Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 reviews and benchmarks

Well I just snagged one of those MSIs that keep popping back up on newegg. It is overpriced, but the same cost as my FTW pre-order on Amazon after the amazon added state tax. I guess I'm all set.

I got in once before on the MSI but the order was canceled right away due to no stock. This one went through.

According to NowInStock, the MSI Gaming X flickered in stock again. Damn, NewEgg, you need a queue system. It went out of stock in a minute.

I just cancelled my FTW pre-order. I got an EVGA SC+ BP 980ti for cheap a few weeks back ($410) and was planning on selling it off when they got around to shipping the FTW. Until we have more of these in the wild and more data, I'm in no rush.

In fact, at this point it's more likely I skip the 1080 and wait until whatever comes next, hopefully there's more competition at this price bracket in another year. I'm satisfied with the purchase I did make, but for all the hype I had going into this I can't help but be a bit bummed out.

Sound plan if you have a 980ti. Also this time next year there should hopefully be more competition from AMD to keep nvidia from too much price gouging

Got my MSI Gaming X and ended up doing pretty much what I always do after installing a brand new expensive GPU: I sat down in front of my display asking myself "so............what now..?" - and then a sinking feeling from realizing that I spent a ton of money on something that couldn't possible return a tangible feeling of "wow! it was SO much worth it!"

But I know from experience it'll get better :-D

Edit: A heads up to Vive owners; The GTX 1080 "broke" (perhaps only some driver issues that Nvidia has to sort out..?) the Vive display port to breakout box mini displayport connection (appears to be a widespread issue?). Spent an hour troubleshooting....... Had to buy a displayport to hdmi and connect that to my monitor instead, and then use the hdmi cable between the card and the breakout box.

Are there any Gigabyte G1 reviews? I'm about to cancel my FTW preorder, fed up of the bullshit and OCUK making interest off my money! Does the G1 stay cool?

Yes there are a couple around. Seems to stay cool and pretty quiet - a gaffer has one too I think? Or someone on r/nvidia at least. Seemed to hold around 2025MHz on their sample at around 70c I think

I ordered one from Ebuyer as Amazon had no clue when theirs were coming in. Haven't cancelled that order yet as it was £559 and Ebuyer was £600. But my Ebuyer one shipped already and will be here tomorrow.

Will return it or sell it on if I grab a 1070 tomorrow, or my Amazon one ships

It really does look like the cooler solution on the FE was a bit flawed, especially considering the price.

I"m not sure how it's flawed. Blower coolers have pros and cons. If you want a ton of cooling then you have to listen to some air moving noises. They've done away with the fans whining and such for the most part.

The default curves prioritize quiet over cool, but keep the card at safe temps. Want a cooler card, tweak the fan curve. Not sure how it's flawed.

Speaking of the 1070, do you exactly when it goes on sale tomorrow?

If it can't keep the advertised "boost" speeds outside of the box without user tweaking, then I think it's a flawed design. I heard something about them updating the driver to help the situation, but those initial reports about throttling were concerning, especially when we are seeing partner blower cards that do not have that issue and are being sold for a lower price.

Default fan curve for me keeps the card between ~1780 and ~1820MHz

It probably has to do with how their case is cooled and ambient temps if they aren't reaching the advertised boost clock.

I don't have one, so I can't really say for certain, but I'm glad that's the case for you.

I'm mainly getting my concern from this video that was widely circulated around here a while back:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myDYnofz_JE

At least based on the benchmarks reviewed in the video, it looks like the card starts to throttle pretty hard as soon as it heats up enough. It also looks like that translates in some nasty fluctuations in performance.

Fuck. Is this software fixable?

Thank you for the heads up. I have a Vive and probably would have done the same thing.

After using an MSI Founders Edition for awhile, this card is doing great things on my X34. However, I am for sure going to buy another to SLI. Would like 100FPS at all times on Ultra with this crazy monitor. This will be the first time I am not going to SLI the same brand of card. Does that work? Or am I going to need to buy another founders card?

as long as it's two 1080's you should be fine...AFAIK

I would think so, yes, because the same displayport works via the displayport to hdmi dongle with a hdmi cable from the card to the monitor.. But this displayport does not work via a displayport to mini-displayport cable to the breakout box..

Ok great, looks like the only one I'll be able to buy relatively easy, my preferred choice has gone out of the window for necessity it seems! I actually wanna use my Vive.

Oh god guys I don't know what to do... I recently bought a Benq 1080p 144hz monitor but I'm going to be picking up a 1080 in the US this July. I have the option to refund the Benq and get a different monitor, I'm looking at the Acer G257HU (25" 1440p monitor).

If I'm honest I haven't seen a massive difference over 60-70 fps so I'm find of thinking of taking the refund and going for the higher res... any suggestions?

It's a boost speed. If it was advertised to be a base clock, then they'd call it a base clock.

Edit: And though it will vary by card, by game, by load.. my FE card is pretty much always above boost clock. I have to load it to a sustained 100% over time to get it below boost clock. Doing this requires a synthetic benchmark.

Do it.
Edit: wait, its only 60 fps?

You know I think I might... god I love amazons return policy!

EDIT: God what a terrible top of the page post...

Actually I have another question, I'll probably be limited to cash when buying in the US (on vacation) any idea if/when the likes of Best Buy will start getting non Fe cards (not going on holiday 'till July)?
Absolutely do it. Your GTX1080 will deliver you 60fps at 1440p without issue, and the bump in resolution from 1080p to 1440p is substantial.
I'm gonna do it!

Yikes. That could be iffy if Nvidia is still having problems keeping up with supply. Depending upon where you're going to be, you might check for Microcenter or CompUSA stores. They might be more likely to have AIB cards in July than Best Buy.

So I'm looking to build a new PC soon since my laptop is about to give at any minute. When do you guys think that regular GTX 1080 cards will be readily available without rushing to get it?

I like to fly by the seat of my pants, I have no problems shopping elsewhere if I can, I'll check out stores around Orlando for any Microcenter / CompUSA (I thought they went bust?) stores. Thanks man.

I think things will improve for the 1080 in July, especially from Newegg/Amazon. You may have to pick one model over another due to availability, but you shouldn't have too much trouble. By August pretty much all models should be in stock most of the time.

The 1070, though...that's going to be a tough ticket for a while, I'd bet.

That's awesome if the problem isn't widespread. It's just that initial reports were somewhat concerning. In that video I posted, it showed some games not being able to boost at all due to heat issues after 20 minutes in the game. That kind of behavior would be unacceptable for me and it's evident that needing to drop below boost clocks is not an issue for the partner cards with custom blower solutions.

Any 1080 should work, but hard bridges like the High Bandwidth one will require the same height/board. Anything with a reference board should be fine.

I went through this thing when the 680 first game out, what a nightmare. I think I'll just kick back until EVGA's FTW edition is readily available and go for it then. I'm not gonna stress myself out about it. I specifically want EVGA this time since their warranty system seems really good (word of mouth from friends).

I'm still trying to decide if I want to just upgrade my card or do a full rebuild anyways (from i5 2500k with ddr3 ram to i7 6700k & ddr4 ram).

is it worth getting a 1080 if I only have a 2500k? My 2500k is OC's to 4.4ghz just wondering if I would be better to upgrade my mobo, ram (from 8GB to 16GB) and CPU to a 6600k. I currently have a 970 if that matters.

It depends on the game, of course, but I imagine you would see bigger performance gains going from a 970 -> 1080 than going from a 2500k -> 6600k.

After watching Jayztwocents MSI 1080 review, that pretty much confirms to me that I need not to worry about buying a higher end card. When the time comes, I will just find the best value custom cooler card.

Here in the UK it's looking like the Inno3D iChill Air Boss X3 or X4 is the best value card (assuming that the price doesn't go up like the rest of them over here). It's available to pre-order from Overclockers here. It's £90 cheaper than the Asus Strix and it's boost clock is only 38MHz less. They also have the X4 with an extra fan for 20 quid extra.

I suspect it's going to go up in price like the rest of them though.

Only Overclockers appear to be selling it so far though.
