About one more month for SA2B to become the first million selling 3rd party GC game in a single territory. HotD III and SOAL are dying down as Sonic Mega Collection across all three platforms see great sales (even the GC version, with about 5,000 or so less than the PS2 one). In the top ten, SMB 2 and SADX pushed NBA 2K3 from #8 to #10. Unless something happens and Sega manages to publish another hit, it looks like this may be the top 10 (games, not the order of them) for a long time, even for the rest of the gen.

You'd think Sega would give the majority of their support to the GC by these numbers

Games
PlayStation 2: 33 | 38.82%
Xbox: 28 | 32.94%
Gamecube: 24 | 28.24%
Total: 85

Sales
PlayStation 2: 5,048,199 | 40.54%
Gamecube: 4,627,852 | 37.16%
Xbox: 2,776,632 | 22.30%
Total: 12,452,683

Average
Gamecube: 192,827
PlayStation 2: 152,976
Xbox: 102,838
Total: 146,502

Nintendo got 9 less titles, but almost equaled Sony's share of Sega sales.

Hmm.

I suppose that's made up for by all the Sega IPs on GBA though...

The Sonic Advance titles are pretty popular, but I don't know their sales, or how any of their other franchises are doing on the system.

This is the eye toy game right? pretty disapointing.
It looks like sega are the main 3rd party who have worked out how to sell NGC software, 6 titles over 400K would be better than most others i would think.

Yeah, and only two franchises, too.

PSO was kinda successful on the platform (sold over 500k WW, I think), but they should have brought it to the PS2.

Those Headhunter numbers are ouch. I am surprised at Otogi 2 as well. I new it would bomb but 11000 that is pretty low. Poor Sega.

Sorry to double post. I was just looking at the numbers again, Man did Astroboy tank hard!! 7500 sales. Yuji Naka is having a tough time of it.

I'd of picked this up, but there've been other games of higher priority. I'm dying to play the thing.

SEGA really should have shown the cube a little more love.

Astro Boy probably should've been a GameCube game anyway. Fits the demographic better, and Sonic Team has a pretty solid base on the console already. Then again, UGA touched the game so it was probably cursed anyway.

I said this in last month's thread, but Sega's been putting out bomb after bomb since basically March. They haven't had a hit since Sonic Heroes on the Gamecube and PS2. This month was the first since January that one of their published titles debuted over 30,000 copies sold in a month. A lot of their old stuff has been selling instead. Skies of Arcadia Legends sold about 50,000 copies this year, HotD III sold about 60,000-70,000 as well. These games probably should have been a discounted price in the first place, or advertised.

But hey, it's Sega.

Suckering 20,000 people into buying PSO 1 & 2 + seems to me like its a win for Sega. I'd never pay $30 for that even after I eventually quit playing it online.

In retrospect, it probably would've been good for Nintendo to try and court Sammy a little. Microsoft's pushed hard for their games, and it's resulting in a lot of help filling out the JP Xbox lineup as well as some nice western support and recommitted Sega support.

Call me crazy, but I think Gulty Gear or Dolphin Blue would've done decently on GC.

Take Two is the real publisher, they handled all maufacturing and distribution (which is essentially publishing). Sega used the same PR with Atlus, THQ, Atari & Acclaim to insinuate they played a larger role too (co-publishing).

Looks like we have a new "highest selling sega game this gen." Sorry, GameCube!

Sega developed. Not Sega published.

And if you're looking for Sega published AND developed this gen, look no further than Sonic Adventure. That was the one to beat.

You can dance around the issue all you want with saying that it was just a PR sham, but for all intents and purposes Sega is still credited as publishing it.

Well, the NPD doesn't track it under Sega. That's evidence enough.

Actually, no. Sega's only credited as developer (or owning the developer more accurately). Take Two handled manufacturing, distribution, advertising & pricing without Sega. That's usually what the publisher does.

What the NPD lists is actually the distribution brand of a game -- the GlobalStar label under Take-Two for this year's 2K sports line. Publishing involves more than this, specifically various matters of ownership, which classify the ESPN line as a co-published product of SEGA.

Well, Sega aquired the various licenses... but that's essentially the extent of their involvement. "Co-publisher" is just PR to show Sega still has faith in the brand and ease the eventual shift that going to happen as Take Two eats up Visual Concepts.

jarrod:

These were collaborative efforts between the two publishers. Other third-party publisher deals that SEGA had, like Shenmue II or Phantasy Star Online Eps.1&2 with Microsoft, were handled differently and do not classify as co-publishing, though.

Collaberative as in T2 had to convince Sega to go with budget pricing, then they shouldered all advertising/manufacturing/distribution costs and duties themselves. Sega used the same like with THQ, Atlus and Acclaim for various games.

Well, SA2:B actually grossed more since it was released at full price.

Speaking of Distribution, are Atari still releasing SEGA games in Australia? I've looked around recently, both SEGA Superstars and Worms Forts: Under Seige didn't seem to have any stickers indicating Atari distributing it. Just big SEGA logos.

Well , here is my 2 cents. I think Sega games only sell at discount prices. It seems that as long as the price is $ 20 dollars or less then the games sells. It is sad but true. All the games that are selling now are at budget prices with the exception of Sonic Heroes. I believe sonic sells becuase the name is out there in the popular media (like cartoons).

I do agree, Jarrod, BUT I still don't think it would sell now. You may ask why I have this opion? For 3 reasons: 1. the game early on got a bad reputation of being short and not great quality. 2. the cartoon flopped. If it was a hit lpke Dragoon ball z then Astro boy would have sold on either the PS2 or Gamecube. 3. at this point in the gamecube's life people don't seem to be buying alot of games. Heck, another game of questionable quality. Amazing island, hasn't sold either. Even a good game like Puyo Puyo fever seems to be ignored.

I think if Sega had released more games like Jet set radio future, shinobi, Panzeer Dragoon and even toe Jam and Earl early in the Gamecube life span, Sega would have had more games about to reach half a million or a million mark, but it is too late now.

yes you too are right. Alot of the old games sell becuase they are cheap. Plus it didn't help that Sega of America picked some wrong game. No american would pick up a game like Blood will tell. This Ip has no recognation to the average gaming public. The ip doesn't even have the nostalgia factor like outrun or any of Sega's older ips, so it not going to sell to the hardcore. Astro Boy is another game i scratch my head and wounder why they brought out here. I like Tenchu, but I can see the new Tenchu not selling for Sega. you would think that Sega would see that this game didn't sell for activision, but I guess Sega wants a stealth game. Yet Sega of America ignores Altered Beast, a game that might sell to Americans. I almost feel other companies should start to distributing sega's games or Sega should start selling all thier games at $20 when they release them.

You can't help but wonder what Sega would be achieving sales wise if they'd put a few more layers of polish on those damned Sonic games.

Yeah, really.

Fix the camera
Get rid of the voice acting
Get rid of unnecessary extra characters
Improve on the level design

Those are things I'd love to see in the next 3D Sonic. Despite my general disgust for the demo in Mario Kart: DD, I'll still pick up Heroes when it hits $20.

That Sega seems like they're doing so well on GameCube is sad more than anything, their PS2 versions have been bombing which says their mindshare is nearly non-existant with mainstream gamers now. They should stick with niche hardcore Xbox/GC gamers and give them with lots of extra features like Tecmo is doing.

jarrod:

All costs, including those for development surprisingly, are being shared between the two publishers. Distribution is handled through Take-Two's channels under the SEGA/Global Star label, and both Visual Concepts and Take-Two are contributing creative and monetary resources for marketing and advertising.

The act of publishing centers around negotiating with retailers on matters like orders, shipments, and revenues. In a true co-publishing deal, the commitment that the retailer receives comes from both publishers to ensure that the product is supported with timely shipments, advertising, customer care, and level of price protection if any (an agreement to refund the retailer some money in case the MSRP is dropped unexpectedly). Hypothetically, both publishers would be somewhat liable if issues arose.

Co-publishing is not just PR. In the case of standard third-party publisher deals like Phantasy Star Online Eps.1&2 or Shenmue II on Xbox in the US, Microsoft planned and handled most of the details for release themselves and mainly just had the product developed for them by SEGA. The release strategy of this year's ESPN line, though, resulted from SEGA having Visual Concepts seek a new sales plan and closely collaborating with Take-Two.
