A Fond Farewell to Oculus Go
More at source: https://www.oculus.com/blog/an-update-on-the-evolution-of-the-oculus-platform-/As we look to the future, we’re grateful to the Oculus Go community for pushing the VR revolution forward. Unique amongst a landscape of tethered and drop-in systems, Oculus Go pioneered the all-in-one category—a new kind of VR with more freedom and flexibility. And that was a game-changer. Oculus Go opened up VR to many more people, and it helped redefine immersive entertainment. From live concerts and sporting events to couch co-op gameplay, corporate training, and beyond, Oculus Go made new experiences possible for people around the world, and it laid the groundwork for Oculus Quest.
If you own an Oculus Go headset, you’ll still be able to use it even after sales of Oculus Go end. We’ll also continue to maintain the system software with bug fixes and security patches through 2022. That said, we won’t be shipping new features for Oculus Go moving forward, and we’ll no longer accept new Oculus Go apps or app updates into the Store after December 4, 2020. We’ll stop adding new Go apps into the Store after December 18, 2020. Click here to learn more.
It was the first of it's kind as a complete package at a low price and I love my Oculus Go. It's kind of expected but it's still a sad moment. It's use-case felt like when tablets launched. No one really knew what to do with it. Then years passed and everyone found their own use. My tablet became my manga reader and as for my Oculus Go, it became my personal home theater. To this day, it's still awesome to just put on the headset and sit in a big room all for yourself with a giant screen in front of you. It handles streaming over network out of the box, so with a free Plex setup (an app that installs on my PC) I could just stream anything from my PC with no hassle.
Of course, initially like many I've tried several apps and games, but in the end just watching movies and shows is 99% what I use it for nowadays. I could get a $2000 home theater setup or just get a $250 Oculus Go, so the choice was simple for me (I had it since launch). They stated they'll be forgoing 3DOF in favor of 6DOF. I personally think there's room for media VR devices, so I hope any company is gonna try this in the future again (keeping mass appeal in mind, for the casual audience, not specifically gamers).
Back in the day I had Myvu Crystal glasses for the iPod and the Oculus Go felt like another great step has been made into media glasses.

Here's hoping to a new future of media glasses, hopefully more compact until it becomes really easy to put on & off like it's second nature.
