Not OP, but I went with FE because I'm slapping a waterblock on it anyways. Current EK blocks only fit reference PCBs, with no prediction thus far of when custom PCB blocks will land, so, best to be safe than sorry.
You can still downsample so waiting a couple of weeks and paying less money for a superior card seems like a no brainer.

It's on the specs sheet (both SC and FTW are the same size). For some reason it's wider than 980Ti

Just got an email back from Overclockers, the MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Gaming X card dimensions are 279 x 140 x 42 mm. Well within range for my setup.

Typically yes. They maintain 10.5 length where very few, if any other do. The 970 and 980s they even had 9.5 inch cards.
I don't really buy that nearly 6" height figure on the SC. The ftw visibly looks wider. Ideal card will be an SSC with better power delivery but maintains small size. Would like to put one in a hadron air ITX case, where 10.5 is pretty much the absolute limit without have to start cutting the case. 6 inches is too wide/tall as well, or it might just barely squeeze in with the card up against the glass lol.

I know, but looking at the pics, the ftw looks wider because the pcb is extending past the bracket, both shouldn't have the same dimensions.

Good on EVGA for not pricing everything at the Founder's Edition price and actually basing it off the $600 base model.
$670-$680 is what I would have expected to see for the higher-end versions. Still cheaper than the FE.

I wouldn't say it's overkill for a lot of 1440p or even 1080p people if they have 144hz.

In addition to these points, a new GPU is almost never overkill, it always gets taken advantage of eventually. As for why the hurry, I am still on 670s, been waiting on Pascal to drop forever to upgrade.

Slight overkill for 1440p60, not so for 144+.
I have a 1440p monitor and for high-end games (like TW3) a 1080 seems just right for that resolution if you want all the bells and whistles.
I'm really curious about non-FE 1080 reviews now, I wonder if any of them will hold 2GHz with acceptable temperatures/noise.

The great thing about a very powerful card and only 1080p is that you can downsample a basically maxed out game and still maintain 60fps.
Or if you are playing at 120+Hz you need all the power you can get to maintain that high fps.
