Junk food is bad for your body. You hear it all the time, right? Social media and bullshit fake news are the same thing, but for your head. You don't eat 10 pizzas and not expect to get sick - it is the same thing.

Era is no more toxic than GAF, it's just toxic in a different way.
In Era, the quality of posts on any given (objective) subject are significantly better because the moderators don't allow the community to interact with supremely fucking stupid individuals. Even usually flammable topics (console wars) are significantly more fruitful in Era, because discourse isn't bogged down by dumb shit. They are also pretty liberal, so it's a very safe place for official devs to publicly post without incident.
Downside is that the admins are self-righteous assholes who cull any dissenting opinions in very specific areas -- namely political and ideological areas, and this bleeds into other areas. And it's so strict that people who go along the grain can suggest ANYTHING they want as ethical truth, and the community is forced to treat it as fact.....or be aggressively banned.
In GAF, you're more or less free to post whatever opinion or content you want within reason, and people are actually free to speak their minds. Different ideologies are free to bang heads all they want. Downside is that the stupidity comes with full freedom of speech isn't culled at all, so discussions very easily get derailed. And specifically because of the split from ERA, GAF's population has evolved to be far more right-leaning than it was beforehand. Far-left idiots are self-righteous and overbearing, while far-right idiots are deliberately offensive and edgy.
So basically....On ERA, you have threads about people hating women, women's rights, and you're free to comment but they'll ban anyone who disagrees with them. On GAF, you have threads about AMD's female CEO where it's basically nothing but dismissive drive by posts about SJWs and glass ceilings and women-in-business jokes, and you're free to comment....and that's it.
TL;DR in Era, majority of the toxicity comes from the moderators. In Gaf, the majority comes from the posters.

I never really considered message boards as social media, for the reason that social media as a term really sprung up when referring to places where you had to friend or follow somebody to get their comments. Reddit, YouTube, and places like this are open to anyone being able to see and comment on pretty much anything, while Facebook and such are more closed off.

Twitter is good for news, so I’ll always have a use for it. I don’t use Facebook, I don’t use Snapchat, I don’t use instagram. I don’t care about other people’s lives or their pictures, I care about news.

I only use it for help on technical issues like with a game or computer, etc. I’ve made a few posts on the PlayStation subreddit asking for help with an issue I had with my PS4 and every single one of them always get massively downvoted. No idea why, but I assume it’s just idiot Sony fanboys who go around downvoting anyone who has a technical issue with one of their systems.

1 to follow like wario64 for game related deals or follow physical game stores like strictly limited games on for when limited games go on sale.
2 shitting on dumb assholes that spread bad and false information, or ones like super saiyan feminists and millenials. It's fun to fuck with those people.
Other than that social media has no value to me.

Numerous studies and research have showed definitively that social media is very bad for peoples’ mental health, and amazingly, surveys show that people even know it - but they’re addicted. Like a heroin addict that knows one day the junk is going to kill them.
I would argue that this covid-19 hysteria would not have happened pre-Twitter, and Pre-Facebook.
Social media is just bd, and when you factor into it that it is run by giant corporations, the privacy violations, the censorship, it ventures into evil IMO.

Way too much negativity. First thing I did was delete IG and FB from my phone. Yes I have access to them on my Mac but this way I literally check only once a day.Then I started removing subreddits that are a cesspool of annoying/asshole people (Instagram, CallofDuty). The only reason I have FB is because I used it as an easy sign up to different websites I use today. But best thing is I have the Messanger on my phone in case anyone texts me but actual FB and IG walls? I couldnt care less about it anymore. Especially during this pandemic, you can really see who has literally nothing going on in their life by posting every day some picture challenge, album cover 10 day challenge etc. Also, 95% are posting photos from the past lol. Slowly but surely Im moving away from social media as Ive proved to myself I dont need it nor did it ever or will ever help me land something important like a job. If I want a job there are way more professional web portals that are specifically for that.

The less time spent online, the better for people struggling with depression, anxiety etc. It’s a bitter, negative and hostile place outside of very small, niche communities. Even things like mental health forums or threads I think are harmful as few have actual professionals posting and it cannot be healthy for someone struggling to see a bunch of other people posting about how much their life sucks and they want to die etc.
Most online communities are really only for happy people with thick skin who have their shit together and don’t get affected by what strangers post online (or idiot friends/family on social media). Even then it’s at best a time waster as nothing useful or productive comes out of it. I have time to waste regularly, hence I still engage some. However, it’s way less than in my younger days when I wasn’t in such a good place in life.

I use Facebook/Messenger to stay in touch with family and close friends. I even uploaded a new photo of myself for the first time in a while and it feels good because I'm normally pretty shy. I think social media is fine as long as you self-moderate and ignore the BS, toxic blowhards, negativity etc. Remember to stay positive and you will be fine.

Today I got into it with a guy on a Facebook group that I've never had any issues with and everyone is friendly with one another. And yet it's another person, while who I've never seen, seems to share many of the same political views I do.
Edit: turns out the guy on FB does not share the same views and is a Jo Jorgensen libertarian who got mad when I called the rioters Marxists and terrorists.
In fact a couple weeks ago I even posted how much I appreciate everyone being so friendly.
I admit I am just very sensitive at this point and I'm on edge due to my financial situation, my dad's health and other things.
My Twitter has been deactivated for a few weeks and I'm considering quitting all social, including here, but then there's the problem of isolation. There's still plenty of people here and elsewhere I like. So I really do not know what to do.

I quit all social media years ago. It had an insanely positive effect on my emotional state. Nowadays I just try to be disciplined around how much time I spent on GAF. I also frequent other discussion forums with topics of interest, but I mostly lurk.
