Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 reviews and benchmarks

I'm about the give up on waiting and just grab a FE edition. The Custom models aren't even available for pre-order in my country and what's worse, they seem to be more expensive.

OK that's good to know, thanks. I'm using four fans. Two drawing air in the front, one drawing out the back, and one drawing out the top. I have space for one more out of the top. I have a P400, so maybe my case is too small in general... My motherboard temp is 43 during gameplay, PCH 53

Would getting an all-in-one water cooling for my cpu help? Something like what Corsair offers in the hydro series? I'm even considering an HG10 when they offer it for the 1080. Not sure what else to do.

Well, I think it's not just about the number of fans, but type as well (how much they put in and take out), and position.

Myself currently, I have 1 fan pushing into my case, lower front of the case, 1 fan pulling out upper rear of the case (mounted on an h90 corsair radiator, all-in-one water cooling), and my blower type cooler on the graphicscard pushing some air out. (and of course the PSU, but that's pulling in and pushing out separately, also, the fans hardly ever run on it). And the ambient temp for me holds ok even when gaming.

When I get my new card (hopefully this coming week), I plan on adding an extra fan to push air into the case, getting some overpressure in the case, no new fans for pulling out. Hopefully, it works well and the ambient temp will hold steady (currently usually holding around 30 degrees Celsius ambient.)

Blah. Gave up and bought a FE. Not planning to do any OC at all so no reason for special cooling I guess. Should arrive by Monday. This card should last me until 1180ti at least.

Glad I'm not the only one getting extra fans.

When I built my soon to be VR machine in November I REALLY wanted an updated Antec 1200 case because the air flow and temps were amazing. Three fans at the front pushing in air, two at the back pulling air out and a humongous fan at the top pushing air out.

My GR-One case has two fans at the front pushing air in, a (broken) fan behind one of those pushing air in further, one fan at the back pulling air out and one at the top pulling air out.

I was a bit annoyed about that broken fan, one of the wires has come loose from the connector. Can't figure out a way to fix it, but by the time I noticed it was buggered I had everything connected and I couldn't be arsed to take it all apart and RMA it lol

So I'm buying one to replace the broken one, two to go in the bottom of the case and another one to go in the top. :oD

I have a huge 230mm front intake fan and a single 140mm exhaust fan at the back. Wonder if I should get another fan for a top exhaust. What's a good way to stress test the whole system so I can monitor temps?

Being cheap is fun. Amazon sent me a shipping notice for my G1 Friday, and since I got super saver shipping they say they'll ship it out 6/20 for arrival by 6/23. I'd imagine they'll have a shipping window open up before then, but it's gonna be a long two weeks otherwise.

I'd be interested to see what your temps are like after a 1-2 hour gaming session. I've managed to OC to the point that I am getting 1987MHz stable in Doom with temps between 74-76. My max stable OC puts my temps over 80 during a long gaming session.

If you haven't played Doom yet......it's incredible.

Can't play until tomorrow probably now but doom was the last thing I was playing a few weeks ago, until I sold my 970 :)

I was getting 1984 clocks just running the benchmarks out of the box - no overclocking done. Will see how it does after a longer gaming session.

Is there a way to get afterburner (or something else) to log temps/clocks etc to a file?

Are those temps with a G1?

Yeah, settings > monitoring > hardware monitor logging properties (roughly translated) should allow this.

EVGA SC

I got a 24000 graphics score in Firestrike. Average 2050-2088mhz through the whole thing and a few scenes were 2126. I just don't like having the temps in the low 80s in long game sessions.

Hmmmm that's disappointing! I'll either have the ACX 3 vanilla or FTW by the end of next week, I thought it would be cooler than that! What percentage are your fans running at?

When I'm in Doom, the temps get near 80, they're at about 80%. With stock clocks, I run at about 1925 and about 70C

Wow, the SC version is 50 bucks more. I got fucked over

At this point I don't even care if I have to pay 50$ more... I just want a card. The whole system fucking pisses me off... Especially since NCIX basically just went to "Order Processed" right away so they already took the money out of my account even if they don't even have an ETA for the card yet...

yeah...honestly I don't see the reason for buying an SC card (other than the box being different and it having that little SC part on the card)

the boards are the same between it and the plain ACX 3.0...the lights are the same (both white)...you're just paying $30 extra for a slight OC that you can do yourself on the plain version

Glad to hear that, since I just ordered an ACX 3.0 :p

Now, the wait...

Alright so I have a pre-order down in store at NCIX for the EVGA ACX 3.0.

I might still switch it over to the Asus Strix once that comes in stock, depending on the pricing. It's a damned beautiful looking card. Something about the dual-fan design on the EVGA makes me feel like I'd be better off with a 3 fan beast like the Asus.

edit: hmmm...Asus switched to horizontal heatpipes for the 1080 Strix. That's disappointing. The vertical heatpipes resulted in a much bigger card, but both it and the MSI last gen seemed to perform better for it.

Hmmm yeah, the MSI Gaming X 1080 seems to be the only one with vertical heatpipes. Too bad it's so expensive. Hopefully NCIX gets better pricing.

the US pricing on that card is higher too...all of the other cards it competes with are below FE pricing while it's about $20-$30 above that mark

Early impressions:

Gigabyte Xtreme Gaming Engine tool works but is otherwise kind of crap. I've already gone back to MSI Afterburner, so I guess no flashy RGB LEDs for me unless I keep it running just for that lol.

The G1 has only a 108% power limit, lower than the EVGA FTW and MSI Gaming X. During FFXIV Heavensward benchmark, I was seeing the clock speed bouncing wildly between 2083 and 1964. Unlocked VBIOS can't come soon enough.

+100 core voltae
108% power limit
+150 core clock
+780 memory clock

Seems to work fine in FFXIV Heavensward benchmark, though I'm not real sure what the true max clock is because it keeps on throttling on power limit and the core clock keeps fluctuating up and down. I'll try less stressful benchmarks to see if this thing can hold a stable clock or not.

No im pretty sure the msi is at 108% too since i remember Jayztwocents complaining that he couldnt raise it like the FE.

Could it be that way because it's going 108% from an already factory boosted speed?

admittedly I have no idea how it's supposed to work so I'm just throwing out an idea

Yes, as far as I'm aware the base power limit is different across cards/vendors.

So, 108% on the GB and MSI isn't the same as 108% on the FE

The base amount of power supplied is different. One of the more interesting differences in these AIB cards. Actual power limit on the the MSI is much higher than the FE, even though the sliders look the same.

I saw a review which showed this a few days ago but now I can't find it to save my life. My Google Fu is failing me.

I was getting driver resets on Heaven with +150, had to back it down to +120 to make it not do that. Holding a mostly steady 2050, I'm seeing a second of two of 2038 and 2025 every now and then.

I've been looping 3DMark Firestrike Ultra for awhile to heat things up.

3DMark is crazy sensitive to overly OC'd memory. The screen was blinking black and having sparkles when the FFXIV Heavensward benchmark and Heaven looked absolutely pristine. I've had to back the memory all the way down to +590 from +780 to make the artifacting go away. With the clock still set to +120, I'm seeing the clock speed settling in at 1962, making it the harshest benchmark I've run so far in terms of forcing the clock to throttle back.

I'll let 3DMark loop for awhile since I'm watching the Copa America and check the temps after the game is over.

After an hour of 3DMark Fire Strike Ultra (Test 1):

Temp 66C
Fan Speed 47% (1985 rpm)
Core 1911-1987 (+120)
Memory 5594 (+590)

3DMark is definitely power hungry, hitting the brick wall which is the power limit. I wonder what kind of clocks I could sustain once modded VBIOS comes out, as GPU voltage was only around 0.943 to 0.981, there was a lot of headroom there but power limit says nope.

I am wondering if Firestrike just isn't as demanding as certain games. My details and temps in Firestrike are similar. It's Doom that wrecks my temps. After more than 20-30 minutes of play.

Thanks for posting that.

OK, I played DOOM for about 30 minutes just to see.

Temp 67C
Fan Speed 47% (1982 rpm)
Core 2000-2038
Memory 5594

Framerate was pretty amazing, easily holding 60+ fps in 4K with all settings maxed. The idTech 5 engine continues to impress.
