Nvidia Kepler - Geforce GTX680 Thread - Now with reviews

So the 690 has 4GB of ram, but it's spread across two 680's, meaning it's still only really 2GB, right?

All I want is ONE 680 with 4GB of ram. :/

Sweet birthday is may 3rd, maybe I should pick 2 of these up
Oh it's on.
Where did you hear it was supposed to be able to handle more voltage? Jacob, the EVGA product manager is running 2 in SLI, and he seems to be capped at around 1254 mhz, which is where most users on reference cards start seeing crashes.
Forum speculation from some folks, which is why I put a supposedly there. Thanks for the info!

Yeah depending on price and performance, I wouldn't mind picking up 2 of these for Quad SLI. Would certainly look much better as I transition back to my FT02 case.

Well I was think 4way 680s eventually but then I have to sacrifice my sound card and wireless card. I may be moving soon so I could do wired again it I love my asus xonar + pc350s too much to give up.

What would be the better buy, a GTX 690 with 2 680's in it with 2GB of ram each, or a 680 with 4GB of ram?

My screen resolution is 1920 x 1080, but I do occasionally run dual monitors. I figured more ram would be better for high-resolution renders of high poly models in Maya, 3DSMax, Mudbox/Zbrush, etc... but perhaps the 690 would be better?

Depends how much power you actually need.
Dual GPU cards often are worse value, slightly slower, louder, and worst at expelling heat.

Check your VRAM usage with MSI Afterburner and see how much RAM you need.

So the 680 is the true successor to the 580 then? What us the downside of a dual card? (590/690)
Nope. The 680 is the 570 successor because of delays and 28nm issues plus AMD's lackluster 7xxx series.

GK110 will be the true 680 and probably named 685 or 680Ti or something, but that's a few months away.

I am not 100% sure with Nvidia but I know with AMD dual GPU cards you cannot disabled Crossfire. That can be a serious issue because there are games out there that hate crossfire or work better without it. AMD usually fixes the problem via driver updates but relying on AMD's driver team is something I would wish on no one.

I have 2 6950 running in Crossfire and I find myself glad I have the ability to disable Crossfire when I need too.

Dual-Core GPU run hotter and slower than an actual SLI setup of the same cards. Also make more noise as the fan(s) have to work a bit harder to push out all that excess heat. Yes, they are cheaper than two of the actual cards, but for a reason. So honestly, you are much better off getting a real SLI setup unless room is an issue or you really want to nickel and dime.

What? That's absolutely not true.

I was rocking a 5970 for the longest and ALWAYS had the ability to turn dual GPU off either via catalyst ai or through a profile in the new drivers.

Dont know why people still say that the 680 is the 570 sucessor.

Right now the 680 is the 580 sucessor no matter how people say its because of the lackluster performance of AMD 7000 series.

They cant even maitain good yelds of gk104 let alone to have a kepler variant with more stream processors.

Next high end single GPU from nvidia will be 780, and will not be in our hands at least until the end of the year.

I'm just wondering which card will end up on top. Given scaling, the 690 and 7990 are going to be very close in performance. It will be interesting to see which one gets the overclocking edge as well.

First, Crossfire Profiles are not Drivers. There's a single guy who works on those outside of the AMD driver team, and releases them separately.

Second, you don't even need them anymore since you can create your own custom profiles. Same with NVIDIA and SLI.

Hell, according to the chips name it originally was targeted as the GTX 660 let alone the 670. It's not hard to understand how the GTX 680 rename occured.

I've spoken to several people with 6990's who cannot disable crossfire in the drivers with new drivers.

Perhaps the older cards you can.

There's a lot to be said for that. But this thing doesn't seem to be shipping in any kind of numbers. 500 dollars cards don't constantly sell out unless it's a low volume item. So clearly they're not exactly rolling off the assembly line with the efficiency needed to be a 660 part (even if that's what it was originally designed to be).

Ive never heard of this. I have always been able to disable crossfire either using CCC or RadeonPro. If 6990s could not disable xfire I would think there would be a bigger stink by now since most new game releases have xfire issues.

AMD seems to have put the ability back in the latest drivers (12.3) but for a few months and several driver versions (back in the 10.x-11.x days) multiple people on the forums complained about the ability to disabled crossfire on dial gpu AMD cards was missing from CCC

690?
Yes.

i love it, but seems to only work with newegg? i prefer amazon (prime membership, no sales tax in my area). thank you though!!

yeah a program like this for amazon would be pretty awesome. The nice thing about this is that you can use it for any newegg item really, not just the 680. It has a pretty bad memory leak though, so you should close it and reopen it around every hour.

Whoa. So I was hearing reports about coil whine on both 7970s and 680s so I just wanted to make sure my Palits weren't effected, so I ran both in my current rig. Decided to try out my usual GPU killer GTA IV + Icenhancer 1.35.

With SSAO on my 580, it'd range between 2 and 15 FPS, with the Palit it was oddly stuck at 22. It ran smooth but it didn't dip and it didn't go over.

Without SSAO and the magic happened, that would net me 15-25 FPS on the 580, here I'd get 50-60 varied, felt so good. So I already tip my hat to the 680.

Can't wait to get these bad boys in an SLI setup. GTA did have a few problems with the 4GB of memory though, it saw them in options but claiming it was using 200mb and I had exceeded my limit.

Are you guys looking to grab any 680 when it gets available? or are you looking for only certain brands.types. Like only EVGA overclocked one?
