Episode I > Episode II?

I remember when Episode II came out everyone said it was flawed, but a lot better than Episode I. No way. Now that time has passed and we have the good trilogy (minus the nu-version edits) on shelves, can we all agree that Episode II is the worst film in the series?

I don't know about that, but I do know that Star Wars (original) > Spiderman 1 + 2

You can't compare three films to two. Spider-Man 1 + 2 > ANH & ROTJ.

I thought that the first time I saw it. Episode II was just awful.

It was quite funny seeing the entire audience burst out laughing when Yoda started doing all those flips and stuff though. Good stuff.

Episode I may be "better" but it's too damn slow...

Attack of the Clones IMAX > Episode I > Episode II.

Trimmed some fat, the frolicking scene, and was a shorter and more fun film.

I've long thought episode 1 was better then episode 2. Sure 2 had much better effects and all that but the dialog in it was just so awful. The story bits felt too rushed to make way for more mindless action. The only really bad thing about episode 1 was jar jar and jake lloyd aside from that it was fine.

Nope. I have seen all the Star Wars movies on dvd since the release and I just saw both Spidermans on dvd a few weeks ago so I can compare of all them and as great as Spiderman 2 was (Spidey 1 was only good, not great), it just doesn't compare to any of the original trilogy.

Ehh, can't really agree. They both had their fair share of cringe-worthy moments, but Episode 2 had the grander scale in action, and more connections/similarities to the old movies.

Bad love story and a bit slow at points, but has its really smashing points. New (and old) revelations and information add spice to the rest of the series.

The Phantom Edit is quite more watchable.

Phantom Menace absolutely kicked the shit out of Episode 2, but still both fantastic movies imo. Can't wait to see how they are going to cap off the PT.

Pod race was pretty good ^^

Lucas made the pod race like 10 hours long for the dvd for some unknown reason. I enjoyed Episode 1 more overall, but they don't really deserve to have the Star Wars name. The stories in the newer movies are just horrible, did Lucas really write the original Star Wars movies?

They're both equally bad, fast forward to the good parts, films. The only time I watched them fully was on theaters and ever since the respective DVDs came out, I just skip to the saber/blaster fights. I can't stomach all the bad dialogue, and the robotic performances from the human characters.

The original trilogy had some pretty shitty dialogue at times, but in the prequels it's constant crap, like Lucas used a dialogue generator to come up with it, then mix in stale and almost boring performances from everybody aside from Obi Wan and Palpatine, and you get 2 shitty movies leeching off of whatever nostalgic memories people had about the original great Trilogy.

Oh and as much as I love Sam Raimi, Empire Strikes Back alone flushes both Spidey flicks down the shitter.

i say when i first saw phantom menace i was confused. All the light sabre fights have no emotion and they're 100x faster paced than the OT. But the clips on the ot dvd set of episode 3 really portray a lot of emotion while keeping the fast pacing. That will be a sight to behold.

Really though, most complaints can be derived from the fact that episode 1 and 2 have a lot larger scope than the OT, and the fact there isn't a han solo type wise-ass.

The scope doesn't bother me, the story is genuinely shitty. It doesn't have any of the urgency of the originals. You are right on about not having a Solo, every movie could use a little more Harrison Ford in it.

Yes, but he also had Lawrance Kasdan to help, who is missing in both Episode 1 & 2, so maybe that explains the difference in the quality of both the original trilogy and the prequels.

AOTC is average if you subtract the ackward love scenes, but PM is almost all garbage. The pod scene and final light saber battle are nice, but that's it. The pacing, dialog, acting, and especially the plot are terrible.

Edit: ESB>ANH>ROTJ>AOTC>>>TPM

the story is fine. by saying the PT has a shit story means the OT has a shit story. OT was built on the basis of the aftermatch of the clone wars. Though the adding of a couple characters like count dooku was a bit un-necessary... the stories were fine.

Well maybe besides making the force seem a little less mystical with the medychlorians and all.

Or people always expect to be absolutely blown away like they were when they were kids, when it's pretty hard to be when you've been drowned in Star Wars for the last 25 years.

Well it is a matter of opinion, but the OT is so much more dramatic and meaningful. OT is based on the aftermath of the clone wars, but so far the aftermath is infinitely more entertaining then the actual event.

AOTC is one of the worst films I've ever seen. People say that Jar Jar ruined Episode 1, but they don't say anything about Hayden Christensen. He and Lucas's awkward camera angles and zoom-in choices make the film nearly unwatchable.

As bad as the dialogue is in AOTC, it's WORSE in TPM.

Multiple "Yipees," "No need to report that until we have something to report," the midi-chlorian explanations, "I don't care what galaxy you're from, that's gotta hurt," "Yousa in big doo-doo dis time," and all of Jar-Jar's lines "Whena youssa thinking weesa being in trouble?!" Add to that the Portman "high talk" and you got something that's pretty crap.

Humor-wise, I thought Clones had some sparse humorous throwaways, mainly coming from Obi-Wan. I still chuckle when he realizes that he just kicked Jango off the side, and realize he's still attached to him, and his overly sarcastic "Good job!" after Anakin explains what he tried to do.

Clones is a decent SW movie. I think it gets too much flack because after TPM, it almost seemed like people wanted to find reasons to dislike and nit-pick. Yeah, the love-story kinda bit the big one, but it has quite a bit that's good in it, and love him or hate him, Hayden at least is showing some emotion even if it is whiny-angsty-bitchiness.

And truth be told, IMO the worst delivery in a SW movie is still that fucker in ESB that says "two fighters against a Star Destroyer?" :)

The worst delivery is obviously: "But I wanted to go to the Tashi Station to pick up some power converters."

Same goes for you to.

ESB >> ANH > ROTJ >>> TPM = AOTC

Both prequels are equal, but different, in their mediocrity.

What i mean by scope is that the universe is much more fleshed out in episode 1 and 2, and it concentrates on more things going on at one time because of that. In the OT it was mainly small rebel force vs empire but mainly concentrating on luke/leia/han/etc. Which in case leaves less time for character building. You also know the main gist of the story when watching the PT, so maybe you don't need really care about the characters since you know what happens. There isn't much mystery into what happens next as you already know. Like this guy will die, this guy will live, this guy becomes evil, etc.

the pt is also much more "light" and friendlier sans Episode 3 instead of dark and gritty OT.

Anyways... down with the hate!

50 Reasons why Return of the Jedi sucks.

Jedi is the worst.

1. EWOKS, EWOKS, EWOKS: One of the miracles of the Star Wars trilogy is that Lucas's bizarre and ever present fascination with little people didn't hurt the first two films. The Jawas were cool. But George had to push his luck. The Ewoks are not cool. Period. In circles of die-hard Star Wars fans, to say you hate the Ewoks is like saying you enjoy breathing air. The Ewoks are the primary example of many of the points on this list: their unapologetic cuddliness is uncharacteristic and unwelcome; they look fake; they engage in constant physical comedy; their teddy bear design is wholly uninteresting; they live in boring surroundings; several of the film's dumbest scenes revolve around them; they were originally supposed to have been Wookies; and they sing that damn song at the end (well, at least until the Special Edition). But aside from what we see on-screen, the Ewoks are miserable little creatures for a completely different reason: they are the single clearest example of Lucas's willingness to compromise the integrity of his trilogy in favor of merchandising dollars. How intensely were the Ewoks marketed? Consider this: Ewok is a household word, despite the fact that it's never once spoken in the film.

I don't think people hated Episode II because it's popular to hate Star Wars. I like how IAmTheFan says, "Yeah, it was good save for all the parts with romance and Anakin!"

... uh, that was like HALF THE FILM.

The other half wasn't precisely great, either. :p

Return of the Jedi is great. The ewoks get too much hate. I really like the scene where C3PO tells the Star Wars story with the added help of sound effects.

I have felt that TPM is better than AotC for a while, but didn't really talk about it since many felt the opposite way.

I don't know what it is about AotC, but the film gets worse with repeated viewings. It's like a big CG cartoon far too much.

Cons about Ep 2 Attack of the Clones (IMO):
1. Bad, unconvincing love story between Anakin and Amidala. You know, Jake Lloyd had better chemistry with her than Hayden does.
2. Overreliance on CG. CG C-3PO. That was a stupid sequence, unnecessary.
3. Many of the scenes really are embarassing to watch. Obi-wan and Anakin in the flying car chasing the assassin, pretty bad IMO.
Pros:
1. Anakin and his mom, actually all of Tattoine! Killing the sandpeople was great.
2. Yoda fights Dracula (erm, Christopher Lee). Great sequence we ALL waited years to see!
3. Plenty of action. Christopher Lee adds considerable weight IMO.

Cons about Ep1 The Phantom Menace (IMO):
1. Jar jar is a little bit annoying, but in no way does he ruin the film for me. Neither does a little boy saying Yippee a few times.
2. Darth Vader created C-3PO. Stupid idea.
3. Anakin at the end "accidentally" saves the day. It could've been done better than that.
Pros:
1. Every scene involving Obi-Wan, Qui Qon, and lightsabers is great!
2. Darth Maul! Excellent villain.
3. Pod racing.
4. Jake Lloyd > Hayden, sorry but true.

Eh, I'm tired of trying to think of proofs -- I like Ep 1 a little better than Ep2, and neither holds a candle to any of the OT.

Dude, that's an awesome idea. They even played off it very well in the Empire Strikes Back: Infinities comic (which is like the What If?/Elseworlds of Star Wars comics).

I never said I didn't like Anakin. I think he actually did a pretty good job with what he had to work with, but I can see how he would rub people the wrong way. And the love story on Naboo was maybe like 10-15 minutes TOPS.

I loved Obi sneaking around, and the Tatooine stuff. Yeah I wasn't thrilled with "the sand is rough" but it was only slightly worse then other crap, say like Spiderman's God-awful "when you look into her eyes" bit.

But I won't get started on that. :)

I bet not. What's so groundbreaking about them?* They're almost CG animated movies. Lucas might as well had gone all the way. :p

Never read the comics (nor have I actually ever heard of them) but here's why I think it's stupid: Okay, there are tons of 3PO units, right? Interpreter droids? I find it extremely coincidental, not that the droids were involved in the prequel action and had their memories erased, but that Anakin Skywalker had designed C-3P0 and that Obi-Wan or Vader never made the connection it's the same droid later on in the OT.

It just doesn't fit to me, it seems like an attempt at cleverly finding a reason for 3PO to be in the prequels at all.
