You may have been misreading the hype. The reason this particular month's sales were "hyped" is because many considered it the last chance for the XB1 and Wii-U to reasonably turn around their fortunes, not because the month's sales were supposed to be that stellar in and of themselves.
(That is, the XB1 had a sales burst due to the Dis-Kinection shenanginas, and Wii-U had Mario Kart 8, both of which caused spikes in sales that - if they were shown to hold - would have been the long-predicted and increasingly unlikely "comebacks" for the systems, in their respective manners: for the XB1 to have a chance at winning NA, and the Wii-U to have a chance to beating... uh, GameCube I think is as high as anyone's realistically positing, at this point.)
I mean, I'm sure people will continue to move the goalposts ad-infinitum for sermons at the Church of the Revival, but I would say most people considered this the last call for any sort of timely and relevant turn-around for either system. At this point most people have accepted that the numbers we're seeing aren't going to undergo a massive shift long-term due to one or two relatively minor events or releases.
