I found Max Payne 2 pretty disappointing as well, honestly. The Mona romance felt so forced and it made me lose the one shred of respect for Max left that he was a guy set on vengenace. He became a husk of the player in Max Payne 2. Just going from mission to mission to go for it. Maybe that was their intention but it kills my interest in the story when it feels like there's no stakes. Also those bad Mona Sniper Missions.

But you could knock that hospital equipment over real good.

most disappointing is a big category this year dawg

Quantum Break
NMS
Homefront
Division
Mighty No 9
Mirror's edge
SFV
Star Fox
I'd add DS3 to the list. It was so... nothing? I can't even bring myself to replay it for the DLC.
Fucking Capcom, SFV should have been GOAT.

You should never have expected anything from Mighty No 9 or No Man's Sky

my expectations for NMS were about 100% lesser than GAFs and I was still let down big time. It's barely a video game

DS3 is a great game but everyone has Souls fatigue, I think... including myself

it's better than Bloodborne

I agree that nobody should have expected much from Mighty No 9. People turned a blind eye to the fact that Inafune was the guy who basically drove Capcom into the shitter before he left the company.

I actually like No Man's Sky for what it is. Mindless space exploration. It's good at that and if you expected anything else you expected too much.

The Division is the biggest disappointment for me. Shitty shooter with shitty MMO elements wrapped in what is probably a decent plot.

I loved Max Payne 3. Cutscenes only bothered me when replaying the game, and the gameplay was TIGHT. Best gunplay in any third person shooter. Goddammit Rockstar just give me MP3 gunplay in a GTA game.

Mafia 3 was a big disappointment for me as well. It's extra disappointing because it has a lot of good stuff going on in it but then they pull a Brutal Legend on you and show you what the real 'game' is after the first couple of hours.

Exactly.

SFV was way more disappointing. SFIV was kicking ass right until the day SFV was released. There was no reason to expect SFV wouldn't pick up right where IV left off. Instead... ugh.

I was surprised yet not surprised by SFV. I was surprised because SFIV, like you said, kicked ass so I just assumed SFV would follow suit (to a degree it did, mechanically the game is still pretty tight). But everything else about the game is incredibly rushed, and in that regard I'm not surprised because Capcom probably wanted to get a cash-cow game out there early because they aren't doing the best in terms of money

I never understood why people hyped No Mans Sky. They were literally hyping the game BASED ON FUCKING NOTHING. Unproven developer making ridiculous promises without actually showing anything of value or that looked fun.

Joe Danger was a good game for what it was, but expecting something good on the scale of what they were promising from that developer was stupid especially when they weren't show8ng fuck all.

I cant decide which hype was more stupid. No Mans Sky or Dead Island.

The hype for No Man's Sky was the idea of the randomly generated planets and the ability to explore strange new worlds. So to that extent I can see why there was hype around it because it seemed like something interesting. But god damn. It's so mediocre in every way. It's probably my Anti-GOTY

Doom 2016 is my GOTY because it's basically the Mad Max Fury Road of video games

Calling Bloodborne boring/trash while praising Waifu Fortress 2 just goes to show that your tastes in kideo games should be seriously questioned ;)

I'm actually shocked with how much fun I'm having with Pokemon Sun right now.

Actually *playing* Bloodborne was the boring part. The Game Grumps saved that game in my eyes.

I doubt i'll ever finish Doom. I think it's a very good shooter and it feels amazing, but it's just another wave shooter and i'm completely done with those

I just remember seeing NMS for the first time and thinking "that's fucking bullshit. you can't design a great game around randomly generated bullshit."

and as everyone got wet about the game, I maintained that position. and then when the game came out and it was broken and boring and lived up to none of the bullshit promises they made, I was unaffected.

I'd like to try out Doom when I have some time, though. Sounds really good from people I trust.

Anybody can come up with an idea of a cool video game. That doesn't mean you hype it to the moon when an unproven developer tells you an idea for a video game without showing anything interesting. People who had expectations feom No Mans Sky have themselves to blame. Just like the people who hyped Dead Island based on nothing but a CG trailer.

Egoraptor is so bad at it though.

#SHOOT - I highly question Egoraptors opinions on Ocarina of Time after seeing him play the game and realizing he simply sucks at the game

He was actually doing pretty well in BB, but his main character's build was a lot different from when he was playing with Dan.

Also, I agree with a few points in that OoT Sequelitis, primarily the "there is so much...goddamned...WAITING" point. Because that's a silver-barreled shoot right there.

I like to believe Dead Island is what killed the mainstream zombie craze in video games.

Ocarina of Time does have a lot of waiting. But I dunno, a lot of his points ring hollow for me. Which is shocking since his Mega Man X Sequelitis was so fucking spot on.

Has anyone had a chance to play or see the campaign for Call of Duty Infinite Warfare yet? I heard it was short (5 hours) but haven't heard if it was good.

BONUS SHOOT - Game Grumps is way better without JonTron (though, honestly, that might not be a very controversial opinion)

I've heard the same. I'll probably try the campaign over the long weekend.

Here's a shoot: Space is fucking boring, uncivilized alien planets are fucking boring.

You're more of a Star Trek guy than a Star Wars guy, aren't you?

But Star Trek is cool.

Star Trek is more civilized alien planets, though

Huh, that's funny cos OneyNG another Youtube animator type who runs in that circle was a brief friend of mine when I was a kid.

I initially thought so too, but then I replayed OoT (specifically, the 3DS version a couple months ago) and a lot of his points began to make crystal clear sense. Don't get me wrong, a lot of his points were exaggerated, but he isn't off the mark.

Space stations are cool as shit. Star Trek has lots of those. Even abandoned civilized planets are cool but 'let's check out these fucking rock formations' sucks. The insides of space ships are cool. Like in Alien. You know what's not cool? Sitting in the god damn cockpit the entire time.

On that note - one thing I miss about 70s, 80s and early 90s sci-fi movies is that those movies did a really good job of making their worlds feel lived in and used. I love everything about the world building in Alien and Aliens

Alien!

I'm excited to get into dishonored this week

I'm close to finishing it on low chaos and it's definitely good. Better powers, level design, etc. Plot isn't so hot, but the world building is top notch.

While we're talking games, my top 2016 10 probably looking something like this.

Overwatch
DOOM
XCOM 2
Star Fox Zero
Dishonored 2
Tokyo Mirage Sessions
Pocket Card Jockey
Inside
Fire Emblem Fates Conquest
Paper Mario

I'm expecting Last Guardian to rank somewhere and give Paper Mario the boot. It actually ended up being a pretty great year besides a few stinkers (Uncharted, Federation Force)
