As someone who's just jumping in here...

Isn't the implication that he was told that it was coming from an official source (from a foreign government), and that wasn't flagged or reported to relevant authorities, a legal issue in itself?
Yes. That is a federal crime. Solicitation from a federal government.

I agree.

Personally I think posting fake tweets in these threads should be ban worthy.

I'm tempted to block everyone posting them.

Seconded.

I posted it because it was a diverging opinion on the legal ramifications of the event. Right now, it seems everyone who hates Trump seem to think that this will bring him down. This guy had a different legal view on it so I thought it might be interesting to discuss it.

There are plenty of diverging opinions from sites that aren't blatantly fake news.

The constitution is a fatally flawed document so you will never have any laws that would protect against this shit. One side would clearly stick to the fake news narrative so they have no incentive to elevate the level of discourse because they need their poorly educated base to stay dumb.

I fundamentally agree with the first part here. Having "the oldest constitution in the world" isn't a badge of honor, it's a cause of countless legal problems. But there are still roads that could be taken to make it easier to persecute and fine news outlets for making obvious false or misleading reports.

I can't fault you for your optimism here. It can be done over time but it will take a long time.

I feel like I'm in a weird position sometimes just in that I recognize that these kinds of stories absolutely are a big deal and help to build the case against Trump, but also recognize that this is a slow, arduous process that won't yield the desired results quickly, and may never pay off completely.
The majority of us are aware that it's a slow process (although yes, some think he will somehow be magically impeached in an instant).

But this development is absolutely massively significant in it's implications for the ongoing Mueller investigation. This is a huge deal. The reaction is absolutely warranted. What is happening is unprecedented.

I think many people dismiss these things out of hand by saying "this isn't THE story to end it all" but in reality, we aren't going to know that until we have the benefit of hindsight.

Many people said that the Comey firing was "nothing important", and one week later were saying "SEE, he's still President". But at the same time can you really honestly say that today?

Can anyone really honestly say that about the Comey Memos?

In hindsight both of those moments are important turning points in public opinion and the investigation in general, and are certainly NOT "nothing".

This is likely to be similar.

Yes Donald Trump is likely to still be President in a month, but to say that these moments resulted in nothing are not really accurate either.

Not nothing - they've driven down his approval rating by ... three points? Or so?

But otherwise, yes it's been nothing so far. Maybe it will be something eventually. More likely the best result is it depresses Republican turnout in 2018 and the Democrats regain the house.

There may come an outrage or admission or piece of evidence that finally makes congress flip on him and try to move on but this is frog boiling.

The specific temperature at which the frog is doomed will be invisible and unnoticed but the frog's fate has been sealed by the initial and ultimate conditions.

This frog is in a deep pot of its own making and the heat can only go up.

There is an ongoing, wide spreading, independent investigation into Trump's team. Stuff like this works into their case. Just because there's no immediate action does not mean it's nothing.

Steve isn't saying this is nothing, to be fair.

But I still think the firing of Comey (and the manner) will turn to have been the fatal mistake that set everything in motion.

I'd say that's the "proper" position for a complicated situation like this one.

I want Trump to lick the boot of Lady Liberty as much as anyone, but these things take time.

That's kinda the point. Even if the Russian lawyer didn't give them a damn thing, the fact is they were interested in what she COULD have and acted on it.

Yep their defense is we got nothing but that really doesn't matter because their intent was clear.

Even after it switched to "adoption" talk Jr. at his own admission basically said we understand your concerns but Dad is an unelected civilian. Be better discussed if/when he is president.

They drove the point home. We want your info. We cant help you if he is unelected

The sad thing is that even if/when he is impeached he will have done irreversible damage to the US standing abroad and people's faith in the presidency which will have achieved Russian goals. I wouldn't be shocked if Putin decides to release all their OPPO on Trump randomly in the next year

Lol, I know this slowly burned Gowdy's soul as he signed this.

There is definitely something rider or something to go after Hillary per the tweets. In fact, I'll bet money they will be talked about on record potentially getting an investigation on that out of this which the Republicans will doggedly pursue in lieu of Trump/Russia.

I don't buy it. The only way to record that meeting was to either have Trump Tower bugged or have the Russian lawyer bugged, and neither seem even remotely plausible.

The IC caught Flynn because his conversation took place with a Russian over a phone line that was bugged. We don't have that here.

On the other hand I bet the Russians have recordings of these conversations.

The burden of maturity and education. IMO this is the only option available.

Yeah it's not like the Comey firing got a special counsel appointed or anything.

Honestly I would not be surprised if Trump Tower was tapped.

Trump has allowed numerous criminal groups etc. operate out of the building. Some of those groups have been brought down by the FBI etc.

We know they tapped a meeting there. The Russian mafia thing. I forget the exact details of it. There was a meeting at Trump tower and it was tapped. No Trump peoples were in the meeting though if I remember right.

I don't think that's an uncommon view here.

Yeah, people jokingly say shit like "He's done for!", but it's pretty clear that this is an ongoing process with some pretty big political obstacles.

3 points or so? His approval has tanked since he took office. I'm not sure how you see Flynn resigning, Sessions recusing, Flynn and Manafort retroactively registering as foreign agents, a special prosecutor being appointed, etc as "nothing." A special prosecutor alone is a huge fucking deal.

Anyone saying "nothing has happened, nothing will happen" is suffering from immediate gratification symptoms. Sorry real life isn't a season of HoC that you can binge watch.

Right. It's pretty much me.

Perhaps my initial 'HOLY SHIT' reactions to this sort of news get seen by some people as if I think it's going to lead to Trump being kicked out of office by the end of the week, but I don't.

It's more from a perspective of, you know, however exciting and earth shattering we want a revelation to be, on a scale of normal or realistic, this is on the 'HOLY SHIT' side of that scale.

Trump Jr confirmed the e-mail chain himself.

An e-mail chain. That could have been easily spoofed.

Instead, he confirmed every word of it.

And the text clearly shows an intent to get Russian government acquired intel that is damaging to Clinton.

And he just shared it.

So yeah, even if Trump is still in office a year from now, and no charges have been brought against Trump Jr, that's still a holy shit moment.
