Nvidia Shield Thread

That is what I'm talking about, but normally what would happen when you disable bilinear filtering on something that doesn't fit the resolution of your device it would look awful due to it being the incorrect dimensions.

Earlier on in this thread I mentioned Game Boy Color's vertical resolution, 144, x5 = 720, which is the Nvidia Shield's vertical resolution. That was awesome cause that meant perfect pixels. However, Game Boy Advance and every other emulator on this device does perfect pixels despite their vertical resolution either being too small or too big to perfectly sync with 720p. Due to this feature on Android and I believe iOS devices, it automatically resizes the pixel square so that the games have perfect pixels, you can see the fullscreen, and there aren't errors on it since there is no stretching. Emulators automatically do this without you having to toggle settings on Android.
I think emulators like Retroarch by default stretch the image until it fills the screen. They do this while keeping aspect ratio on the system being emulated in check as well to keep the image from being distorted, unless you override that and set it to other ratios like 4:3, 16:9 etc.

This is an example of what would happen with GBA.

Although if you start stretching it, pixels start going out of whack and the image starts looking awful since its being taken out of it's resolution and not duplicated x2, x3, or x3, etc.

The altering of the DPI makes the squares non-stretched, but the squares themselves resized so that nothing is stretched. It's similar to how 720p has smaller squares compared to 480p, and thus, more sharper image. In this case, a separate resolution is not needed.

You can use the shader pixellate to fix that problem on PC, but last I checked it isn't included with the android version of RetroArch. I think the script they use to convert .cg shaders to .glsl (usable on android) doesn't work with that particular one for some reason.

Here's an example of the shader off vs. on scaled up to 1080p with 4:3 aspect ratio correction:

It adds very minimal blurring compared to bilinear.

I've decided I want one of these, there any deals going around or is 300 it all around? If so I might just go by gamestop and pick one up as it's listed as in-stock. Of course there's tax so it works out to 324 or something like that, does the Nvidia site charge tax? Newegg didn't when I last used it in October.

Update:

No controller issues yet. This is a real solid device. I purchased that Mad Catz MLG Pro Circuit Controller a while back that's like 100$ and that didn't hold up after the first few days so It's nice to see someone else besides Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft make good controllers these days.

It's based on where you live by state law. I live in Texas as well, and this is how much it cost me when I bought from it from their store.

Subtotal $299.00
Tax $27.31

I got a Nvidia Shield shirt in the mail. lol Not sure why, maybe it's a bonus for using the store.

It's kind of big on me so I'll use it as a bed shirt.

I just got my shield. But I don't know what to do with it. What's a good, recent android game to use if at his "fullish" potential?

Dead Trigger 2 is coming out later this month, that should show some of its potential. Not sure if it will be the full potential.

Maybe Dead on Arrival 2?

Question guys,

The Nintendo Gameboy Advance and (I think)the NDS allows you to play local multiplayer(VS or coop) via a link cable and 3DS allows local wireless play. The PSP also allows you to play multiplayer via what it calls "WLAN".

Does the Nvidia Shield have this capability? Where up to four or maybe five or six Shields can connect wirelessly *without* the need for a WiFi hotspot connection? If so, what are some good fun Android games that allow you to play with up to 4, 5 or 6 people locally?

My review so far:

Pros:
  • The device is Powerful. It feels way smoother than my OG galaxy Note and even my iPad Mini.
  • The build quality feels great. It feels like a high-end device.
  • The controls are good so far.
  • Touch only games aren't nearly as hard to control as I imagined.

Cons:
  • The device is too big. And I say this a Galaxy Note owner. I can fit my Vita, Note and 3DS on my pockets no problems. Even my iPad Mini with some minor discomfort. But not this device.
  • It feels "unbalanced". The screens feels a little small for the size of the device.
  • Android (and Mobile) games still suck. Well, not everything sucks, but the library isn't very appealing for me at least. Many games get a pass because "well, is cool to have a game like this one on my phone!". But playing them In a dedicated device shows me all their faults.

While I think the screen size is good for the res being display, I kinda agree on it being small when it comes to streaming. If only the screen didn't have those huge bezels

I'm really loving playing FFXIV on my bed with this, I should invest into a dual-band router sometime. It runs good with my current comcast router, but I can't imagine how good it'd run with a dual-band one.

Dam, this device does get hot. Also, I'm experiencing battery life bellow the advertised.

Mine has never gotten hot, maybe warm, but that's it.

What are you doing with yours mostly? Streaming? The battery has been great so far, but it lasts less with high end Android games.

I just bought one today. Loving it so far. Can't wait to get off work and dig into it.

Expendable, a arcade shooter that comes with it is mindless fun, I remember playing it on the Dreamcast, but having two sticks makes the game more enjoyable.

Suggestions:

Here are some good free emulators I recommend. (Remember to setup your controller and remove the UIs on these emulators)

Game Boy / Game Boy Color

John GBC Lite

Nintendo 64

SuperN64

Super Nintendo

Snes9x EX+

Playstation Portable / PSP

PPSSPP

Pay Emulators that are good

Playstation

ePSXe

Sega Genesis

MD.Emu

Game Boy / Game Boy Color

Drastic is a good DS emulator, but it doesn't support resume previous game so that kind of sucks.

Both mine have had amazing battery life, but one does get warmer than the other. Actually, my replacement one doesn't get warm.

Cool, thanks. Is there a good Genesis/Sega CD emulator?

What the difference between PPSSPP and PPSSPP Gold?

Replacement one? Plz, don't tell me mine is defective... anyway, by hot I mean the lower part where the heat sink is, so maybe that's normal.

And how does PPSSPP runs the God of War and Resistance: R? I own a Vita, but I have no interest on buying them again. I own the UMD.

I haven't found a good Genesis one sadly. Well, I mean, you can play games just fine, they just are really lacking in features. GenPlusDroid I think is the best one, and it's free.
RetroArch's Genesis Plus GX core is really good, but they got pulled from the Play store and are still working to get back up there. You can still get their apk from their android page here and sideload it though.

I only swapped mine cause of a DPad issue I had.

better off asking in this thread as the developers I think post there.

PPSSPP Emulation and Discussion Thread

Keep in mind that God of War is a very demanding PSP game.

Awesome! I'll get this asap. Thanks.

Retroarch got pulled? Didn't know that. Their forum has also been down for like a week now.

About the Shield getting hot, mine only gets warm at the bottom center where the fan is so I'm good since my hands aren't anywhere near it. Good thing the fan exhausts at the back too

Decided to test out Dolphin on a stream, and it works much better than I ever anticipated:

I just have to make some game specific shortcuts instead of a general shortcut to dolphin.

Couldn't figure out how to get RetroArch to work, so I purchased this emulator I just found called MD.Emu (Megadrive/Genesis emulator) and it runs flawlessly and has all the features I like. I love playing games on android devices due to those delicious full screen perfect pixels you can't get while emulating games on a PSP.

So yeah, MD.Emu is a good one although it's like 4 bucks.

Mobile gaming is really a wasteland. Such a pity that such great hardware gets wasted. :(

Anyway, I bought Riptide GP2 and is decent enough so far. Graphics are good. I was a bit hesitant at first since I got the first one on my phone and the touch controls killed the game for me.

Did they spend like an afternoon designing this thing? Looks like a cheap toy you find in bargain bins.

It's the best handheld gaming device I've ever held, and I've had or played the following:

Game Boy
Game Boy Pocket
Game Boy Color
Game Boy Advance
Game Boy SP
Nintendo DS
Nintendo DS Lite
Nintendo DSi
Nintendo DSi XL
Nintendo 3DS
Nintendo 3DS XL
Playstation Portable 1000, 2000, 3000
Playstation Vita

Build quality is fantastic and it feels nice actually having non flat controls.

I meant more in an aesthetic way. It looks like if Sloth made a poo poo.

Yes aesthetically it's not very pleasing but I do love this thing. Emulation is great and the screen is nice and crisp. Streaming is nice but still too many hiccups for me. I do have some interference though confirmed by wifi analyzer. But it's not as smooth as wiiu game pad streaming. I've been waiting for an upgrade to the shields os to help smooth this out but nothing in a while. And the nvidia store hasn't had anything substantial added since launch more than two months ago.

I couldn't care lass about is aesthetic. Functionality goes first.

Exactly. Most handhelds like the 3DS and Vita (and their predecessors) are designed for looks without thinking much about the ergonomics. The trend to make everything thinner is detrimental to the comfort of those devices.

Nvidia took the opposite approach and created a full size controller. It's not perfect, but it's reasonably comfortable, and the design looks fine.

Revelation. I just realized you can use this as a portable digital console. Get a PS3 controller or a Wiimote, hook it up to your TV and play things comfortably on the big screen on your couch. Dat N64 and PS1 720p.

I haven't been following the Shield much lately but have they announced a price drop or anything? I'm still interested in getting it something next year.

Can you expand on this? I've been hesitant in trying Dolphin on the Shield as I'd figured it'd be a total wash.
