NX will launch in March 2017 globally, won't be at E3 (focusing on Zelda instead)

New Year is a huge sales period in Japan, with the closest match in retail activity being Golden Week. So for Sony and Nintendo, March is the natural 2nd choice for a launch outside of the winter holiday period, 1 month prior to Golden Week.

Centering your console launch date around a country that doesn't really buy consoles in large numbers anymore is a bad idea.

But that demographic is way more likely to buy something like a new console during the holydays than in March.

If that's who they are going for they shouldn't underestimate the "oh this is new, I could get it as a present for the kids/family for Christmas" mentality

Wii U launched during the holiday period
3DS launched in March

Wii U sold 10m+ units
3DS sold 50m+ units

Also the dev cycles are aligned perfectly for a repeat of 3DS' first year killer apps. The only problem was the $250 pricetag but I think without any competition from Sony they can go low end on the handheld and thus lower the price.

I've been saying for like a good couple of years now that E3 needs to do more to adapt to the current state of this because they keep losing people, and this time losing major companies. While there's always talk of social media trends, it doesn't increase views or money as I know plenty of people who have no idea what E3 is but knows what Nintendo, Playstation and Microsoft are. They're not interested in long winded talks from conferences, they just want to hear about a thing and move on.

E3 is barely an experience for anyone at home as it's originally a tradeshow and it hasn't changed much in years and sticks with much of the same crowd of viewers.

I mean, outside of one or two announcements, the majority of most E3 conferences are absolute garbage. Just look at Pele or Aisha Tyler's "life-sized meme" from last year.

Personally I watch E3 mostly to laugh at how terrible it is...

That has even less chance of happening though. It's a fools errand and just speaks to how fucked Nintendo are long term, tbqh.

I honestly feel it has a better chance of happening than getting dedicated PS4 owners to suddenly pay attention to Nintendo.

A 2017 launch was always extremely likely but anyone even suggesting it got buried with snarky posts from fans in the NX thread.

2016 was never real

Yeah, I remember being completely ignored when trying to express my views on this.

It just never made sense to be so sure of 2016 for no good reason. I had friends stating "with absolute, 100% certainty" that it was 2016. Glad I screenshotted those conversations now ... :)

Been thinking this was the case ever since we first knew of the NX.

2017 to build up the library after their in-house studios have recently come off of games on Wii U.

What a disastrous year for Nintendo fans.

It's been a disastrous generation.
Not only that, you have a huge amount of good will lost with frankly half-assed games this gen, and entire major franchises just disappearing for this entire generation and then you got that huge slap in the face "spinoff" crap at last years E3. Like after Other M, the worst thing that has ever happened since the black plague, they decide "Oh we will get Metroid fans back with METROID PRIME...... soccer" Great going Nintendo. Clap Clap.

This entire generation has just been mediocre games, letdowns and broken promises. Thank god I only borrowed my friends Wii U that was collecting dust, didn't actually drop money on one. The Wii U is worse than the Dreamcast, and I say that with a straight face.

The NX not being at E3 doesn't bode well, screams something has gone wrong with the console. We are now 11 months out from the NX release and we don't even know what the NX is.

What happened to Nintendo in 2006? With their expertly crafted hype train that went over several years? Nintendo have lost grip with reality.

As far as early-year launches:

8-bit Nintendo Famicom console launch in Japan: June 1983.

PlayStation 2 Japanese launch: March 2000

Just a few off the top 'o my head.

Yea. Unsure of all the negativity in here. But this is the internet, and many like to act like they know-it-all. Going by the posts here, The NX is doomed.

I'm better off staying away from this depressing thread. I'll go play awesome games until NX's release and buy it then. Done.

so a few scenarios i'm thinking happened:

1. oh god panic everywhere nothing's ready. mario's not ready. retro's new sleep training device isn't ready. somehow zelda's not ready either. the nx launch was just going to be lego tales of minecraft and a splatoon update that included all dlc. so they're rushing projects to meet march and they're pushing the hardware back to meet those projects. (see also: 3ds launch)

2. spend money smarter. maybe with ps vr this holiday and some things nintendo's aware are happening in late 2016, they decided to vacate the premises and focus on an even better launch than what they were planning. with their marketing dollars out of 2016, they can buy less expensive ad space in america, and they can focus better on a worldwide launch when that wasn't happening before. maybe a handheld component is happening at the same time, or set for november, and having launches closer or at the same time will benefit the handheld form factor better.

3. shit happened and a delay happened out of their hands concerning the manufacturing of some of the parts for nx. so there really isn't going to be anything ready for e3 because they can't get the special tech working or even approximated in time. november would be a gamble, but march is a sure thing as far as those components are concerned, so the system is pushed back to that date to at least guarantee there aren't shortages or other issues on release.

kinda going with #1 myself, but that's after knowing what happened with wii u.

I have a 4:

Nintendo knows the first impression of the system needs to generate hype. E3 is too far from when the product will actually released, so they choose to not show to acctually unveil it with a BANG! A few months further down the line.

They cannot have a confusing or underwhelming reveal. They need time to show their cards in the absolute best light.

I don't get this. They need to have a huge presence at E3. They need to show off NX. Thos is the big press event of the year for the industry. Maybe Nintendo hasn't noticed but the press stops talking about video games after that week.

All this being said? I was correct in thinking March 2017.

A few people I know owe me money.

Very disappointed!

2017?
No NX news at E3?

LOL Nintendo

It's good you don't read supplementary info for the context of what's happening. It assures me that the mass market will be just as trigger happy as you are in voicing their opinion on it.

The not at E3 news is more surprising. I suspect things aren't going exactly to plan if they aren't ready to show by then for a product coming out in 10 months later.

I get that third parties likely wouldn't be ready if they haven't received dev kits until recently (or at all?), but this implies Nintendo isn't ready either.

This is my take too. Even if their central idea for the NX is totally revolutionary and a complete paradigm shift for the business debuting it at E3 still wouldn't leave anyone but the grey market Chinese manufacturers time to copy the idea with some shitty knock off.

This feels a little strange to me unless Nintendo don't want to get caught up in a graphics 'arms race' with the PS4 Neo possibly debuting at E3 (providing that the NX, like the Wii, isn't as powerful as either of its rivals) but even then they aren't directly competing with Sony or MS anymore so that's the problem.

This isn't what I wanted to hear, but I did start thinking there wasn't enough evidence of a holiday release at a point. They had been awfully quiet.

Their E3 sounds like it'll be piss poor outside of Zelda, though. Hmm. Well, good we've got a heads-up now.

What?? Calm your tits fgs. The WiiU has great games. I play on my WiiU more than both the PS4 and Xbone. So there you go. Quality over quantity any day.

Talking of OTT reactions. This thread man. Sheesh. I'm seriously out of here. Bunch of cry-babies. What's funny is come March 2017 all of you downers will go crawling buying the NX like drug addicts.

I know that hardware you have to sit on for 5-10 years needs to be as perfect as possible and that after the huge Wii U fiasco they will left nothing for chance, but yeah: this is kinda frustrating, especially since I expected this NX thing to be shown at E3 2016.

Is it a good thing that in that huge timeframe of almost a year both the NX console and its games will get more polished? Probably.

But damn if this news isn't still disappointing.

Nintendo stuff make up a significant portion of my games diet, so this is pretty disappointing. I really really REEEEALLY hope that Sony and MS have something to show other than a bunch of new arena shooters that are trying to be the MOBA of FPS this year.

...Maybe I should take up a new hobby. I wonder if there are any adult volleyball leagues around here...

Hey if people can claim a conference won because of games being announced 2-3 years before release maybe one game coming out next year can win e3?

If they at least would lower the price of WiiU I could buy the system again to play some Nintendo games until next year. But no, it's still more expensive than Ps4 and Xbone. Lmao, I'm starting to hate Nintendo. They must be out of their minds.
Horrible, absolutely horrible.

NX was officially slated for 2016 right? Or was that always just the common assumption? They've already put the Wii U basically on life support, and now they want to stretch that out for another year? Something had to have happened with production, this seems crazy. Crazy that we won't even get any details until maybe the end of the year? I can't imagine they could be retooling the hardware at this point in the design process.

That is horseshit. Because YOU dont ever notice video game articles in USA today outside of e3, doesn't mean the industry isn't reported on outside of it.

And true market awareness doesn't really start until the marketing campaign starts anyway. Let's all look forward to NX mall tours in January people!

Don't post if it is to spread false information. It was a 2016 release until today.

It was posted a good while after Nintendo announced Zelda was delayed into 2017. There's nothing cool about going "OMG, Nintendo actually have it listed as 2017. LOL, LOL, LOL. Are they fucking serious? XD"

What happened to Nintendo in 2006? With their expertly crafted hype train that went over several years? Nintendo have lost grip with reality.

They're just in an awkward position. They haven't made a console geared toward core gamers since the Gamecube. That market is now heavily tilted toward Sony and MS. The casual market they they managed to appeal to with the Wii has moved on to phones and tablets. So they're looking at an uphill battle no matter which direction they choose to go in. But by now they hopefully know that they need to go all in with whatever direction they choose. The Wii U was fucked from day one because they were trying to appeal to both of those sets of gamers and neither ended up wanting it.

I hear ya.

I need to quit reading GAF and play more of the first NA-released arcade perfect home port of Sega's Power Drift, on Nintendo 3DS (my New 3DS XL).

Think about NX another day.

This is most likely, since with the other ones, you would still show it at E3, this is the only reason they won't show the NX or more importantly, it's games, at E3.

But there is even a more pessimistic one.

4: The gimmick doesn't make sense and they are struggling with how to show this off or implement it into games.

In a better world, I would think this one is far fetched, but then the Wii U happened. Nintendo had no clue on how to use the Wii U gamepad, it existed for gimmick sake. Even with Star Fox 0, they still don't know how to use it.

I would not be surprised if they've made another gimmicky console, but once they got in game development, it didn't actually function like expected.

You weren't arguing structural problems, you were arguing an inability to manage. And I'm sorry, but if you think that a ship keeps sailing without issue when the captain disappears without an appointed first mate, I don't know what to tell you.

Nintendo has other directors on its board; it has other key management personnel intact, who were all familiar with Iwata's vision, presumably. Iwata's death isn't an excuse.

Nothing you say can erase this fact.

Assumption based on trend of the GC, Wii, and Wii U launches.

Why are you depressed? I don't get it. The NX is coming, It's only 3 months later than expected. I honestly don't get how that is depressing? 3 months are nothing. Good time to even save up more money.

I hope we get some sort of tech leaks before then.
3 months after everyone has spent their money at Christmas and a month before taxes are due. I'm sure parents will be lining up for the NX in March.

Man, that is a bad date.

- They miss a holiday season. Rest of 2016 looks bad for Wii U. Unless Zelda makes it out. (Edit: NVM, Zelda in 2017)
- They give Sony the holidays on a silver platter. All eyes on Sony, PS4 and PSVR.
- If Sony wanted to, they can hold back the PS4 Neo and launch directly against the NX for another beatdown. Especially if they are confident in its power.
- If this thing is underpowered, it won't be a good look.

Oh well.

Goddamn. Nintendo and MS just basically gave this generation to Sony on a silver platter.

This gen is Sony's no matter what Nintendo or MS would do at this point, they are fighting for second place and it was known before we got those new details on the NX.

Centering your console launch date around a country that doesn't really buy consoles in large numbers anymore is a bad idea.

If the rumours are to be believed about PS4K, Sony clearly didn't get that memo either, but that's neither here nor there.

If it's not going to be ready for the holiday selling period, you can't just magically make it ready. And clearly, none of the upcoming consoles are operating under what is considered "conventional wisdom" of the industry, so...

Yeah, I think we're all just suffering from the aftershock more than anything.

Kind of relieved I don't have to buy an NX this year! Happy to wait, too many games to play through and will use the money on a PS VR instead (and PS4k if it comes out this year...). Got plenty of WiiU games to get through this year.

I would not at all be surprised if the console didn't make March next year, FWIW. A March release date screams trying as hard as possible to get it out next financial year, and I reckon there's a good chance that it doesn't make it.
