NPD Sales Results for November 2014 [Up3: NPD Data Error, AC:U #5]

Hi Abdiel, could you enlightenment me as to what you meant by selling "fast" versus the truckload?

Was there a stocking differential or was it just something like the hare and the turtle?

Hello! Second post in this thread, I think I missed some other questions way back, but, eh...

As to your inquiry, our stores saw a *lot* of PS4 inventory. Our local Sony/PS rep was in my home store talking with management about shifting extra stock. We restocked the floor pallets/piles repeatedly.

The XB1s we had (the bundles anyway) were selling out very quickly... But that also has *some* to do with MS not really sending us aggressive inventory through the month. I think we saw 1-2 major shipments (which weren't small, mind you), but they weren't on the same level.

So the XB1 'velocity' was higher, they'd sell really fast from the aggressive thing, more people piling in at the urgency points, but the PS4s were just constantly selling at really, really solid numbers. Just chipping away at that sales lead with a relentless momentum.

AC Unity and the MCC issues really didn't help, either. A few of our stores were outright accepting *returns* of MCC because of the faulty launches. Normally, we don't accept any opened software returns except as an exchange for the same game. We were giving store credit in most cases, but, yeah. Some seriously upset Halo fans were seen. Bundling the PS4 with 2 games that received near universal acclaim and especially GTA V continuing to sell gangbusters...

Anyway, that's why I couldn't make a clear call for either system last month. Clear differences in the mindset approaching how to sell this month... If MS hadn't basically eviscerated their own bottom line, there wouldn't have been any contest.

I thought the PS4 would still win. I was wrong.

I see the thread is full of ridiculous doom and gloom. LOL, definitely an NPD thread.

Both companies sold well. I'm sure Microsoft is more than happy, as is Sony. No one is screwed or doomed. Good 'ol hyperbole.

Except for the people who want them on there system of choice.

If the wealth of great WiiU first party titles are strong enough to make people buy the system then what use are they? They and the system has failed.

Wii U is a great Nintendo system. So, I don't have any regrets buying it, and nobody else should either if they like Nintendo games. Embrace the love brosefs

Has anyone else verified CBoat's numbers? A gap that small one could attribute to rounding error.

Not yet. Aquamarine pretty much bailed when cboat leaked that, and didn't deny the numbers. But that could mean anything.

Cboat has a pretty good leak record, but I do want double verification on this before actually believing it to be a fact.

I'll be happy with the PS4 and Xbone sell well. And I'll catch flak for this but I'm glad the Wii U is bombing. Practically no deals and I have had resentment towards Nintendo for pushing PS360 grade hardware for current gen price. Sadly.. I don't think this will change in the future either.

lmao! literally everytime the Wii U underperforms with a new game, Nintendo fans start saying "______" will save the Wii U. its not going to be saved. Skyward Sword only sold around 3.5 million copies and that was on the Wii which had an install base of 100k+. Zelda U will be lucky to get close to 1.5 million units imo. the system is dead. as great as Zelda U looks, no way people buy a Wii U en mass unless the Wii U's price is dropped to $199 or lower. argue all you want about the value of the sytem but clearly its current MSRP is doing the system little favors, especially when retailers had PS4's and Xbox One's for around $300 during November.

Where have you been seeing that?
All I've been seeing is people saying it still has big releases left. I haven't seen delusional "X will save the Wii U" types of posts.

""Cumulative PS4 & Xbox One sales are now almost 80 percent higher than the combined total of PS3 and Xbox 360 sales after 13 months.."

Dang. And people say console gaming is dead.

Oh and lol, 240k from Wii u with its biggest game of the entire gen AND black Friday. Bomba

Remember $599 and that first 360 year was abysmal, there were almost no good games. Also it doesn't mention Wii which was the juggernaut early last gen while Wii U is (redacted)... So it isn't exactly a direct comparison to say the console market is growing. Of course this gen was long awaited where as most people were surprised how quickly MS launched the 360.

LOL no. If MarioKart 8 and Smash can't shift systems. Nothing will. No one is interesting in the WiiU or Nintendo's IP's.

We get it, you don't like Nintendo. However do some god damn research before posting your fanboy drivel - Nintendo's IP's are by far the best selling games of this generation.

Wii U and 3DS severe underperformance even relatively to mild expectations are the real interesting news here. It becomes harder and harder to see the light at the end of the tunnel for Nintendo with dedicated systems.

Also Amiibo sales are definitely on the low end of expectations.

Fair enough but Zelda isn't a system seller. Nothing will save the WiiU now.

I disagree with Zelda not being a system seller. Not that it will save the Wii U, but the franchise does sell consoles imo. The Wii launched with one and it worked very well as one of the best selling Zelda's ever. The 3DS started turning around when Ocarina 3D released. Zelda even traditionally releases during the holidays. It's Nintendo's biggest "core" gamer single player franchise. Or it is now that 3D Mario went multiplayer anyway.

At the very least not having a new Zelda for Wii U is a huge gap in the traditional Nintendo franchise lineup for their home consoles. I don't think it's ever taken this long before (3 years if it releases next year), so that's not exactly helping the cause so to speak.

Should we really be surprised that DA didn't chart? It was a tough month and I always thought that series wasn't too well known among the mainstream.

So the XB1 'velocity' was higher, they'd sell really fast from the aggressive thing, more people piling in at the urgency points, but the PS4s were just constantly selling at really, really solid numbers. Just chipping away at that sales lead with a relentless momentum.

Would be safe to say that PS4's sales momentum never declined from Sep/Oct to Nov, but rather it was XB1's sales momentum that picked up instead?

Overall:

Software:

1.) Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (360, XBO, PS4, PS3, PC)
2.) Grand Theft Auto V (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3)
3.) Super Smash Bros. (NWU, 3DS)
4.) Madden NFL 15 (360, XBO, PS4, PS3)
5.) Pokemon Alpha Sapphire (3DS)
6.) Far Cry 4 (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3, PC)
7.) Pokemon Omega Ruby (3DS)
8.) NBA 2K15 (PS4, 360, XBO, PS3, PC)
9.) Assassin's Creed: Unity (PS4, XBO, PC)
10.) Halo: The Master Chief Collection (XBO)

I really don't get it.

Smash bros. is thrown together and pokemon gets counted individually

Will be interesting to see if MS goes back 399$ for profit (maybe bundle gold) or if they continue to sacrifice profit for mind share.
