Obi-Wan Kenobi |OT| Hello there…

Watch the scene again. Vader sees how the droid is helping Obi-Wan.

In his arrogance, he then wants to take the chance to grab Obi-Wan AND his helpers. Why be satisfied with just one piece of cake when you can have the whole thing? Apart from that, Vader did the same thing in Rebels when he let the Ghost Crew escape and even in the OT Vader let his enemies escape once or twice. So that is just Anakins/Vader's typical behaviour again.
Why would Vader have ordered his Storm Troopers to capture Obi-Wan if he did want him to get away ultimately? 👀

Episode 3 :
That was ….something. I’m guessing they wrote Vader like that to be disappointed with the level of Challenge Kenobi presented. Spending all those years tormenting himself on what went wrong and what he would’ve done differently for the victory.
Finally, gets his chance and Kenobi can barely sustain a few lightsaber clashes. Let’s him go to prolong the suffering. 🤷🏻‍♂️
Thing I’m wondering is now that they’ve established Kenobi’s connection to the girl how the hell are they gonna ignore her and her home planet up until A New Hope? If Kenobi escapes and gets Leia home, would Vader and the gang just go right back to her? There would be no hiding this time. Oh well, maybe they’ll explain it by the end.

I thought ep3 was great, but I didn't buy the escape at the end. The cliffhanger was also a little deflating - just when I think the plot is moving forward and we're ready to start towards the climax we're reset right back to where we were midway through episode 2.

I knew Vader was going to show up when Obi-Wan saw the apparition of Anakin. I had my 3-D headphones on, the score became nothing but an ominous rumble, the same tenor as the sound when Vader starts to use the Force only cranked up and drawn out. Then we see how hateful Anakin's expression was towards Obi-Wan. I knew then that Vader had actually found him through the Force and was already on his way - almost there in fact.

I was not expecting them go with this rageful, still immensely pissed at everyone, primetime murderous Vader. They really are writing him, and Christiansen is portraying him, like the monster he is in the canon comics.

And shockingly the actress playing Reva wasn't bad this episode outside of her holographic discussion. I can almost feel that the director and her had a sit down at some point during the filming of the series for a recalibration. I also think some people's guesses here regarding her history and motivations may be correct.

I saw a couple of German dubbed movies with Arnord Schwarzenegger on RTL + way back in the day and those were usually bad compared to the original English versions so I assumed that was what the typical German dub was. :messenger_winking_tongue:

Hang on, the Austrian Oak didn't do his own german dubs?

For some reason this makes me sad....Now I want to hear "kommen Sie zum Chopper" or "Ich komme wieder"!

Half the fun with Arnold is the broken English with heavy German accent. How do you do that in German dub?

About her being a foundling and trying to undermine the Empire from within? Might be interesting assuming she hasn't been murdering her fellow classmates, any other non-conforming force sensitive, and who knows how many rando civvies in her quest. I've a hard time thinking anyone can rise within the Inquisitor ranks with doing that "can't have an omlet without breaking some eggs" thing.

Maybe he sounds really educated and posh in German?

"Conan, what is best in life?"

In German "Golly good question, my lad. What is best in life is to soundly trounce your foes, force them to depart your company at a brisk pace, and endure the wailing of the ladyfolk whilst sipping tea."

That was before he noticed that there were other people helping him.
That seems a bit out of character of Vader's IMO(too much hubris), that he 100% knows he'll meet Obi-Wan again soon(ish?) after a decade of hunting him. Remember, Vader should be full of rage because he blames Obi-Wan for everything, including Padmé's death, so letting him go to catch some more rebels is questionable IMO. He could've tortured that info out of Obi-Wan or extracted that info from the droid. We saw his force power extend beyond the flames area.

He don't ever see him tell the troopers to stand down either.

Arnold comes from a specific part in Austria and has a heavy German accent contributed to this part of the country. So he does not speak „clear“ German. It would have been very weird for him to do his own dub as his German would sound much different than everyone elses.

I find that exactly this behaviour absolutely fits his character. Even when he was Anakin, his character was one of arrogance. In Episode III, you saw that arrogance in the famous high ground scene. It is no different here now.

Now that Kenobi has been startled Vader knows very well that he will definitely see Kenobi again. Vader himself does not know that Kenobi is only saving Leia and that he was not looking for a confrontation in that respect. Vader, on the other hand, presumably now assumes that Kenobi will voluntarily seek him out anyway in order to bring him back to the light side. Vader definitely made him feel guilty.

He could've tortured that info out of Obi-Wan or extracted that info from the droid. We saw his force power extend beyond the flames area.

I think he knows that Obi-Wan would not say anything. Especially since he could not even say much in that case.

He don't ever see him tell the troopers to stand down either.

Yes, this is in fact true. On the other hand, he did not remind the stormtroopers of the order after the fire broke out again and Kenobi was carried away. The german dub also seems to have some extra info here. At the end, the fourth sister tells the fifth brother that "he has escaped" and "they should look for his helpers". That sounds much more precise to me than in the English version. There it only says that he had help and that they should search the planet. But since the translators often get a bit more information about the context, I really assume that the German version is more to the point here.

I question the direction of this show… just the Vader vs Kenobi fight…. That whole wall of fire and how Vader couldn’t get around it to get Kenobi and how that whole bit was filmed was idiotic…

Vader hasn’t seen Kenobi in 10 years and he can’t be bothered to go around the fire to make sure he doesn’t get away… it just makes the show seem like a fan made production

But now he's suffered severe burnings all over his body and still suffers it without his suit(or bacta tank). He's had to relearn a lot of things because Obi-Wan left him there burning. And no doubt his Sith training would've fuelled his hatred towards Obi-Wan all this time too. Getting back at Obi-Wan would seem a personal matter that would take precedence over an Imperial security one like he treats it here(assuming it is the plan to lure out more rebels to capture later on with Kenobi and he wasn't suffering from PTSD looking at the fire). This toying with his prey behaviour still seems out of character IMO from what I've seen of Vader so far but granted, I've not seen all canonical material.

Edit: I agree with you Vader would not immediately kill Obi-Wan but let him suffer a bit first thus he's playing with his prey in that sense, it's the letting Obi-Wan escape so he could torture him some more in the future that I find hard to buy.

Vader won't find out about Leia till ROTJ unless this show retcons it.
I think he knows himself that Obi-Wan would not say anything. Especially since he could not even say much in that case.
He wouldn't need Obi-Wan to talk when he's got people like Reva in his service. I assume Vader knows about those kinds of abilities of his Inquisitors.

This show looks so cheap. And why aren't they using the classic star wars themes? Not even a hint of the imperial march when Vader showed up? The soundtrack is so generic.
And Leia's message in A New Hope makes no sense now. "General Kenobi, you served my father in the clone wars". I mean, the prequels already stretched it thin. Now it would be something like "Hey Ben, remember me? Thanks for helping me when I was a kid". lol

Vader and Obi Wan fighting was so stupid. What else are they going to retcon? It wouldn't surprise me if they killed Luke.

I think it was mentioned earlier in the thread and I agree, that fight between Vader and Obi-Wan really did feel like a fan film, especially with it's generic as hell location. And yes, I couldn't believe no one could walk around the fire to chase Obi-Wan, previous shots made the mine or whatever quite large. Then with the fire scene they try to make the area look small but we know that's not the case.

The music is average and the sound design in general is extremely weak. I watched episode 3 of Rebels earlier in the day and that has way better sound design and music. It boggles my mind.

I do wonder how if the Feloni/Favreua lovers will turn on them or if they'll keep blaming Kathleen Kennedy.

Vader should still destroy Obi-Wan if he was serious according to this:

Unless something happens to weaken Vader and power-up Obi-Wan in the meantime... 👀

Vader's suit can even withstand lava, apparently he goes into the depths of sea of lava in Mustafar at some point in other canonical works.
No shit? I'm guessing that Vader goes into lava in the comics? That scene was.... Man wtf. All Tala had to do is shoot some random box and they couldn't get by. Rewound it and looked at the rocks on either side of entrance to that building and the stormtroopers totally could have climbed that.

Plus Vader force choked, levitated, and dragged Ben across the fire and then when Tala hits the box Vader can't do the same thing? I'm tired of making excuses in my head for shitty writing and execution just cause it's star wars.
The german VO for vader was terrible. Ruined the episode a bit for me :/

Especially with Star Wars, the german audio track has always been better in the past. Both technically and from the dub. It is also the case that many of the original voice actors from the movies have also reprised their proles in the animated series and the live-action series. So the continuity was also much better here.

With Vader, however, they have really dug deep into the shit here. No idea what was going on there.

€:
Here is an example of Vader's German voice so far (12:00):

Vader's Voice from Rogue One (1:51):

Vader's german Voice in Kenobi (0:13):

As mentioned before: The voice actor from Rogue One and Kenobi is the same. I do not think there is any doubt here that something is wrong. I suspect they wanted to make Vader's voice sound younger. As is the case in the English version, for example. Only the AI did a much better job.

Yikes that was seriously bad in the rogue one and Kenobi versions. The jedi fallen in the order one was really good. I think you are right that they tried to make him sound younger and it screwed it up. Is there not a James earl Jones filter that a German vo guy could take into? It's 2022. Seems like that should be "easy" for a sound person.

Then with the fire scene they try to make the area look small but we know that's not the case.

There was quite a bit of allegory here.

Their first duel was amidst the raging flames of the lava mines of Mustafar. Now ten years later, the fires of Obi-Wan's youth long since cooled, they find themselves in a quiet mine in the dark of night.

Obi-Wan tells Leia that using the Force is like turning on a light when one is afraid of the dark. When he's lost in the dark and terrified, as soon as he hears Vader's voice he doesn't hesitate to fire up his saber, after being reluctant to a moment before. This shows he's at the end of his rope, and Vader is fully in control of the situation. It also shows Obi-Wan falling into something Jedi are not supposed to succumb to: fear.

Finally, after rewatching the scene, Vader is clearly letting him go. There could be many reasons, but I think it's most likely that Vader figures he can let Obi-Wan wallow in his failure - because remember, Vader doesn't know that Obi-Wan is actually in anguish over him failing Anakin. Vader believes himself to have been the failure that day. Now he wants to make Obi-Wan feel the same - not realizing that he already is, just for reasons that Vader can now no longer understand.

Time for Obi-wan to rest up and get his mojo back. It’s tropey as fuck but I always love a good comeback story. Force ghost Qui-Gon needs to show up and tell him to…

See my reply above.

No doubt eps 3-6 will reveal why she so eager to hunt Obi-Wan but lets hope it something that doesn't diminish the characters of Obi-Wan or Vader. So far it's still a bit of a mystery to my why the Grand Inquisitor puts up with Reva's attitude so much when there's a very tight chain of command. There's no indication so far in the show that Vader would be fine with this sort of behavior from a subordinate.
Just circling back to point out Vader did the exact same thing to root out Obi-Wan that she was willing to do. And that he offered her a reward if things work out. That is the kind of stuff that reinforces my belief that her character has been perfect in the context of trying to impress Vader. People just didn’t understand how ruthless Vader is when wondering why she came in all ruthless IMO.

True except for the fact that she lies about Obi-Wan killing the Grand Inquisitor. That she lies about it leads me to believe that Vader wouldn't have approved 100% of her methods.

I’ll give you that. At a minimal she wasn’t sure if he would at least.

As an aside, other than wondering why Vader would let him go so easy, I loved everything about that last episode. The hatred spewing from Vader was top notch. There’s so much more they can do with his character after this if they want to in this time period. Hope they run with it.

There was a weird scene that stood out as odd to me when Obi-Wan had defeated the scanning droid and like 5 storm troopers and later he surrenders so quickly to 3 storm troopers that arrived shortly after. They let him keep his blaster in his hand pointing at them when he was getting on the ground.

Yeah that was weird. I dismissed surrendering as feeling he lost the element of surprise. But the troopers not screaming drop the blaster was hard to justify internally. If it wasn’t for extended Vader action I probably would have wondered about that much longer.

Meh the whole Vader scene felt weird from a space standpoint. Obi-wan is running and Vader is only ever seen marching, yet he’s catching up…just felt odd, and the letting him get away part had to have been intentional because there’s no way couldn’t walk right through that…unless they seriously want us to believe he couldn’t?

Anyway it was the best episode yet, I just wish the Vader sequence made more sense. Still fun to see them interact

So far the show is okay. It's better than the Boba Fett show so far. I probably liked episode 3 the least.

Someone said that the whole fight scene and area that it takes place in feels bland and I agree. There's nothing epic feeling and it almost feels like it's like a homemade movie shot on a phone. That whole flight should have taken place on a different set piece and felt more epic.

Well I had to watch one more episode to see Vader, and big shocker, this epic meeting was handled with all the cinematic style of an episode of the X-Files. This show is a sad joke.

The budget seems all over the place. The intro in Vaders lair was fine, but the fight scene? "Hey, why don't we just film it behind the studio. There's an abandoned mine we use!" It literally looked like Hayden and Ewan got in truck with a camera guy and filmed that in 5 minutes. Also, the lightsabers look like toys in the outside fight.

So Leia and Tala head down that long tunnel that ends at a spaceport or something, right? Leia and Tala walk down it for a while, then Tala turns back and tells Leia to keep going.

Meanwhile, Reva finds the tunnel entrance hidden in the robot shed and heads down it. Then Tala somehow...gets past her to show up to save Ben and Reva somehow gets past Leia to get to the end of the tunnel and kill the guy Leia has been casually strolling towards for 30 minutes???

Who the fuck is editing this show?

Exactly, the perception of where people are and where they’re headed feels like it makes zero sense.

I'm really trying to figure out how this is going to end.

Because we know Obi-Wan ends up back on Tatooine. Wouldn't have Darth Vader between this show and episode 4 have figured out that he went back to hide on Tatooine and hunted him down there?

I mean I know there's still three episodes left but you have a lot of holes like the tunnel that was mentioned, and will be one going back to Tatooine as we all know he does and the Grand Inquisitor's death since we know he's alive in rebels which is canon.

Maybe one or two of these things will get explained but the rest of it just doesn't make sense no matter what.

Imagine destroying the canon to do this.

I was watching the show while my wife was scrolling stuff on her phone, when I told her to look at Ewan McGregor's Obi Wan and Leia she said that for her, Star Wars ended with the prequels and that she didn't care about anything Disney is doing with the IP.

I felt jealous.

I figured one of two things:

The tunnel network had other paths we didn't see. Tala only turned back once she got Leia to the final segment, with only one destination. Tala then took another path to the mines.

or

Reva figured out that the tunnel would to the ports, and just went straight there instead.

Whatever the case may be, I think it was kind of sloppy for them not have caught this in editing and tried to make some change to explain it. Because otherwise people are reaching the same conclusion as you - that it makes absolutely no sense.

Look, some scenes are laughable..like having to turn off a laser gate to pass (obi & Leila) yet you can see next to that outpost is an epty space to walk next to lol. Its not most hight budget BUT....im liking the fact that Vader looks more like psychopath killing everything in and not in his way even though its done in a PG13 way. I always thought Vader should of been more of a loose canon, not some choke you in the air and give you a speech guy.

I'm from Austria and grew up with Arnold speaking perfect boring German because of dubbing. Fun fact: In German dubs, Arnold, Stallone, John Travolta, Dan Akroyd and John Cleese all have the same voice actor.
