind

Of course they want. Thats always been the official line from South since the end of the korean war...A korean president who says otherwise would basically commit political suicide saying anything else. Anything else than a reunification is impossible ideologically and officially.

Now, that wikileaks document did not really say anything. It was like a request to discuss a possible reunification after a collapse of the North with whoever it was. These kinda things are often expressed....

I don't think anything else is going to happen. If the North was really interested in causing more shit at this point, I think they would have done it by now.

I don't get that comic at all. Especially that last panel. Who is that guy with the snowflake supposed to be and what's going on?

Its Switzerland, for some reason, known for their large media presence throughout the world.

I think the guy with the snowflake is a news reporter (from Denmark it looks like) and it's supposed to be making fun of the fact that the media seems more concerned with things other than the Korean situation. It probably would have been more effective if it were a Fox News guy talking about searching people at airports but I guess it's not an American comic.

What would be the south taking over? The north is a shithole, you don't want the refugees, heck China doesn't want the fucking refugees.

You don't want the north to fall, keep that shitfaced dictator propped up and as long as you have him under control, it will be ok. I really don't get the desire for reunification, it's the worst thing that can happen.

they'll soon suggest that the West was trying to bait them into doing something, but they'll not be baited! prasie The Great Leader for being so much smarter than the Western dogs.

Anyone have any updates on the situation? Finding information from the American media is proving to be quite difficult.

And a question: Be honest with me - is there a real chance that we might be a week or two away from entering a war with North Korea?
