Nvidia Shield Thread

Well I feel silly, for whatever reason I thought it was a 3. Suppose it won't be replaced any time soon then, although I don't keep as much track on their mobile graphics schedule. Apparently there is a Tegra 4 revision unveiled? Just don't want to buy one of these and have it be made useless a month later when the better version comes out. With a Vita or what have you the hardware will remain the same.
No need to feel silly :)

This is the first device with the new Tegra tech. I imagine we'll be using this one for the next while.

So can anyone play Batman Arkham City? Its unplayable for me, there is tons of freezing and stuttering, tried disabling v-sync, Dx 11 and turning off Hyper threading in my 2600k but nothing :(, if I play the game without streaming it works just fine.

I would appreciate any tips :)

I dont think its an issue with my router because Alan Wake and Dark Souls play fine.

At PAX they had a video of them blowing it up with fireworks to show all the parts inside. It was quite a hilarious video and I'm sad that I couldn't find it to link here.

Oh crap they finally put it up!

That was sweet!

PS VIta... PS VIta TV... Nintendo 3DS... Nvidia Shield...... Nvidia Shield...... Nvidia Shield...... Nvidia Shield......

Played a bit of Fallout 3, the shield in the first floor and the router in the basement, it works awesome with small problems from time to time.

Like the review above, sometimes I need to restart my PC.

Also I want to ask for help to run batman arkham city, its a stuttery mess even if im standing in front of the router.

The geforce xperience doesnt detect any of the games I have installed that are part of their supported list, probably because I didnt install them in the C: drive.

Anyway this thing is cool but you will need to go back to your PC from time to time to fix a small issue. Better to use something like VNC viewer so u can remote from the shield to your gaming PC

that's weird.. what router do you have? do you have a dual band router?

What issue did you have with it? Mine clicks on UP and it travels a bit

I stated my issue up above in my review, but the issue I had with it is that sometimes when you click left or right, it would click up (due to the DPad traveling and not staying centered) The DPad worked fine regardless, but it affected me playing Kirby and Street Fighter II. Besides, if I'm paying 300$ I want everything to work lol. Everything else on the shield worked fine for me, however. I noticed some other people in this thread were saying they had a DPad issue and got theirs fixed so that's why I filed the RMA.

So I think I found why Dark Souls works for some people and not for others.

I cant get the game to work if I have Durante DSFix installed, it doesnt like something about the streaming.

If I run the game without streaming it works just fine.

Too bad because I was dying to supersample it :(

Maybe someone here has dark Souls running with DSFix and im just doing something wrong?
Mine was running with dsfix + 60fps, downsampled from 2560x1440 (though I'm not sure how much of a difference that made with the stream limited to 720p)

By traveling, you mean the dpad moves around right? You're probably experiencing the Shield's bad dpad diagonals and that isn't caused by the moving dpad (my replacement shield's dpad still moves around if I force it). Does yours make clicking noises too if you press on any of the 4 directions of the dpad? Mine did that when pressing Left, Up and Right and the RMA replacement remedied that issue and had a tighter dpad. The diagonals were still pretty sensitive and I think there's nothing we can do about that since its probably a design issue with the dpad's internals. Still, my new Shield feels a whole lot better due to the tighter, more quiet dpad so the RMA was worth it for me.

How weird, my Shield couldn't see my pc all of a sudden. I already had the latest version of GFE and was able to stream for a week before today.

I did a bit of research and found that you have to make sure there's a streaming tab under preferences. Mine didn't have one (though it might have been there before when streaming was working??) so I reinstalled the same version of GFE and now got streaming to work again.

How did you get Fallout 3 to work? Mine worked fine until you jumped into VATS and it would freeze up. Also, it froze during conversations.

OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD!!!

It runs PERFECTLY.

It feels exactly like playing a Wii U game on the Wii U Game Pad. I'm just using some comcast router at that! OH MY GOD! WOOO!!!! YEAHHHHH

I had to right click steam and make sure the compatibility stuff was unchecked in all users, but after that everything runs perfect.

Yep. Haha.

I'll check those out! thanks!
I tried this as well and its amazing how good it looks on the small screen. Streaming 30fps games feels almost native to me.

Now I just need to position my router (which is also an old, not even meeting the recommended requirements, from comcast router) on higher ground to provide the best coverage

Read your post geo and the new Shield I got completely fixed my DPad problems. I LOVE this device. It's the ultimate emulator machine.

I literally got my replacement shield the next day.

Nice. Mine arrived too a day after the RMA was approved (total of 2 days).

Do the diagonals still bother you?

Actually, I don't have any issues with it anymore. It's a solid DPad. Much more solid than Madcatz and the 360's DPad. It's not Sega Saturn level, but it's still pretty good and fully functional.

Can u please tell me how to run dark souls with dsfix? Mine always fails unless I delete Dinput8.DLL

Sounds more like an issue with fallout 3. Make sure you installed the unofficial patch for it, I have played around 5 hours with my shield

For those who have 3DS XL's, if you have an extra top screen cover, it'll fit the nvidia shield perfectly. Just be precise with it.

I put one on just now since that finger was getting kind of bothersome. Now no more finger!

-edit-

The battery life on this device is insane. 4 hours of gameplay and I still have 90% battery.

Silly me. The only reason I was having stream issues was because my Shield wasn't updated. Now it works great without me having to restart my computer.

But its not 60fps :(. 30fps games though are sweet on this thing.

By the way, I was on live chat again with nvidia support. I showed them a video of my problem with the dpad diagonals (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCdOvYn4fA8). They tested a couple of Shield units they had there and they all unfortunately had the same behavior :(. I guess no amount of RMAs will fix this until they make changes to the internals of the dpad itself.

How this got past QA is beyond me.

Actually, although it is 30FPS, since the game is originally running at 60 FPS, you can still play with the same "handling" I guess you could say. Like if I play with the 30 FPS hack of Melee it feels awful, but if I keep it at 60 FPS and stream 30 FPS, it feels perfectly fine.

4 hours streaming or playing android games?

My shield has really bad battery life for some reason, I'm suspecting it is because I have apps with notifications like Twitter.

Anyone know how to tell which apps are killing battery life?

Anyone here members at the geforce.com site forum (I know SiDCrAzY is)? I was just replying to one of the Shield threads there and after refreshing the board, all the topics went away and it looks like the admins are slowly rebuilding it again with new categories lol.

What's that all about? Too much complaining on the board?

New Geforce Experience that improves some things for streaming. If you use the streaming, definitely get this.

https://forums.geforce.com/default/...treaming-bug-when-windows-dpi-set-to-gt-100-/

But yeah, I'm loving this device as a emulator machine. The DPI override (I think that's what it's called?) makes any sprite based game have perfect pixels and no blur despite the difference in resolution. Having N64 on the go (not streaming, from the device itself) is awesome.

If only there was a Dreamcast emulator. lol

I played SNES, then N64, than game boy emulators. Actually, my battery life across everything is insane. I have Gmail but I dont have twitter so that might be it.

What do you mean by the dpi override? Very interested

It's just something that natively happens. I only saw the wording on one emulator, but it happens on every one. I think it's something native to Android and maybe iOS devices.

If you play any game with sprites, GBA, GBC, DS, PS1, N64, Genesis, or SNES, if you go into the options and turn off the blur filtering, you will see the perfect pixels no matter what the system due to this feature.

From my understanding it resizes the squares to fit the resolution, thus, perfect pixels.

Can I play with the shield while someone else uses the computer? My wife is usually writing paper so I don't have much time to play anymore, but It would be cool to play while in the couch.

Unfortunately no, it's literally mirroring what your computer is doing.

I forgot this thing has an HDMI port. Oh snap, I'll hook this up to a TV and play my emulators on that.

You can't stream with it while someone is using the computer, but you can use it to play emulators and android games while someone is using the computer. It's essentially a tablet.

Sounds like you're talking about bilinear filtering, which just adds a filter to smooth out the image/pixels when blown up to fit your screen resolution. I normally disable this too to preserve the look of the games.

I've seen DPI override options though when using a custom rom on my android phone (s3). It allows you to adjust the default DPI of your device so that you can have it act like a phone, or a tablet. This seems to have an effect on screen/ui elements and their sizes

Unfortunately no, since what appears on screen is what is being streamed to the Shield. This would be a pretty cool feature though if it was implemented, but I don't know how some games would behave when running in the background.

That is what I'm talking about, but normally what would happen when you disable bilinear filtering on something that doesn't fit the resolution of your device it would look awful due to it being the incorrect dimensions.

Earlier on in this thread I mentioned Game Boy Color's vertical resolution, 144, x5 = 720, which is the Nvidia Shield's vertical resolution. That was awesome cause that meant perfect pixels. However, Game Boy Advance and every other emulator on this device does perfect pixels despite their vertical resolution either being too small or too big to perfectly sync with 720p. Due to this feature on Android and I believe iOS devices, it automatically resizes the pixel square so that the games have perfect pixels, you can see the fullscreen, and there aren't errors on it since there is no stretching. Emulators automatically do this without you having to toggle settings on Android.
