Nvidia Shield Thread

Okay, a little update on my Streaming experience: The lag I was experiencing on Metro Last Light was caused by the game settings, no the streaming hardware, so i uncapped the framerate to 60fps and I gotta say that the performance is really good.

I tried Rage and RE6 and played for about an hour each. Both are games that run a perfect 60fps locked on the highest settings on my rig and I'm glad to report that the Shield managed to keep up with the framerate. However, i can't say the same about the IQ, the colors look washed out and full of artifacts when the action heats up. Still, very playable and enjoyable, I will continue to play both games on the Shield.

Wait what???

Googling it now, but if you can link to it, it would be better :)

Found link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.beloko.jk2

This is amazing!

Bought a shield it should be arriving today and this the first thing I will pop in it along with the gta's, god damn I hate the appstores and how impossible it is to find anything among the shit pile unless you read it in a forum by chance. Any other hidden gems like this?

About mine, I must admit that I'm now using the "30fps" option for streaming. The performance is great and honestly, I can't say that I noticed any difference between 30 and 60fps while playing.

Also, I usually use the Shield while in bed which is above my gaming PC but located at the other end of the house as opposed to the router so the wifi performance was average at best. I tried putting the router next to the PC just below my bedroom and it runs like butter.

Ok, I got another "better" router to put next to my modem so I have the "old" one that I configured as an access point and that I can enable at will to stream games on it.

I played about half of my playthrough of Remember Me on the Shield and I'm always amazed at how good it looks and runs.

... $200? Anyone?

Come on, someone buy this from this dude! 200$ is AWESOME for a (new) Shield!

Here's the stuff I've had fun with outside of streaming and emulation, all with full gamepad support:

Full native games

GTA3

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rockstar.gta3

Vice City

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rockstargames.gtavc

San Andreas

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rockstargames.gtasa

For the record these are all excellent ports and run and play flawlessly on the Shield. They added auto-saving and checkpoints too so it's far more appropriate for a portable game.

May Payne

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rockstar.maxpayne

As with the GTAs this plays, looks and runs fantastically on the Shield. It's still a bloody great game too.

Jet Set Radio

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sega.jetsetradio

The Dreamcast classic with full shield controls. Can be a little glitchy graphically but it plays well.

The Bard's Tale

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.inxile.BardTale

Fun and funny story-based ARPG. Surprisingly large and graphically polished.

The Conduit

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.highvoltage.theconduit

The infamous Wii FPS in all its b-grade glory. Looks and plays rather well all things considered but it is prone to crashing.

Smaller native games

Gunman Clive

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=beril.mootor.gmc

Released on a bunch of platforms and made by a GAF-er. It's a 3D side-scrolling platforming shoot-bang thing with a lovely hand-drawn aesthetic.

AVP: Evolution

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fde.avpevolution

3D brawler with very light RPG elements where you play as the Alien or Predator.

Bounty Arms

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kerosenegames.ba

Over the top 3D side-scrolling shooter thing

Hamilton's Great Adventure

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=se.fatshark.hamiltonthd

Pretty and straightforward puzzle game where you control a loot-loving adventurer and his parrot.

Heroes of Loot

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.orangepixel.dungeon

2D arena combat rogue-lite in realtime with a silly sense of humour.

Legends of Yore

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.newdawn.touchquest

2D roguelike which is mildly amusing and generally quite true to the genre.

Dynamite Jack

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.galcon.dynamitejack

Stealth puzzle game which is surprisingly deep.

God of Blades

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.whitewhalegames.godofblades

Really weird Norse running game with big swords.

Anodyne

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=air.Anodyne.mobile

Weirdly unsettling Zelda clone.

Also don't forget to check out the rest of the Beloko ports of idTech engines if you own the PC games already and want to play them portably with full controls:

Wolfenstein 3D: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.beloko.wolf3d
Doom: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.beloko.doom
Quake: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.beloko.quaketouch
Hexen 2: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.beloko.hexen2touch
Quake 2: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.beloko.quake2touch
Quake 3: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.beloko.quake3
Jedi Outcast: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.beloko.jk2
Jedi Academy: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.beloko.jk3
Return to Castle Wolfenstein: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.beloko.rtcw

There's a whole lot more that I've been playing than this list, but these games all have actual controller support and run well. Stuff like Stealth Bastard and Ravensword: Shadowlands are decent on the platform but you need to use the Gamepad Mapper to add physical controls to it, which isn't a big deal but I thought I'd stick to things which support physical controls by default.

My head is spinning, I cant believe all those ports of FPS, gonna be buying them all, time to fill the 32GB card I got.

Shield really is unparalleled when it comes to the amount of games that can be played.

All this stuff, emulation up to PS1, Game streaming, daaaaaaaaaaamn

When should we expect the announcement of the Shield 2.?
Hoping for a larger screen, slightly less bulky size, improve controls and Tegra K1 internals...

PS1 and beyond! I don't own a PSP so I can't test it out but PPSSPP has a port. Plus there's DS, Dreamcast and now even Dolphin for GameCube and Wii, though it's obviously got a long way to go.

That list is missing Ittle Dew.

Ooh I had no idea Ittle Dew had Shield support, definitely grabbing it now.

For some reason the d-pan controls have inverted up and down (which can be corrected in under one minute with button mapping). The games works perfectly with the analog stick, though. Oh, map and help are linked to the right and left stick presses respectively.

Anyway, a few new things I've been playing with the past few days with native controls:

Muffin Knight

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.angrymobgames.muffinknight

Weird arena platforming title where you collect muffins and kill critters. The twist is that each muffin you eat randomly changes you into a different character with different abilities, and you earn XP which you can use to upgrade those characters.

Neon Shadow

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.crescentmoongames.neonshadow

Colourful old-style FPS about a guy who kills robots and doesn't afraid of anything. Only really good for short sessions though, I think I'd rather just play Doom.

Double Dragon Trilogy

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dotemu.ddtrilogy

Straight ports of the three Double Dragon games. If you've played them, you know what to expect.

Heretic GLES

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kokak.HereticGLES&hl=en-GB

A port of Heretic for Android. I initially ignored this and Doom GLES because they use user made MD2 models instead of sprites and have a bunch of gaudy effects and mouselook. However, upon trying it out I found that you can disable all of those options at startup and just play some Heretic!

===

Now a bonus non-native game which can be configured with Gamepad Mapper nicely:

Dungeon Quest

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.shinybox.smash

Addictive and nicely visually stylised dungeon-crawler with a surprisingly complex loot system. You can play for free which is good since I don't think it's totally ready for primetime at this point. Ignore the in-game controller configuration, it doesn't support the Shield controls yet, and make sure you turn off auto-aim because it's too easy with it on.

Does the same applies to Doom GLES?

BTW, on the Topic of games that play good with Gamepad Mapper, the Rayman games play very good after a simple configuring.

No. NO.

Keep it full controller sized. Shield is the most comfortable handheld ever thanks to the Xbox Controller shape and grips. I can play for hours and hours without getting hand cramps like Vita or DS/3ds I want it to stay like that.

comfort while playing games >>>>> device look

I have not used the Shield but I think the 'form factor' seems perfect. I would love it if the PS Vita or next Nintendo handheld was like it; a comfortable game controller with a screen. I enjoy my 3DS XL because of the games but the actual device is far, far from comfortable to use.

Yea. It baffles me when I see claim that the Shield is too big. That's its main selling point for me. It's big because it's a fullsize controller. If you take that away, you compromise what makes the Shield appealing in the first place.

Only thing I can ask for in a future possible iteration, is a better dpad, and slightly rework the grips so that they're as comfy as the xbone and ps4 controllers.

It doesn't load for me on my Shield, I don't know if anybody has any solution, but so far have not been able to play it.

This is because the controller support is actually a lie. If you select touch control you can get it to load, then use Gamepad Mapper to play it. It seems like it could be fun, it's basically an Oblivion clone complete with janky feeling controls and inconsequential dialogue trees.

I did select no, then go to select new game and it freezes on the loading screen after that.

Do you have it installed on your Shield or the SD card?

I moved it to my SD card and I am wondering if that caused any issues.

I will try to reinstall it.

Actually I removed it to make room for other games last week, but before that it always failed when I tried to move it to the SD card anyway for some reason. Not sure if it matters, but I'm running the Humble Bundle version not the Play Store version.

Reinstalled it, ran it off the Shield and it worked. So then I moved it to the SD card and it still worked.

Will play it a bit more later.

Playstore version here.

I spoke too soon, I was able to play the small tutorial in the beginning, but on the next loading screen it froze again.

I believe it has to do with it being on my SD card, but I don't have anything I would delete for it on the Shield itself.

Whoaaa I had no idea about the jedi knight engine ports. I've been wanting to stream them through steam, but it seemed like a hassle to get controller support.

How is it playing the games with a controller?

Make sure you try out the "Grid". It is free and it allows the Shield to stream games from the cloud. So far it is awesome most of the time. I played and beat Alan Wake a New Nightmare(or something like that) and am currently playing The Witcher 2 which is just an awesome game.

The only issue besides lag once in a awhile is that the font is very small to read on screen.

Took the plunge and ordered a Shield over the weekend. Really excited for this, the one-two combo of streaming and being a god tier emulation machine is just insane.

It's surprisingly comfortable, though I'd suggest turning the difficulty down one notch lower than you normally would have it. The pre-lightsaber parts of the game are a little tough when you can't easily headshot those stormies.

yeah. but not two..they are three things really
1- Best emulator machine ever (full controller layout/powerful and run almost everything/comfortable to play for hours)
2- PC gaming on bed@60fps
3- Android games are finally playable (controller option/ mappers for the touch only games)

for $250 more people need to get this (and Nvidia need to sell it outside of the US)

True. While I use an Android phone I was never impressed with "Android games" or emulators for that matter, because of the touch screen controls. So apart from stuff like Quell and Osmos HD I stopped paying attention to what's been released. I do know about GTA San Andreas, however. That will be my first purchase when the Shield arrives!

EDIT: of course I do want to check out what's been released in the last few years on the Android front. I bet there's some cool titles.

I've spent most of my weekend doing banderas.gif playing borderlands 2 in bed at 60fps, god damn I'm impressed.

All games I tried (bioshock 2, tomb raider, dead space3) look good, they have artifacts that make them look like a youtube video but they are so so playable and 2d games almost look native on the screen, I tried the first levels of supermeat boy and didn't have trouble with the lag. Can't wait to try dust and rogue legacy.

Controller is amazing and fixes the issues I had with the 360 pad (dpad, atrocious bumpers and the round face buttons) I wish I could use it on my pc wirelessly.
My only complaints so far:
-Too damn heavy, I need to rest it on something for long sessions
-Clickable sticks are too resistant and noisy
-Screen could be bigger there's a lot of wasted space

So I'm really happy with my purchase, glad to eat crow for doubting it when it was announced.

I wish I could use it on my pc wirelessly.

Is that not what you're effectively doing? Can't you just look at your monitor instead of at the shield? Actually I do see your point. There's a restricted amount of content you can actually use the PC streaming with, which is tedious.

I didn't think of that! But doesn't it sets the monitor at the same resolution as the shield (720p)?

There was an update to it recently where it is now able to stream at 1080p / 60fps to the shield, so if that is your monitors setup, I don't think it will be affected.

when streaming wireless mine always makes my icons on my monitor change places, I presume because it changes to 720?

anyone else get that?

Best emulator machine ever (full controller layout/powerful and run almost everything/comfortable to play for hours)

How well does the Shield work with DOSBox? I've heard conflicting reports about how well DOSBox games run/play on the Shield.

The description page for DOSBox Turbo (available on the Google Play store) specifically states that it features "Full analog controller support (mouse and joystick emulation)" which, of course, should alleviate any mouse concerns, but I keep seeing people say "the mouse is too slow" or "the mouse doesn't work" etc.

I need to know exactly how well DOSBox and mouse-driven games work on the Shield, especially Ultima 7. If I buy a Shield, it will be primarily to run DOSBox on it, and I have this glorious vision in my mind that I'll be able to use an analog stick to control the mouse and left/right click with the bumpers/triggers/buttons, but everything I read makes me question if I can actually do this, or at least do this easily.

If the Shield really is the best emulation machine ever, this shouldn't be so complicated.

Question: is anyone else's Shield screen slightly off-white or 'warm' looking? I was playing some Skyrim and noticed the snow is slightly yellowish compared to my monitor. Its the same whether in game or on all white backgrounds like Google's homepage. I've got the brightness cranked to max as well.

It reminds me of the tint on the 3DS XLs screen. Is it just mine or is this the way the Shield's LCD is?

Two more Shield compatible things:

Record of Agarest War

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hyperdevbox.agarestwar

JSRPG which has been on PS360, PC and now Android. Gameplay seems like it has legs about an hour in.

Quadropus Rampage

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bscotch.quadropus

Brawler rogue-lite with randomly generated maps and weapons. Nice to look at and fun to play. You have to enable the controller in the options, and make sure you don't have automated profile downloads happening on the Gamepad Mapper or things will get sticky.

Does the same applies to Doom GLES?

Confirmed this by the way, works like a charm!
