Nvidia Shield Thread

If you plan on using a dualshock 3 though, I think you need to have your Shield rooted to pair the controller to it using a separate app. Wired controllers will work even when not rooted

I plan using the DualShock 4 and some original NES/SNES/Genesis controllers through a USB adapter. I hope it works then I could finally move the old consoles to the basement and have something small hooked up to my TV just for emulation purposes.

Finally back from my Vegas trip, time to dip into what this thing can do now that I have my replacement. Fool me once nVidia, I'm charging this thing to full this time before I even look at it :-D.

Up first I'm going to be trying out DraStic along with Daigasso band brothers. Great memories with that game but I've never gotten around to replacing my broken screen DS Phat to play it.

After that it's time to try out some Riptide GP!

Have owned this thing since September 9th and it's still solid and fully functional to this day. No issues and great quality.

When I get my mini HDMI to HDMI cable it's going to also be my portable N64 and home console along with PS1, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, and tons more!

I recently got a HDMI cable for it and its awesome, only issue is that I dont know if I can pair a Ps3 DS3 to it via Bluetooth without rooting.

AFAIK, the only way to pair a DS3 controller to an android device is to use the sixaxis app on the Playstore, and that requires you to be rooted.

I also bought a cheap hdmi adapter the other week and it does look pretty sweet on a tv/monitor. Unfortunately, the only OTG cable I have looks like this:

For some reason, the Shield is the only device I have with a microusb slot that's upside down, meaning that shape of my otg cable gets in the way of my hdmi adapter :(

If rooted, could I pair 2 controllers to the device via Bluetooth for 2-player console-like action on my TV?

My girlfriend has this desire to play Twisted Metal 3, but she doesn't want to move the PS3 from the livingroom because we have a lot of Rockband stuff she likes playing when friends come over.

This is the app you need:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dancingpixelstudios.sixaxiscontroller&hl=en

and according to the description, it supports up to 4 controllers at once. I guess it all depends on the game/emulator if you'll be able to use multiple controllers at the same time. Retroarch might, but I haven't tried yet

Thanks for the pointer on that application. I will have to give it a go.

In the mean time, I remembered that when I had my Xperia Play I mistakenly bought the awful Minecraft Pocket Edition alpha that barely worked and was trash...

Well with a good gamepad mapper profile, I managed to waste the last 4 hours playing the latest version on Shield. I should just stream the PC version, but the Pocket Edition is actually really good now and will allow me to mine during my lunch break at work.

You have to experiment a little bit with profiles until you find one that you like but there's a LOT of fun to be had. nvidia nailed this gamepad mapper update.

I'm finding that the on screen mapper really isn't ready yet. The only games that I found it to work well in are simple games with fixed controls on the screen.

Movement seems glitchy with an analog stick, and any game that has dynamic buttons are the hardest to configure.

The mapper is not perfect, but some of the community mappings work well with more "complicated" games, like Minecraft.

Some of those mappings are things I couldn't do myself and just thought it wasn't possible.

Is there an OnLive app that works on the Shield? I can't stream from my PC and was wondering. I have Amnesia on Onlive and would love to play that on the Shield when I pick one up.

The one on the Play store works really well, but OnLive isn't updating with new games often enough lately for me to believe they'll stay in business past next year. You're better off signing up for alerts about the Nvidia Grid beta if you're in the US.

Obviously if you own stuff already that pontificating on my part is irrelevant to you, that was just my take when I tried it recently. The app itself works really well though.

That is great news! Is it touch only games or does it support the use of the analog sticks?

I just want to drop a mention of GTA San Andreas here. I've been playing it quite a bit lately, and it runs fantastically on the Shield.

There's a couple of nagging control issues though, but they don't get in the way too much.

Anyone know a way to get the Shield streaming to a Mobile card? Have a 770M in a laptop that I'd like to use, it should be capable of handling it but the website says it's not supported.

EDIT:

Found this if anyone is interested.

Yea, splashtop is the only solution for you. The chipset utilized for streaming (and game capture) is only present on the desktop cards, and only on the 600 and 700 series.

Is this the best place to talk to like-minded folks about this thing or does the Shield/Nvidia have a dedicated forum for it somewhere? I know I could google it, but I figure you guys would be a better resource.

As I've stated a while back, I'm watching this thread closely and the only reason I haven't bought one yet is because I have a 570 and the only reason I would buy a new video card is for this thing.

I also am hesitant to drop 300 bucks for a shield when I don't know how well Splashtop would work since it's not the native app with internal support.

Edit: Thanks SiD

So I just picked up a Shield and it is an awesome device! I just love it. I just wish it would have games designed just for it as I don't thing we will ever see what it can really do.

I recently upgraded to a 770 4GB and tried the Nvidia's streaming. At first i was disappointed since I had lag issues with Metro Last Light, but then I limited the streaming to 30fps and I was pleasantly surprised by it's performance.

However, compression artifacts are evident. I tried Crysis 3 and it doesn't look like Crysis 3 at 720p with very high DPI, not even close. It looks very muddy. You can't really appreciate the details afforded by running the game at very high.

This made me appreciate Nintendo's accomplishment even more.

Streaming was a lot better before. Some folks over on the nvidia forums said that the streaming bandwidth before the 60fps update was 25mbps, now it's 10mbps. The change was probably to accommodate the people who had routers that couldn't handle the bandwidth.

Hopefully, they'll release another update allowing you to customize the bandwidth like they did for the framerate.

Wha? I have a dedicated 300mbps router-Shield connection... fix this shit Nvidia.

I held the box for one of these today since Gamestop carries them. They had it permanently set at $249.99.

Was tempting, but having a 570 video card is holding me back.

I'm a bit behind on updates. Did I read this right? Does the shield do 60fps streaming now?

Guys we're getting Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed on Android tomorrow!

Yep. Just make sure you have a dual-band router.

I asked in another thread but how good is the dpad? Up to snuff for Capcom/SNK fighters or no?

DPad is solid, I can do Shoryuken motions fine in SF2.

Is there a way to force the streaming to work even if Nvidia doesn't consider your hardware shield ready? I have a GT760 and an A10 6800k, and Nvidia doesn't consider the CPU acceptable even though it should match the i3 minimum.
Edit: reading the Nvidia forums they say they disabled cpu white listing but I swear last time I looked my cpu was flagged as non-shield ready.

For fans of the games, I just now discovered ports of Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy with full controls. Very nice! Been playing Jedi Outcast for an hour now. It's on the Google Play Store.

I own this on PC, I own this on Vita, and lord help me I think I'm going to Triple Dip and get this for the Shield.

Took this advice, the same guy also ported Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Hexen II so I'm giving those a go too.

I'd skip it if you haven't already got it, the controls don't work and the display is inexplicably overscanned so you can't see the edges of the screen. Wait for a patch.

Has anyone successfully played the GOG DOSBox version of Ultima 7 Complete (natively, not streaming) on the Nvidia Shield? I know that DOSBox can be run on the Shield, but I've heard that some games work better than others. If I can have a fully functional Ultima 7 on the Shield, that will seal the deal for me.

Tempting... Will wait for $150 clearance sale. I love the idea, but the execution has been so-so.

After a bit of messing around and reconfiguring my network I've managed to get the Grid beta happening from central Florida. I'm actually pretty impressed, the high quality and low latency are a pleasant surprise to put it mildly. I've tried out Alan Wake and Darksiders II so far; Alan Wake was really good, Darksiders II wasn't as good. The more individual areas of the screen which are changing between frames makes a big difference, just as it generally does with any kind of video streaming system.

Both were more than playable, though. Hopefully the beta lasts long enough for me to play through Darksiders II, otherwise I'll have to wait until I move back to Australia to play it on my local network instead.
