Now that next-gen is 16:9 shouldn't split-screen be vertical?

Looking through the RR6 manual it looks like split screen is horizontal only. Now really, with a 16:9 screen, horizontal split-screen just makes a REALLY skinny odd looking picture. It made sense last-gen for most games to force horizontal (though I loved the vertical modes of Virtua On) since games were 4:3 for the most part. But since developers are assuming most people will be playing on a 16:9 HDTV, shouldn't they be either forcing vertical split-screen or giving a choice?

I mean with vertical split-screen on a 16:9 tv, you're almost getting (well not really, but close) a 4:3 image which is very pleasing on the eyes and gives you a great view of the action. Basically vertical split-screen on a 16:9 kicks ass with two people. But horizontal kinda sucks.

Do you think companies will actually pick this up quickly and give a horizontal/vertical option, or do you think we're stuck with horizontal on most games forever?

P.S. If RR6 actually has a vertical split-screen mode and so does every other 2P X360 game...then ignore this post ^^;

I'd have to agree. I remember playing some 2-player Burnout 2 on my 16:9 HDTV back home...that had a vertical option, and it was sweet. Every game should have it.

Halo 2 has vertical split screen on 16:9 and it r0x. Wish more games were like this.

Vertical split > Horizontal split

PDZ does this, doesn't it?

I have no clue, but I'd like to know if it does :)

I checked the Call of Duty 2 and RR6 manuals and neither shows a horizontal/vertical option with just forced horizontal. PGR3 doesn't even list split-screen in the damn book though it says it does have split-screen. So I have no clue if you can go vertical on that.

Split screen gaming sucks in any form.

...

Those of us who've been gaming from before xbox-live learned how to have fun with the multi-sectored split-screen included in games.

Besides, as much as people love to praise online, talking to a friend over voice chat while playing Halo still doesn't live up to the awesomeness of screaming at your buddies while they sit next to you as you kick their ass.

I endorse this thread 100%

Yeah having your opponent in the same room without having to drop a several hundred on an extra tv, console, and game sucks ass.

Split screen gaming should DIE. I fucking dispise split screen gaming. multiplayer should be handled by System-Link, LAN or online.

I'm glad all your friends are rich, hardcore gamers.

Some of us have casual friends who don't or can't afford to own videogame systems. What's wrong with having a good time playing games with your social buddies who aren't gaming freaks?

Vertical split sucks.. I don't know why you'd want to play Halo2 with less peripheral vision.. i hated that they didn't include the option to play with the standard horizontal split screen on widescreen tvs.

Doesn't it work both ways in FPS games? I mean if someone is on a 2nd story and your on the 1st you can see them with vertical split but not horizontal.

Horizontal makes more sense, it's more natural, why do you think a 16.9 screen is better and feels more natural... i hope games will always leave the choice.

Let me end this debate, once and for all time.

16:9 TV? You better be playing with vertical split.

I have a widescreen television, but whenever a friend and I played split screen I always changed the game back to 4:3 and had the horizontal split. Why? Because you see more out to the sides, much like playing single player widescreen.

No, I hate split screen vertical, even when it's on a 16:9 TV; the problem is it's too narrow. I prefer to have a wide field of view, to help see players on the periphery.

I love to have the extra extra wide field of view when doing split screen on a widescreen TV... it helps to see players coming up from the sides.
