NPD Sales Results for March 2015 [Up1: Nintendo numbers, PS4 placing]

We don't have facts to say that last holiday the PS4 would have sold more units had the Xbox One remained at 500$, either.

The fact is(at least as reported) Battlefield: Hardline has more PS4 players than Xbox One during US prime time, even if Xbox One sold more.

So where are those players coming from? European players playing at 4 am? Australians playing mid-afternoon?

We don't know if the diff is 1k, only that XOne version sold more. People play around the world in US prime time too.

I was expecting something like

"Xbox One was the highest* selling console"
*Stacked one shelf higher than PS4, therefore highest selling

No need to put X1 on higher shelf, just put them side by side and it's done.*

*Horizontal placement. X1 is not designed to be put vertically.

He said that PS4 sales are determined by supply and not by demand.

There wasn't 600k consoles left (I supose) but this doen't matter because there isn't demand for buy 600k extras consoles.

Yes and he might be partially right IMO. If inventory was really low that means Sony supplied just really close to demand. You have to understand that companies do not want products on shelves since it costs money. If Sony had 1000k more consoles they wanted to sell they would probably also lower the price, bundles, etc to sell those consoles. However since the demand is huge all over the world they had no incentive to sell more in the US than other places. MS on the other hand have inventory all over and really need to get them sold and hence price cut and game bundles in their hottest market.

We know 3D world is above a million due to some PR months ago I believe.

NSMB should be the highest still because of the bundles right?

Doubt it anymore. NSMBU was at 1.6M when it was reported last June I believe (when Mario Kart 8 went over 1M). Considering the new bundles arrived in September, it's pretty likely NSMBU is below 1.9M (unless it actually sold a good bit after it was unbundled, which I kind of doubt).

It's very surprising, better than Mario Party 9 launch.

What were MP9's launch #s?

The PS4 is the best selling console and Bloodborne is the second best selling game (keep in mind it's an exclusive.) Today was a good day...for PS gamers. :D

I wouldn't include 2013 as part of any pattern simply because there were no non-holiday months for consoles launching that year. We basically agree as it is. How Xbox One performs for the holidays this year is going to ride on Halo 5, pricing, and bundling. Those to me are the months that could be up in the air even if PS4 goes down to $299 (Microsoft will match accordingly). Until then... I think PS4 wins every month. The other reason I use the word "pattern" is that this is the second consecutive year where Sony spreads their first party releases out throughout the year, and Microsoft either deliberately or inadvertently puts everything out at the end of the year. It is almost like there is no direct competition as far as publishing goes for most of the year.

Well, Xbox One selling more in the fall is exactly what I'm expecting.

I think it's just how I/we read the word "pattern" after only one true holiday for both (I used the 2013 as a means to disprove it). To be clear I doubt Sony goes down to $299 but if they do I don't think halo will do it. And if they do it won't be by as much as last year. I really feel like the PS4 is cementing itself as the console for this generation. I agree with all your other points though.

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
I don't get this argument. Have there been sources/articles that more people go digital on PS4? I see it said a lot but may have missed an article, so I'm genuinely curious.

Pretty proportional to install base differences.

Still in that 10-20% range of total sales are digital felm retail releases, broadly speaking

On a site note, are we at that point where we expect the ps4 to be the number selling console now?

We're at the point where its almost mathematically impossible in the long term.

If you mean on a month by month basis... well that too. Unless a big Xbone game drops + sales then its a foregone conclusion.

The thing about consoles is the more people that buy a console the more they get friends/family to buy them. A highest selling console usually compounds itself by word of mouth.

We've gotten some percentage numbers in previous NPD threads about PS4 digital software versus XB1 digital software. Higher PS4 numbers are usually attributed to an older install base more likely to have a credit card.

I'm thinking Bloodborne did around 400-500k retail, but its not gonna have legs.

I keep hearing this, but the Souls games have had legs, haven't they?

He said that PS4 sales are determined by supply and not by demand.

There wasn't 600k consoles left (I suppose) but this doesn't matter because there wasn't demand for buy 600k extras consoles.

Along with the PS4 selling more, the XB1 would have sold less, so they wouldn't need that many.

Also, if you don't have a lot of stationary inventory there's no need to have any cutthroat sale to compete. If they had the inventory sitting around to win, that means they would likely have been more aggressive selling it (sales/bundle/etc).

Mario Party beats my expectation by a mile. Same for the 100k increase for 3ds hardware yoy.

Type-0 sales was disappointing though.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
I thought you only had eyes for me.

I haven't been keeping track, but do these numbers suggest Nintendo can meet FY forecast for 3DS?

I haven't seen you in a while. I get desperate when you are not here... I'm sorry, forgive me shinra

It meets their revised 3DS forecasts, yes. woot!

This is the main thing. It's a port of a half decade old, non-numbered, portable Final Fantasy that is named in such a way as to make that obvious while selling at full price.

I'm surprised it even broke the top 10.

i don't think it was marketed well.

also, streaming is popular and i don't think any streamer even bothered with it, which again coupled with no marketing push meant little visibility. of course, gaming sites covered it but there are at least 30 million ps4+xbone out there.

I got Mario Party 10 day one, enjoyed (and stilldo), and still surprised that it made it so high in the charts.

I know the game sells well (and reviews don't mean much, since the games always receive average reviews), but considering the userbase, late in the month release and multiple SKUs; thought it would miss the top 10.

Wow an FF title debuting at number 10... it's really hard to argue the series is still relevant.

Also just DAYM at Sony's dominance. I expected at least one month they might lose with Microsoft's crazy pricing schemes but it seems nothing can stop them

With the rate the WiiU is going, I think it may outlive us all!...

...No wait, I got that backwards.

Ya, they are on track with their revised forecast, rather surprisingly. The N3DS really managed to make a decent and (for now) prolonged splash.

Relevant I think still it is, but not strong as it was before FF XIII come out.

Didn't know it was that low
Was NSMBU not bundled as heavily as it was in Japan? I don't remember

We're talking about a port of a PSP game though, and one that was never particularly well-loved outside of a small-ish cult of aficionados. Reviews were fairly divisive, too. I'm surprised it did as well as it did.
