Not Sure I Can Handle Social Media Anymore

I don't want to derail it with me praising Era because that would be inappropriate for here, but Era is nothing like Facebook where you actually know these people in real life and they may be your co workers or close friends. I learned way too much from my Facebook that i wished to be ignorant of. Learned that the hard way. :(

you said era is not toxic

i'm saying it's filled with sewer rat bastards

I empathize with the OP. If I didn't need it to maintain contact with friends and family who are not readily available, I would have quit Facebook altogether. There were two instances where something I posted was met with resistance from opposing parties.

The first was when I posted a political opinion on my status update. One of my 'friends' took offense to that and insisted how misinformed and wrong my opinion was with all the passion that an ideological zealot can muster. Thankfully our exchange didn't devolve into insults as I patiently did my best to argue why I held those positions, but no sooner did our conversation end he unfriended me. I've since learned from mutual acquaintances what an SJW tard he's become. Good riddance I say.

The second was when I joined a Witcher facebook group that recently enjoyed a flood of new members after the Netflix show premiered. Said new members happen to be mostly SJWs who've embraced the show since it features some diverse casting, and to them anyone who objects to it is a racist. Naturally I took offense to this, and pointed out that calling people racist is a pretty cheap way to end an argument and that maybe they should have taken the time to listen to opinions counter to theirs. Nope. They were having none of it, and just resorted to shitty GIFs and memes rather than acknowledge my argument. I quit immediately and never bothered to go back again.

So yeah, besides those two instances, nothing on facebook has bothered me so much. Though this Covid-19 crisis has exposed some of those on my 'friend' list as a bunch of whining hypocrites. I could put them on blast and tell to suck it up and that people elsewhere are having a tougher time than they are. But why antagonize them? I don't want to deal with that. It's one of the reasons why I've never had a Twitter account.

I’m with ya man. I had a Myspace once, and it was a little entertaining for a while, but then I realized it wasn’t for me. Never had a Facebook of my own, some made one for me I basically told them to fuck off. Never felt the need for an Instagram although I have to admit it seems like a worthy platform for many things; much better than Facebook

I love Youtube. Music, anything you want to learn, it’s a great website

I used to love GameFAQs and their boards and I still sort of do but I was banned like 8-10 different times. It’s PC to the max. I hated it for that. The mods seriously have a vendetta against anyone that isn’t mother goose. They had zero control, only care about power and don’t understand in the slightest the amendment that grants us freedom of speech. I used to get banned for joking around lightly over there. It was infuriating to be silenced over such trivial things, I wish I could meet all the mods over there at GameFAQs in a face to face and have a long conversation about their pitiful attempts at running a forum

What was your political opinion about man? Did that guy unfriend you even though you were cool with him at work or from school? It’s pretty rare to hear something like that, coming from a dude. Usually it’s the chicks who turn against someone or something on a whim

I setup a Facebook account for about 10 minutes a few years before it hit my country and I recognised immediately that it was going to be a nightmare so thankfully I dodged that bullet completely (I only wish it wasn't as popular as it was for so bloody long).

I used Twitter for searching and news for a couple of years but yeah, it has gone to absolute hell so I've completely stopped using it (it's not installed on my main devices and only an older phone just in case).

What's interesting to me is how real life friendships and activities started to blossom for me as I moved away from "socialising" online.

I grew up with tech (IRC ICQ etc. in the 90s) but I've relished finding cool people at work and just talking in person.

If the virus goes on too long I'll probably socialise through my xbox :)

Sometimes, you can find really great information from an extremely knowledgeable person on reddit. The other 9/10 times, you just get young normies who watch network sitcoms and upvote horribly unfunny puns all day long.

Let's just say that what I said is not a popular opinion to have here in the Philippines. You think social justice is something new to us? We've been dealing with shit like that in this country for more than 30 years.

Thankfully, there's been a lot of pushback against this kind of self righteousness in recent years. There's no clearer example of this than Rodrigo Duterte becoming our president.

Only social media i use anymore is Era and GAf. I stopped using my facebook because my feed was always filled with people spewing toxic trash and it wasn't worth my time or mental energy fighting with people when it's not going to change anything or make me feel any better.

I cut a good amount of friends, but i don't regret it.

Facebook is also very fake, kind of like instagram I guess just on a somewhat different level. Like every friend I had on facebook seemed to have the perfect family and life if you only paid attention to their facebook feed.

I always feel bad for people when I check out their instagram page. All those selfies and 'look how much fun I had' photos. Just why do you want to share that all the time?

Resetera not being toxic is a good joke though.

I am off social media for a long time already, no facebook, instagram, twitter and I don't miss it at all.
I am also minimizing internet usage, instead of spending all day mindlessly browsing I just learned to control my self and use it only when I need it.
Neogaf is the only place where I pop up while I am working on my computer to clear my head from work and thats it.

All social media is cancer.
I don't even watch yt comments because it's all cancerous.

Twitter makes me wish I had terminal stage 4 cancer.

I‘m not kidding.

I have to be on Twitter for my job right now, it’s the highest source of traffic my sites right now and those are my only source of income at the moment. And even then it’s pennies. So on top of not getting enough food to eat we’re facing the loss of our home if this quarantine goes into June. But in order to even get a little traffic to my sites to maybe get a gallon of milk, eggs, or a loaf of bread; I have to sit with a huge target on my face and withstand 24/7 harassment and death threats from anonymous shitheads hiding behind cartoon avatars. If I block any of them, then they just run to Reddit and the Reddit discord and continue it there. The stress and worry fro the quarantine combined with that bullshit is literally killing me, and I’m sure the dickwads are lining up to dance on my corpse.

I’ve been having to lock my main Twitter account just to avoid seeing this shit lately but that has a negative effect too.

GAF is the only place I can come to get away from all that.

Stay strong, OP. Reddit is the worst place on the Internet, followed by Twitter, then Facebook. Ignorant moms and rednecks are nothing compared to smarmy, know-it-all basement dwellers living only for the upvotes.

Twitter is the worst, definitely.
Twitter has to be carefully curated. And then it's fine.
Follow people who only talk about their interests and their work and hobbies.
Ruthlessly block or unfollow everyone who brings up topics you don't want to waste your headspace on (read: most politics).

That's a great idea. I think there may be something like that. I gotta research it.
uBlock origin, you can block portions of sites.
I have comments and video recommendations blocked on youtube most of the time. (unless I specifically want to see them)

Twitter is probably the worst invention in the history of mankind.

One day future generations will look back on the twitter archives and think WTF were these people doing.
I don’t know duder, speaking by analogy, I worked at a place last year where they listened to a radio station so bad that when they played Creed and Backstreet Boys, it made me happy.

The only thing I'm signed up for is Facebook, and the last time I logged in to that was when I changed my status to "married." And I didn't even do that until about a week after actually getting married, and only because my wife made a big deal about it. I just don't care about FB the only reason I still have it is because I use Messenger to group chat with some friends.

I really only use gaming sites/forums to chat online. One site I stopped using because it just got boring posting there though, so now I pretty much only use GAF.

I'm just hoping the coming recession puts a few of these social media outfits out of business. Can you imagine the utopia we'd have in a world without Twitter or Instagram? It would be glorious.

Went on to a subreddit on the at-home work I do.

I asked a simple, polite question about how I would file my taxes on the upcoming simplified tax form the IRS is going to release for people like me who make so little that usually don't file.

I got downvoted then had some dick who knew nothing about that simplified tax form start giving me shit for not filing my taxes and so on.

I'm just fucking tired of social media. I really don't think with my growing anxiety and all the crap happening in my personal life that I can take it anymore.

I even limited myself here in the past few days due to all manner of bad luck I've been having.

Twitter is done for and I have about 16 friends on Facebook.

The only platform I still give any shits about is Youtube and that's just because I only use it to watch walkthroughs and LPs.

I think it all goes down to what kind of use you have for these platforms.

My wife is sick of seeing idiots on instagram exercising in front of the camera and trying to one up one another and shit like that.

Whereas I use the same platform to discover musicians and post guitar covers that I play. My kind of use doesn't depress me one bit, but for her, she thought about deactivating it.

These are cool platforms if used in a good way, but unfortunately most people use them for stupid stuff.

You have a heart of gold, don't let them take it from you, dude...

The last week has put me into a bad mental state. The combined stress from the quarantine and 24/7 harassment and death threats has driven me into depression. It seems like Twitter isn't enforcing reports with employees not working due to the pandemic, so it's open season for harassment. I unlock my account for one minute and I'm immediately spammed with harassment and people who want me dead from kids who have Sony Spider-Man accounts, Black Widow accounts, or Snydercut accounts. Someone even made a "cringe" account dedicated to incite harassment towards me.

And I can't Tweet anything either, as if I do they'll reply to the Tweets with graphic porn or worse; making me delete whatever I tweeted because I don't want people seeing that in replies. And hiding replies isn't an option as that just causes a Streisand Effect to whatever was hidden. So I'm at a loss at what to do.

Phew, that must be hell.
I learned that I don't lean myself too much out of the internet window, if possible.

But even then, I had a shit experience in a forum, where everybody turned against me for saying my opinion on something.
Well, I don't cling too much to any internet platform, whether it being Facebook or all these forums I frequent. So if it turns bad, I will just avoid the place for a few months.

If you are making your income with this, though, it must be really horrible..
I feel with you..

Wish I could give you any good advice, but I don't really have any idea how that online site traffic shit works, mate... :/

I don't use it personally, but over the past couple years I have found that it's where I find the best comedians. Not like Hollywood Netflix Special comedians, but actual nobodies who are simply crushing it with wit, you will not find many right of center jokes on many platforms these days.

I can't read Twitter anymore because the algorithm they use for engagement surfaces tweets that are nonstop hostility and sniping. There's some valuable info and interesting takes but it's just not worth to me to wade into so I limit myself to following links posted on Twitter via Nuzzel. There's way too many pundits who rely on social media to be seen and the battle for attention seems to favor bad takes on whatever is in the news cycle. It doesn't help that Twitter is frequently showing tweets from people I don't even follow who have a lot of followers that they constantly virtue signal to because it's important we know they are on the right side of every topic.

Twitter, especially with fandom, is extremely tribal. There are different "stans" for everything. Last week there was speculation that Black Widow could be released on VOD. Because of that, the Black Widow stans issued a fatwa on me for reporting it because NATASHA DESERVES TO BE ON THE BIG SCREEN. Yesterday that idiot writer who tried to cancel South Park compared Rise of Skywalker to COVID-19 (before deleting the Tweet because Disney yelled at her) and I said it was stupid to compare ANY movie to a pandemic that's killing thousands of people right now, so that gave the Zack Snyder SnyderCut crowd and the Sony "Raimisexual" stans used that as an excuse to decide I need to die. So it's been non-stop for like the last week.

If I block anyone, that's considered "bullying" because these kids hiding behind an anonymous handle and cartoon avatar believe they're entitled to harass anyone they want without repercussion.

What I really really hate about all that social media bullshit, when you are creating stuff is, that you basically have to behave like the biggest CUCK around all the time.

Everybody can shit on you or your work, and you ALWAYS have to be polite, or you are the stupid arrogant asshole that everyone will boycott, send threats, etc.

It's all fine and dandy as long as you are one of those fuckers with their shitty anime avatars who can criticize without repercussion, but the moment you put yourself out there with your work, you are supposed to be rimming everyone or get flak or even worse.

(in my case, somebody told me what kind of music I have to use for the first level of the little indie game I am working on, and I told him to fuck off, and what kind of entitled dumbfuck he is who thinks he can override my artistical decisions. It suddenly felt like that whole forum where that happened turned against me, immediately.)

Oh it's worse than that. There's a big DC SnyderCut YouTuber who secretly runs a series of anonymous "cringe" harassment accounts just so he can drive people to suicide and not be held responsible for being a toxic piece of shit.

Maybe a simple "thanks for the feedback" and ignoring the comment would have went down a little smoother.
That's what I did at first. I made the mistake to explain to him friendly that it's my game though and my artistic decision and people simply have different tastes.
He went on to explain to me why the music is shit, and how I need to do it, since that's the way it has to be done in his opinion.

So have you asked for advice from other people working in that field how to manage that problem. I can't see everyone reporting that news being harassed like you are. Anyway, just block them or use that Twitter feature that does not allow replies to tweets if that's available yet.
