At what point does Sony walk away from the Vita to focus all of their resources towards the PS4 and mobile?
There is only one game this month that sold >100,000 on a single platform, hasn't happened in decades.
Best selling release? Call of Duty: Ghosts with only 330K.
The issue is that even if PS4 does well it can't make up for the 180 million consoles Microsoft and Nintendo sold last gen. We're heading for a gigantic market contraction unless something changes.

PsVita, Wii , and DS numbers must be very low.
With the numbers for everything else so low, I can't really see much more than 10K for Wii and PSV combined.Yup. Between 56-64k I would guess.
If it doesn't the Vita and the Wii sold amazingly well. So yes, pretty sure? Are we SURE it includes 3DS?
If a game like Tomb Raider sold 4-5 million on a combined userbase of 160 million consoles and underperformed expectations, what is the sequel going to sell on a combined userbase of 80 million with ever-increasing costs to model Lara's hair and eyebrows and finger nails? Sony might be fine, but the entire industry is going to contract and change - hopefully for the better.
They're 7-8 years old and are more expensive than any 7-8 year old consoles in history, especially in comparison to their successors ($200-300 vs. $400-500.)
As a comparison, at the launch of the 360 the original Xbox was four years old and $149 vs. the 360's $300-400 and at the launch of the PS3 the PS2 was six years old and $129 vs. the PS3's $500-600.
the wii isnt going to be 84k, 3ds is definitely in there
So given that the console market is contracting and game expenses are expanding... How is anyone going to make any money this gen?
Next Gen console sales would be passable if there was still an active base buying older consoles. This would create competition and people at least indicate a general interest in dedicated gaming machines as a whole. As it stands the current sales performance of both consoles is not enough to support a healthy gaming industry and there's no indication people have an interest in buying consoles in droves at all. The PS4 is doing ok, but not enough to prop up the entire US market. Why are we so concerned about the 7th gen consoles? They are absolutely ancient and (especially ps3) overpriced for the tech.
3DS less than 100k confirmed?
That's crazy
I wonder if we'll get $99 PS3s and/or 360s anytime soon. I have to imagine it'll happen if these sales keep up... Jesus.
no 3ds hw numbers yet?
You realize your 30-40% range accommodates a 5M WW number, right? 40% doesn't quite put it there (if you ignore february, at least), but 30% does.I'm guessing not. They were at what, 4.2 at new year? They did 270ish in the us, I doubt they did 600k WW. Isn't the us about 30-40% of WW usually? And that typically includes Japan.
The thing about the Wii is it let people into the market who would have have never been there in the first place if it weren't for the fad. Any "contraction" would really just be evidence of the market returning to normal.
I cannot believe people think the 360 and the PS3 are going to do another 25% of their current LTD's.... Like.... they are totally not gonna sell another 20+ million. That gen was long as hell, people are going to move on very quickly.
I think this puts the final nail in the coffin for the argument that PS3 or 360 might eventually outsell the Wii worldwide.

Around 84k for 3DS + WII + PSV? Am I reading well?
I agree... Sony can drop PS3 to $150 or even the magical $99... it is time.
2014-2015 PS3 lineup is not that bad.
Well, the truth is that the hardcore market isn't contracting at all. Software sales are still very high.
But publishers will plead poverty and then microtransaction us to death.

If that was true, the word collapse wouldn't do justice, I refuse to believe that.
Not nessecarily. There was no indication they were equal or even close, just that PS3+PS4>Other Platforms. It could be 1k more or 200k more off that data. I just find that they'd probably have included PSVita in there if it also beat the 3DS? I dunno. If it doesn't the Vita and the Wii sold amazingly well. So yes, pretty sure?

edit: less than 84k? now that is depressing. I know January is a slow month and all, but wow.

If this happens industry wide, its when I'll finally throw in the towel on this life long hobby of mine.

Hey Aquamarine, 3DS/Vita at post #2300?
Those new people in the market still bought games from big publishers. There's going to be a lot of jobs lost this gen.
If you like big-budget games, you should want them to make their sales targets, because those sales targets are what justify AAA development in the first place.
Easier said than done to cut hardware pricing. I don't think Sony has a real impetus to do so. PS4 is doing well, so just let PS3 burn out for awhile at current pricing. Heck, it's still outselling WiiU.
Out of curiosity, can anyone comment on how EU numbers compare? Are they equally timid, or is the EU increasing its lead over the US as a more revenue and sales friendly market?
Complete collapse. I'm shocked, can we get confirmation please?
