Well that makes some fucking sense, as opposed to MS's bullshit. If FO4 shipped 12 million, multiply by $60 and you get $720 million. I know that the math is not that "simple", but at least it makes sense in my math-challenged head!!

MS's PR has always been misleading at best and lying at worst. I think more so than any other companies' PR, MS's spin on things (XB and its other products) is one of the worst for a publicly traded company.

In regard to FO4 sales, congratulations to Bethesda!
 
Kinda bumped about Halo. I remember when SF2 came out people were fucking insane wanting that game. Now it's just the faithful.

Hell count me in. I wasn't there day 1 either for HALO5. Lots of people I know weren't.

I was expecting a well mannered, thoughtful and nuanced discussion of the sales numbers that are released....just kidding. I actually love these threads, I read them like I watch a serialized tv show. I love to read the passion, drama, anger and excitement they produce every single month but they don't really mean anything.

To be fair, how do they come out in the media and call Halo 5 a failure. They have to make it look good any way they can. I just think they could be less slimy about it. They didn't HAVE to prop it up as the best launch in Halo history, because the numbers show it wasn't even close, going by realistic industry numbers.

Well, I didn't say the sky was falling nor did I say consoles are dead or predict 400k+ sales (I didn't post in the NPD prediction thread either if you want to check that)... all I said was "I don't think its particularly good for either of them"

We'll see how it translates to November but I think there was certainly a case for this October being better than previous ones given the differences between a usual October and this one

Do NPD track consoles sales from virtual store? Those stores also sell downloadable codes that could be considered digital sales. If they don't track digital, I'm inclined to believe they don't track those either...

NPD is the best researchers we have but not tracking digital sales is a mistake in a world where digital sales are bigger YoY.
 
I feel Fallout is a good representation of the feast or famine type scenario we see at retail these days.

While niche games are having okay results, you're either really knocking it out of the park like a lot of Warner's games this year, or you're getting notably dampened as everyone goes for the mega hits instead.

Like I look at Fallout 4, Black Ops 3, and Battlefront, then look over to Tomb Raider and go "What on earth were they thinking with that launch date?"

It could have instead been the standout game in a mostly dead month in the Spring.
 
Just now seeing the numbers, I'm surprised Halo 5 made it to #1 considering the damaged Xbox brand from the awful launch plus the damaged Halo brand from Halo 4 and Halo MCC. Yeah, it's not as high a debut as Halo 3, but that shouldn't be surprising to anyone if you remember how the 360 was riding a wave of momentum on a lot of awesome releases 2006-2007 while the PS3 was not doing so hot. Something had to give with the roles reversed this time.

Personally, I haven't bought it yet despite all the positive impressions. I have two good friends that used to love Halo, we were there day-one for every Halo release, but we haven't bought this one yet. Probably soon, but it's not a priority like it used to be. I think MS needs a new IP, or they try to revive Perfect Dark again (no Rare this time, pls).

Yea the whole Tomb Raider deal just defies all reason and logic. It has also, in all likelihood, cost the title dearly in sales. Not to mention potential damage to the franchise on the delayed platforms.

Halo 5 bombed compared to past mainline titles in the series (sales are 1/3 of what Halo 3 did) and failed to sell hardware in a meaningful way.
The bundle price was really high though so they were really going for those hardcore fans to make money and well...not too many of them.
Assassin's Creed Syndicate is an other bomb compared to past mainline titles. This was expected although maybe not to this extent. Ubi dig their grave, they are paying for their sins with Unity, wild annualization leading to franchise fatigue but I might add that they did a bad job at marketing the game, because it's a really good title, similarly to Black Flag but in all their demos they made it look like an unambitious downgrade compared to Unity.
About Sony, they might be pleased that they have weathered through the Halo storm so nicely but they certainly aren't that they are down yoy in a price cut month. Sales are disappointing. We don't know how the PS4 would have sold in October without the price cut (200k?) but right now the question is if they have pushed their sales in November with the Star Wars and COD bundles or if the price cut was really ineffective and they needed something more aggressive. We won't find out this until November...which of course will be...interesting :D

They mean quiet a bit actually or NPD wouldn't exist and all the industry folks wouldn't pay for it.

It's a sign that a games quality doesn't matter as much as it's perception. Halo 5 is the best Halo game since 3, and may be the best MP Halo yet. More so, when you consider the free DLC it's going to offer.
 
Poor TR.

Though I'm sure it's th biggest launch of a TR game ever and the biggest exclusive this fall starring a character named Lara Croft so all will be well.

Yep 100% agree. The plethora of games releasing in the span of three to four months out of the year is just not a sustainable model. It literally dooms lower their releases to failure or at very best mediocrity. Publishers really need to start utilizing the entire colander for release schedules again.

Completely agree, and yea, sort of follows on from a similar discussion earlier in the thread. Hope publishers start spreading their major releases out better, which to be fair appears to be improving for 2016. Still don't know what SE/Microsoft were thinking with TR though.
 
14m, yeesh!

Antedotal evidence, but a friend just went out and purchased a Uncharted bundle for Fallout 4. I have a feeling the PS4 price cut didn't move that many purchases with a release like this and Star Wars Battlefront so close, on top of black Friday.

Sales dipped here and will increase over Nov due to the release scheduals.

They give there games more time in the spot light .
They could have try to bring out TR in june or aug .

The Splatoon + Smash bundle will definitely get some love. Mario Maker has been doing well too it seems. Man I wish they'd do a mega bundle with like the top 5-6 major first party ninty releases on it. Smash, Splat, SMM, 3D World, Yossy, and MK8. Make it like $349-$400. Bundle a couple Wiimotes. Holiday ads. Whews.

You say this like its a fact. Clearly the market doesn't agree right now. And it's certainly not for lack of advertising or brand recognition either.

I know some of the core fans think this way, but I really don't think that'll be reflective of the wider reception of it. Personally I think it'll have a fairly steep drop off in user base and active player numbers. There's so many aspects of its multiplayer that need work. Hell, some, (including me) are already looking to, or have already moved on to something new as a go to MP fix, and I didn't think that'd be the case, especially so soon.
 
Good grief at the Fallout numbers! Totally deserved mind. Strangely i imagine Sony being happier of the of the 2 "big boys".....Next month however is going to be.....well it going to be simply gobsmacking for a plethora of reasons! Novembers predictions thread will be a classic.

I think tomb raider is for casuals and for European market. And I think it will have legs.

Yep. I would really love to know what actually happened behind the scenes with RotTR. It just doesn't make any whatsoever sense to position that game so poorly.

WOM spreads. The WOM around release was focused primarily on the presence of Microtransactions and the lack of local coop. Neither of those sound particularly appealing to the average consumer.

Regardless their lack of experience with the multiplayer does not magically make your opinion of it into a fact. Some people think the lack of BTB alone makes it a sub par Halo MP experience others think the release of forge maps as a map pack update is incredibly disappointing. But clearly your opinion is the only one that matters because it's undeniably true right?

Just saw FO4 shipment news and that further solidifies the statement you are saying I guess.
 
So Halo 5 seems to have sold worryingly low for numbered integration but did decent revenue WW? Guess with decent attach rates for season pass, custom controllers, etc I can see the revenue but really that's worrying low for install base for the game even allowing for a second boost on Black Friday. XB1 shaved small amount from PS4 lead but damn that's not enough I'd say. Looks like Sony will be number one in US at this point even if only by a modest lead.

PS4 seemed to show little response to price drop which is odd but with so little data I guess it's not a bust yet until Novembef and December NPD in. Pretty annoying to have to wait to really judge the price drop but there you go. I see people noting that demand might be deferred to November with Battlefront, and Black Friday deals and of course no way to know what sales would have been in. Halo release month without the price drop. It might actually have prevented even softer sales with many choosing to invest in XB1 for Halo.

Fallout 4 predictably huge after Skyrim. Unless it has atrocious legs I'm guessing over 20 million easily.

Tomb Raiders going to get killed. Really feels like it now. We'll see if and when sales noted but I can't believe Fallout didn't just suck all the oxcegen out of the room. The timed deal and release date I think with hindsight is going to look like a very poor decision by SE.

I think the social network effect have something to do with this, people just flock into the trend of the week.

As data points for giant corporations trying to make as much profit as possible the numbers do mean a lot. As to their relevance in the console wars they don't mean very much.

They really should. When you look at WB's succcess, they launched those games at times where they had a whole window to themselves. Even going back to Mordor, they shipped that in September, before the Q4 schedule kicked into full swing.

You don't have to cram as many games as possible so as to have an arbitrary "holiday" lineup.

That is market reality for interest and sales for sure. I just play it and I feel it's better than Reach/Halo 4 in every way. That's why to me it's a shame.
