Obama: "Trayvon Martin could have been me."

if Cable News nut jobs can yap all day randomly without being objective about the news and just peddling punditry

then yeah, Obama can say what ever he wants IMO

back in my day during Network Evening News days, news anchors told the news objectively.

Today, it's Cable crap, pundit crap. Crossfire left vs right crap (fake left by the way because the left does not exist in the US) crap crap

so, if these Cable News channels can spew garbage 24h a day, then let the Prez voice his opinion once in a while. That would be fair

For someone in a position of political authority like the POTUS to comment publicly before a trial has begun or all the facts have come to light is socially irresponsible imo. It doesn't matter whether or not you agree with his assessment, he was basically robbing Zimmerman of his constitutionally guaranteed right to a fair trial.

robbing him of a fair trial? He got acquitted.

He didn't even say whether the man was in the wrong, just that he empathized with the family.

@Mr_Antimatter

One, because it's insencere.
Two, there's plenty of footage on Youtube highliting Rev. Wright's racist rants...

The racism and obvious racist dog-whistling that has been allowed in the public discourse since '08 is sickening. What's annoying is Obama has enough fuck ups to attack him on but it always stoops to z0mg our president is an nword.. The last 5yrs have been utterly embarrassing for America.

I think it's been illuminating. I was shocked how many pieces of crap crawled out of their holes after his victory. For them it was never Obama as a man and disagreeing with him on certain issues some that he should be called out on, but because he was a 'nigger' for some people that's all it came down to.

That's a damn sad sight for America.

Black president provides empathy in relating black experiences. Gets bitched at.

What the fuck man. He didnt say anything negative about the verdict. Just provided examples of why this particular case stirs emotions for black people, and provided possible deeper discussions for the future that examines current laws. Are people upset because he is reminding them he is black? Cuz, you know, he's still black

So Obama was flipping off cameras? Instead of getting his Harvard degree he was doing work? He is not the same, not even by a long shot.

Even if you're a black male who presents himself in a 100% positive light people still treat you like a suspect quite often.

Watched what he said just now and I didn't see anything wrong with what he said. He was honest, sincere and nothing he said was wrong. The man had some thoughts on the whole matter and he was going to be asked what they were, he basically said them.

Nothing wrong with that.

Don't get me wrong. The judicial system is far from unimpeachable, and there is certainly corruption or institutional shortcomings that need to be addressed. That's very different than the POTUS commenting on a specific criminal case. Personally I think this is cynical political opportunism thinly veiled as empathy, and the White House is happy to steer attention towards something that's a relative triviality next to stuff like the NSA leaks or plans to invade Syria. Considering the policies of his administration on interrogation, drone strikes, extraordinary rendition, national security etc. I'm prone to extreme skepticism about Obama's moral compass. What happened to Trayvon is unfortunate, but not as galling or insidious as the systematic abuse of authority Obama has helped codify, and his comments ring hollow imo.
So why didn't you just say this instead of obfuscating us with manufactured outrage about the president having the gall to provide America with some perspective as to what it's like being black in America, and why these kinds of cases illicit the responses they do?

Obama is not even in the same league. How does a person even become president? He is so wrong to equate himself to Trayvon.
The fuck are you talking about?

Obama is not even in the same league. How does a person even become president? He is so wrong to equate himself to Trayvon.

He overcame all the bullshit.

That's how he became president.

That's the issue, he had to overcome all this shit just to have a chance.

Think about that.

Jesus, even in this thread the various "Trayvon's death would have been a 'bigger issue' if he wasn't a delinquent/could have been somebody/was the kind of person I 'approve' of" is disgusting.

LoL! You just don't get it bro.

The point is that Trayvon never got the chance to possibly become president. Yeah, that little thug wanna-be could have grown up to be anything he wanted to. Except he won't because he's dead. Obama could have been Trayvon Martin. All it would have taken would be for a 17 year old Obama to be walking through a Florida neighborhood at night with some skittles and tea being followed by an overzealous vigilante with a gun.

So Obama was flipping off cameras? Instead of getting his Harvard degree he was doing work? He is not the same, not even by a long shot.

?

Have you ever flipped off a camera? Or pretended to grab a friend's crotch while taking a picture? Or something equally silly?

By this logic every frat boy in the US deserves to die.

Maybe he was, maybe he wasn't. I do know if he was a dope smoker, just like Martin, and if the wrong person saw him doing so, Harvard might not have happened, and the Presidency definitely wouldn't have. You'd consider him a thug just like Martin. Obama was just better at committing his crimes.

Obama, like most of us, prolly made some silly choices @ 17, none that would have ok to kill him over.

Obama (allegedly) smoked weed in his youth too, the same thing that the media is using to victim blame TM.

Like others have said, when GZ decided to pursue TM that night, he had no idea who he was.

That is where the comparison comes in.

What if he was a aspiring Ivy League scholar? To GZ he was put into a box of being one of "those assholes that always get away".

Yeah man.

Obama couldn't just be the first Black (and White) President, he had to be a Harvard Law Professor, extremely non threatening and charismatic as all hell just to get in.

He had to tailor his campaign to ignore race (and discussing it) so that he didn't come off as the "black candidate" and essentially make the White people of America comfortable voting for him.

In other words, he had to be a near perfect pitch to get the job.

George Bush just needed a C average in college and be viewed as a guy "you could have a beer with" to get in.

And yet, there are still people who challenged Obama's degree and made up rumors that he got bad grades.

Fuck, are you alive?

Did you not notice they Obama rarely touched on race relations?

Whenever al sharpton was clamoring for him to be "blacker" that he was?

Fuck. Examine yourself.
