Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 reviews and benchmarks

Feelings, no.. I could give a shit. I know what I'm buying and money doesn't matter. I'm just laughing at your $300 trolling. Surely you can appreciate that.

Of course you might have taken advantage of a price mistake, but you know it's half price for that card.

Trolling? The guy I was telling that told me it was silly of me to buy a 980ti, I gave him the reason why it wasn't.

Price mistake or not, does it matter? I got the card for cheap, it was labeled $300 and the inventory price in their system was also $300, did you want me to tell them to charge me $270 more?, or even better, $500-$600 more, since electronics are stupidly expensive here.

Anyway, enjoy your 1080 man, I didn't want to come off like an asshole and I kinda did.

It came off as trolling b/c you were replying to other posts and ignoring questions about your loltastic price on the 980ti. Congrats on the super deal.

That's strange, my experience has been the complete opposite. Had a single 780 with a custom cooler (ACX) and I swear that thing was louder under load than my overclocked SLI'ed 970s with the reference Nvidia cooler.

Regarding the heat dissipation, third party coolers are the GPUs that exhaust the most heat inside the case. The reference design blows it all out through the back.

I had a 295 gtx that idled in the 80s. If i turned on the fan to 100% it would sound like a jet engine. After that card there was no way i'd go back to reference design.

So that first one is an aftermarket card? Is it better than the Founders Edition cards?

Sorry, I'm pretty clueless at this kind of thing

Yes, for the SC the PCB is the same as reference I believe. It will likely be better than the Founder's Edition in terms of thermals and noise but overclock ceiling might be the around the same due to power limit (one eight-pin connector).

FTW edition is non-reference and has additional power phases (dual 8-pins), so you'll see higher overclocks on that one.

Hmm, I won't be overclocking anyway

This is the first time I've ever been following a video card at release. It's actually been kind of fun. There's been a lot to learn. Basically in the past I've just set a budget and then tried to find the card with the best reviews. Now I'm learning what all the acronyms mean :D

So related to that, I saw some pictures on another site of the EVGA SC model, and in the comments everyone was making a big deal about this card only having one 8 pin connector for power. Can anyone explain what the problem with that is? Seems related to overclocking the card. Does overclocking require more power to be successful? Someone made a claim that the 1000 series was more power efficient, then people started fighting and one person was called a fucking moron and that was the end of that. I didn't find the discussion particularly enlightening.

Edit: and it looks like my question has been posed elsewhere in the thread, like right above this post so never mind :D

Is there any demanding app/benchmark that I can loop for loading up my old cards?

Try either 3DMark (It's available on steam, and has a free demo). The paid version allows you to loop the tests infinity. It also comes with (going by memory so I may be off) 6 or more different benchmark tests you can try that vary in intensity.

A free option that I've started using is MSI Kombuster, nowhere near as polished IMO but free is free and it has many different options and auto loops.

* Edit: Decided to leave links in case they are needed.

At stock, yes it will. But I don't know what impact overclocking will have on the consumption.

This is also a good answer. I would assume though based on the Reference designs 180 watts, that even with max possible attainable overclock that you should be fine with a 500w power supply. But this is also a good answer, and I don't want to discount it with mine above.

I wish I live in US lol, the pricing ;_;

980ti is still around (converted) USD650~750 new and cheapest used one I can find is about 550.. 1080 probably gonna costs more than 1k haha

I Know here in Aus the prices for the 1080 are ranging from $1,200 to $1,400 for the founder edition T_T

I'm building my first PC soon. I'm mainly video editing but I will be doing some gaming.
Is it worth it to go with this instead of a 980ti and upgrading to the 1080ti a year from now? I mainly want to know if this would significantly improve rendering times.

Canadian retailer has both the EVGA SC and FTW priced. SC is ~$675 USD and FTW is ~$710 USD. For reference the FE is ~$700 USD in Canada, so it sounds like the pricing is pretty much 1:1 with conversion.
Dat 599$ MSRP :^)
If FTW or a comparable card really is more expensive than a FE, I'll probably just see how the 1070 fares. € prices will be horrendous.

actually I have a more important question now will a EVGA GTX 1080 FTW need 2 8 pin connectors as it seems my power supply only has 1, its a AX1200. Would the 1080 be compatible with a AX1200

Think it was mentioned somewhere that the ACX3 SC is just a single 8 pin connector.

Why wouldn't you OC a GPU? Even a basic, +100 to the Core and a +200 to the memory with a slight voltage adjustment would net some pretty good results for a total of about 5 min of work.

I definitely don't mind OC on the core and memory (small one) but anything to do with changing the voltage leaves me way too intimidated and worried that I'll destroy my card lol.

its the below quote that threw me, if a 1080 needs 2 8 pins I dont have 2, and i'm not sure my AX1200 even has 2 8 pin ports so not sure getting a second wire would be suitable either. Do GFX cards come supplied with the needed pin connectors?.

Custom coolers and higher clock on the FTW and SC. FTW also has 2 x 8-pin connectors. FE is just the vanilla version.

AX1200 has 6x 6+2 PCIe plugs, your power supply is a premium overkill power supply to run 4 of these if you want. 6+2 is the 8 pin you're looking for.

I just got done with all 30 pages of that Guru3d article and it is such a poorly written pile of shit. He actually ends it with the GTX 1080 will "love you long time."

I hope Guru3d sells the Founder's Edition and buys a prostitute so he can finally lose his virginity.

US taxes are applied on top of what you see, same for service plans (don't want your 700 $ card to just die in four months). It's not as cheap as it looks.

Yeah, author comes off as a damn fool.

Newegg put preorders up already?

I went from GTX 580 to 980 Ti (I like to skip at least 1 gen) and now I'm so into this hype. I can't wait for 1180 Ti!

I don't play Division anymore but the jump from 57 FPS to 77 is ridiculous.

And I'll be playing Witcher series soon. NVidia has me. The 980 Ti probably resells decently I'd imagine if I were to upgrade.

My money is ready - But there's just no way a FE card is going to sneak past and into my box.. There is of course no indication for when the proper cards are coming yet, no?

we're already seeing the leaks, and apparently we'll see dates for them today. I would bet a couple of weeks away, maybe a month max.

Pretty sure that is just Herbert's sense of humor. Been doing it since like.... forever.

With leaks this early I bet a week, or less. They've had these cards for awhile. Now stock is a different story

yeah, I'm just worried Nvidia might have a sales embargo on them or something. Like, first few weeks have to be FEs only and on a certain date they can sell the custom ones.

but honestly with these things out in the wild already, it just makes the FEs seem like an even worse proposition. Don't know why anyone would buy a more expensive, vastly inferior card when these are so close.

I mean, I get the impulse buyer stuff since I am one, but this situation is too ridiculous even for me.

Yes.

Here's what you have

ZgieD8A.jpg

You just need one PCIe cable. This is how 8pin are mostly done, you just connect the 2 pin along side the 6 pin. it's all wired for 8pin and also fits the more common 6pin.

Yeah i saw those cables it looked like the 2 part had no 'insides' in one of them though (1 of the 2 in the 2 part), is that normal?

It starts getting a bit annoying. I start getting the feeling it will take a month at least until I get get my hands on one.

sorry if this has been asked 100 times already but does anybody know what time the UK pre order goes live... I am F5'ing a few sites and I have a pile of work to do!
