Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 reviews and benchmarks

So you were not in a hurry at all, but you still got caught in the hype and bought one of the most expensive versions of the card that also performs pretty bad with that cooler instead of waiting another week or two to get a good one for cheaper?

Makes sense! :P

The reports of how "bad" the FE performs is greatly overstated by internet sensationalists.

That hasn't been confirmed, has it? Isn't the idea that the non-FE cards will be better AND cheaper still speculation?

AIB cards will be faster, cheaper, quieter and cooler, that is a fact not speculation. FE is super overpriced and performance is mediocre.

It is hot and easily throttled under real-world conditions and its overclocking capabilities are limited by the cooling solution and lack of power. It is good enough if you don't care about potential improvements but better alternatives can be had if someone is patient enough to wait for one or two weeks.

Lets Hope amazon gets some an EVGA FTW or whatever is the current king of customs at that time. I'll wait until June 10th/ to order anything. These next two weeks are going to be a brutal wait for a brand new rig!

The Classified or Strix could go up to 2200.

I pre-ordered Strix already but this doesn't sound promising for Strix or perhaps any other card either considering Strix is supposed to have a pretty hefty cooler: http://www.computerbase.de/2016-05/geforce-gtx-1080-asus-zotac-partnerkarten/

Basically they overclocked the Strix to 2063MHz and after 20 minutes of Anno 2205 it was at 1898MHz. The FE had downclocked down to 1607MHz so the Strix was much better, but it too was unable to maintain high overclock. That's all the details they have so far so there's various things you could tweak and we don't know if it was power limited, temp limited etc. They said a more thorough test will follow soon so hopefully it's just a matter of increasing power limit or something, not a cooling issue.

For a 180W GPU it is fucking bad how it throttles down to base clocks because of the heat.

For people who don't touch stuff like Afterburner, they will be losing out on quite a bit of performance because of that cooler.

Pretty small die for 180W though, limits heat transfer. And seriously, if it's down 100mhz, not going to be too noticeable in real world performance. I wind up ignoring what my CPU and GPU are doing clock wise and enjoy my games just fine.

So is th Zotac AMP! Extreme the only 3 slot card so far? Kind of disappointed that Asus is limiting itself to 2 slot cooling solutions now.

Yep alright so I think the Zotac is the only 3 slot cooler out there. I think it's going to be the one to beat.

Anxiously waiting for preorders to go up.

Its overclocking abilities are limited by the default cooling solution's fan curve that prioritizes low fan speeds over boost clock. Adjusting the fan curve manually and pumping up power fixes that particular problem.

Any other AIB with a single 8pin connector (most of them) will have the exact same power limitations, and while third party cooling solutions might be quieter/more efficient, I'm doubting you'll get thermal throttling at full/close to full fan speed on the FE.

Air cooling solution is irrelevant to me anyways as my card will be getting an EK waterblock and added into a dual radiator custom watercooling loop.

I'm not sure people who don't/are unwilling to touch Afterburner or Precision X have much business purchasing a $700 GPU. It would be in their best interest to figure out how to maximize their card's potential.

Dual 8 pin plus EK block for me. Fuck it let's go!

Last I checked EK hasn't announced any non-reference PCB blocks, and if history is anything to go by, won't for a while.

Correction, 30 minutes. Was it in an open bench? Hmm, looking forward to the more thorough test. Maybe get fanspeeds then as well.

Which one did you go for in the end?

Also didn't Jay say he's gonna post an EVGA FTW review on YouTube? Or at least some numbers.

I decided to wait for the AIB cards since Im seeing that they might release as early as next week and NCIX return policy on non defect GPUs is only 7 days. That means another potential 2 week wait with a paperweight gsync monitor and HTC Vive.

When are partners supposed to officially announce release dates today?

Looks like I want the ASUS Strix card but this is all pretty confusing. When does it actually come out? Can it be ordered somewhere right now if I'm not in the UK?

Paying a big premium for something that throttles like that after a while is not a bad cooler? That's a ~15% loss in performance.

Missed the EVGA FTW preorders. Tried to find some Zotac Amp Editions to preorder, no luck. Oh well, saves me from throwing down money on a whim and will get to see how the 1070's pan out now instead.

I'm starting to think the 1080 card in general is not good at oc and those who get a high oc are lucky. But if he is adding a water block air cooling performance doesn't matter.

Good decision, I couldn't bring myself to buy founders, paying more for less is ridiculous tbh, I opted for a FTW, just hope I don't have to wait too long.

I'm simply talking about the difference between reference base and boost, or whatever part of boost people are missing out on. It's probably 5-6%.. and most people wouldn't notice without a benchmark.

You're pointing out a decent overclock vs base clock. There are simply people who won't mess with overclocking.

Overclocked things are great, but reference gear has its place. Using that logic, anyone who doesn't have everything super cooled and juiced for every last drop is living a terrible existence. I think I can order a different chip or something for my BMW to make it faster, but I'm getting along just fine.
