Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 reviews and benchmarks

I jus hope this doesn't incentives other manufacturers to hike up their prices as well...

There was already an interview where nvidia stated that founder cards are placed at a medium price point. I expect 3d party cards with good cooling and descent oc capability to to cost around 850-900€ (just my speculation).

So it's basically $900/EUR 790 all over Europe, even in my eastern corner of the EU and in the national currency http://www.pcgarage.ro/cauta/gtx+1080 . Excited to see them having it in stock on launch day.

So this means the 1070 will be around 520 EUR range for the Founder's Edition by a simple math process. (900/699)*450=580 USD ~= 520 EUR

Meh, my 980 ti does doom 4k/60 at the high preset. 1080 is only doing 52. Even with an OC I don't know if it would catch up. Actually I'm pretty surprised by that 52 fps, they are running a beast of a test system. My Xeon 1231v3 at 3.8Ghz is quite the performer apparently.

Edit: I don't know about that Doom result. Other sites show near 60fps for a 1080 at max settings.

EVGA played Doom at 4K and Nightmare settings at 60

£620 you say. Definitely will go with the 1070 if I go with anything at all now. Not expecting the non reference 1080s to be anywhere near my budget

What settings are the heavy hitters at that resolution?

Grass rendering distance mainly. Foliage density stuff, and the shadows everything casts. Despite the detail, wandering through a densely packed midday Novigrad is absolutely fine, but hitting up a dense forest with shadows casting everywhere can plummet the FPS to 30.

That's just the nature of open world games though, I feel. You're dealing with games that not only have to keep on top of streaming a phenomenal amount of data continuously, but can also swing widely between scene complexity and performance cost from one minute to the next.

What tweaks do you use? I'm very curious as I have the same exact system as you as my backup PC, I wouldn't mind having Witcher 3 on there.

Mainly those that increase shadow and grass rendering distance, quite considerably. They're not at all necessary, but I love them. I can post my CFG tweaks if you'd like.

I nabbed a i7 6700K recently and it's definitely made a positive impact on hitching.

of course VRAM will be higher in extreme resolutions on ultra settings but 12GB VRAM don't help much if the game runs at 20fps

Well yeah.... that 12GB is only attractive if you're running 2-3 cards together. There's no resolution that's playable that will also require > 6GB VRAM on a single card. Except maybe a few odd ones like Shadow of Mordor with the max texture quality setting. Or Doom with nightmare textures.

But in SLI, you can play at 4-5K and easily hit that 6GB VRAM wall.

I've always been a AMD guy, but I am considering the 1080. I have a 290X and want to go 1440P 144hz monitor, with Gsync/freesync. 1440P+ 144hz+ Gsync is crazy expensive though. Those prices have to drop.

This founders edition is a load of BS though. If AMD pulled this, they would never get away with it.

This is exactly the type of business practices people warned against if Nvidia kept pulling ahead and gaining market-share, creating a virtual monopoly. Guess this is what people wanted. It will only get worse from here if nobody supports AMD. I'll wait to see if Vega can top the 1080.

And people saying they "want AMD to be competitive" but never buying cards from them, that's selfish and will never work.

As someone with a 980ti I want to get a 1080, I can get almost what I paid for my 980ti back from it. Should I upgrade to what seems to be the bullshit founders edition, or wait for non reference cards?

If you have a 980ti, without being rude, you would be mad to not wait for the custom cooled cards. You aren't missing out on hardly any performance, as the reference 1080s won't lend themselves to much overclocking, so your 980ti will likely be close enough anyway.

£620?!

Are you fucking joking?!

Jesus H Christ!

Well, the official MSRP for FE 1080 is $825 here in Russia and they are likely to retail for well above $1000 for the first month or so so you can find solace in that I suppose.

This founders edition is a load of BS though. If AMD pulled this, they would never get away with it.

AMD (ATI) have pulled something like that quite successfully since Radeon X800 series with their "PE" editions.

At least their PE had higher clocks (small but higher) than normal XT Edition.

Yep, same here, almost 800 euros for the GTX 1080. Not worth it in my opinion. The Ti model should have a similar price and coming in 6-9 months... I dont think they'll sell the new Ti for 1000 euros, right? but maybe they will, prices are getting crazy.

If Vega bombs we will all pay 1000€ for a 1080ti.

I don't know if the launch 1080 is going to sell as well as some people think. Sure, it's a good boost to performance over the last generation, but the prices in some countries are just astronomical for a non-Ti card and it seems like anyone who doesn't have more money than sense will just wait for the non-FE cards that have better coolers and more power connectors that make them better for overclocking at what should be a lower price.

Why is showing as sold out for you guys? When I load the page (and it takes a while to load), the Pre-order button is still there.

For the record, it was $686.

So...these are all FE edition cards, being sold by different vendors. Is there an actual difference here or are EVGA/Asus/whoever just reselling the same box Nvidia has given them?

Nvidia doesn't make the cards, they're actually made to spec by those companies. There shouldn't be a difference really, except when it comes to warranty policies etc.

Ill wait in line at microcenter but only if there will be OC versions available on the 27th. I dont think there will be so If thats the case Ill wait.

Im waiting for broadwell E anyways to build this new PC.

In Sweden you can't pre-order the cards it seems like.

"Säljstart 27/5 kl 15.00, innan dess går det inte att lägga order på produkten"

"Sales begin 27/5 3 AM, before that you can't put a order on the product".

Dayyyuuuuuummm

I'm so excited for this to be available in Canada. I wonder what the price will be, has anyone heard? I'm preparing myself for the worst.

NCIX has the FE listed between $909.99 and $949.99. I'm thinking anything with a decent cooler will probably be at least 1K before taxes.

At least we are getting the steaming pile of crap version of the 1080 out of the way, maybe better custom cooled and OC variants that come out in 3-4 weeks will have more stock for the more sane of us?

Waiting for the 3rd party cards with proper cooling and clock rates for 100$ less.

This "Founder Edition" is the biggest rip-off i have seen for a loooong while.

Patience is gonna save prospective 10 series buyers a lot of money, I think.

Personally I'm waiting for a nice $400-450 EVGA GTX 1070 with some nifty-looking new-and-improved ACX 3.0 cooler.

(alternatively, AMD could release something better for the money that still beats out a 970 and I would be down to buy that, too).

It blows my mind that people in this thread are still buying the Founders Edition. I can understand it if it was solely the inflated price, but given they are paying extra for a hobbled card it is staggering.

different situations.

Im picking one up because I just got my Vive and my GPU is very underspec,(I also have a gsync monitor that I cant use because I have an AMD GPU) so Im not gonna wait a month plus to get better cooling solutions. I'd rather just get the 1080FE and then upgrade to a Ti next year.

I can understand it. We have absolutely no idea what is coming from the various partners, right?

If a so-called hobbled card is what Nvidia is offering at $100 more than MSRP, with a bunch of talk about premium cooling solutions (that may or may not be bullshit), there's really no guarantee that we'll see a stock-clocked card with better cooling for $599 or even $649 from someone else later down the road.

They may end up performing worse (being throttled more) or costing nearly the same as the Founder's Edition. We're just lacking in information right now.
