Oculus Rift - Dev Kit Discussion [Orders Arriving]

I wonder how long before I can expect my mid-January pre-order to arrive. I have a week off at the end of June, really hope it's here by then!

Just going to throw this out there but if anyone on GAF is looking to sell their Rift send me a PM, I am really excited to try one out but keep passing on ordering of the site due to the long wait list.

Yeah I think I would have ordered already if it didn't take so long for it to arrive

For those of you that are hesitant about ordering, I have a feeling the wait won't be that long. It seems they're cranking out the orders now since mine is on it's way and I was order 44xxx

Decided to just ebay it since the 3 month estimated wait would kill me. I should be receiving mine in a few days which is also right before my 35th b-day.

Did it say literally it "shipped"? I know some of us got the e-mail a few days ago that said "Your Oculus Order is about to ship" which means it takes another week or 2 for it to ship. Also, 44xxx here.

I even saw a few used but like new ones go up as high as $1200. The one I wanted to bid on this morning sold for $1025 and seller was in Sweden. The lowest are around $550-700 but thats rare.

The eBay prices are insane. For that much it is tempting to sell, but I just think I would end up regretting it.

Or... I could sell then rebuy one(and wait) and pocket the rest.

So, forgive my asking, but i'm noticing people name-dropping Skyrim a fair bit as a retail game that already seems to work well with Rift.

Is there a specific mod that is allowing this to be the case, or is it just a game that works well with those 3rd party Vireio drivers? If so, and considering the engine, do the Fallout games work as well?

How have the Vireio drivers been thus far? Are people retro-fitting them to existing games and getting convincing Rift experiences? Doom 3, etc? Which games have people gotten up and running to a compelling level, beyond Source engine ones?

If there were a way to avoid Ebay/Paypal altogether and get $900, I'd probably do it. I don't trust paypal though; It's far too easy for the person on the other end to just say that they didn't get it/that it's damaged/etc.

My tune may change later today if I get the Rift and absolutely hate it. Hopefully that won't happen.

Where areeee youuuu UUUUPSSSSSS?

Just tried HL2 after calibration.

HOLY FUCK. xD

It's incredible.

Where do I change my height? I'm currently a bit shorter than any other character around. It feels good against combines, they're really menacing.

But I can't believe Freeman is just as tall as anyone else. xD

Is it this line?

vr_neckmodel_up "6.5"

I haven't tried tweaking Gordon's height myself. Hopefully someone else can help you out. I'm not 100% sure you can, though you can in Doom 3. Which I also recommend you give a go ;)

What is the estimate for the consumer version's release?

Any speculators want to give me armchair predictions on the second hand market come August. I'm really bummed I didn't back this and seeing them going for $600-900+ on ebay is making it worse; if I can order now play with it for a while and sell it for a profit or break even I would be in a better situation.

Honestly I think demand is going to keep going up. Especially after e3. Even with the new console madness I think the Rift is going to attract a huge crowd and each day of the convention it'll get bigger and bigger. If GDC is any indication it just might end up stealing the whole show. And once the mainstream really starts hearing about it things could get crazy.

But who knows, they could be planning a dev kit 2 for the fall with a much faster/larger production schedule. Even so, it definitely won't be out by August.

Not one but TWO got'damn FedEx trucks have driven by and caused me to run to the window and stare out longingly.

August? It'll probably be waning big time. I don't know how many orders they receive via their website, but they're creating about a thousand a week now. That means there could be 10k more of them in the wild by mid-august or so (without checking the math too stringently). Once they finish fulfilling pre-orders, the value of a Rift goes back down to $300 because anyone and everyone can buy one on their site.

Production is going to be their biggest hurdle, whatever they're doing now isn't even adequate for the relatively small amount of people ordering a dev kit

Dev kit 2 is just a small rumor anyway, although I would be thrilled to see it come to life and buy it the day it was announced.

Really hoping some good news comes at E3. I know Oculus is expected to be there.

I have a feeling that Devkit 2 was something that would have gone out to big name devs (and indie devs under NDA) without us necessarily needing to know about it. I have no proof, but Palmer loves to talk and I doubt we'd ever have heard about it from him if that slide hadn't surfaced.

Same here, but it looks like it may arrive in 2 weeks time. The average time from processing notification to doorstep seems to be 2 weeks, ie E3 week.

Tried the hydra Tuscany demo. Lots of fun but there is still a disconnect and a bit of lag. And i kept either hitting my desk or getting cables tangled up. the usb cable from the PC to the hydra base station is really short so 'put it directly in front of you' is easier said than done. Plus I hit my daughter in the face trying to throw a barrel :p

Personally I think it'll be more useful as an interim positional tracking tool until oculus have an official solution

CPS shows up "Sir, your daughters teacher noticed that she has a black eye. Would you care to explain how that happened?" "Well...you see... I threw a virtual barrel and.."

I've been developing a deep sea tech demo for the Oculus Rift this week.
I'll probably release it sometime over the weekend! Sneak preview....

My Rift came: Good sweet mother of God is this awesome. It has the obvious drawbacks, but when you're playing, you don't care. The Tuscany demo is easily the most incredible thing I've played right now due to the proper scale. You really feel like you're in a big open space when you're inside the villa.

The drawbacks (other than the obvious; Low res, no positional tracking, etc):

- Distant objects are blurry as hell. I thought blurriness on the side would be the issue; Nope. It's when an object appears at a distance and your brain says "wait a minute..you should be able to see that better" but you can't. I'm sure this is a function of the low resolution on the devkit, so hopefully it'll be fixed for consumer V1.

- The fit isn't going to be quite right, and it's going to drive you insane. I can't find a sweet spot where I don't see the middle divider. I can manually pull the Rift away from my face a bit and I can't see it, but that lowers FOV a bit. Oddly enough, I can only see it on the right side and not the left. I also see light out the bottom, which I'll need to fix with a little additional foam. You really need this as close to your face (and as close to your eyes) as humanly possible.

- Dust is a huge issue. I've got one little speck in the middle of the right side and it's driving me bananas. I'm afraid to open it up and blow it out though because I might make it worse. I'll do it tomorrow.

- Your eyes get dry quick when there's no air blowing on them. I have dry eyes anyway, but the problem gets much worse in the Rift.

- The lenses fog up

The pros:

- The tracking works. It lags just the smallest smidge that I can tell, but it's to the point where it doesn't bother me. I did the coaster ten times (looking backwards, looking forwards, etc) and didn't get the smallest hint of motion sickness. The same goes for Team Fortress 2.

- The 3D is the best 3D I've ever seen. I have a very nice Panny Plasma that's 3D and it pales in comparison. Things are not only 3D, but they're to scale, which really tricks your brain in a way that a 2D screen not filling your FOV can't.

- Even at this low resolution, it's not like it's so low that it's annoying. The blurring in the distance is, but up close, things look fine. It's going to look great at 1080p+

I know that this tech has a future, even if it probably won't gain mass market appeal. I don't see casuals and non-gamers strapping something this obtrusive onto their face for any length of time, but it's so cool that you can't ignore it once you've tried it.

Hey guys hopefully this is cool to post here. I have been making a game that is built from the ground up for the Oculus Rift specifically. If all goes well, I will hopefully be showing it at the Indiecade booth at E3. Here are some screens...

I dont know. This will have uses beyond gaming. I could definitely see it becoming something becomes 'normal' for anybody to use down the line. It could potentially be useful for workplace training, tourism, car or home shopping, driver education, kids entertainment, etc. I'm not even the most imaginative person in the world and I can foresee quite a bit of extremely useful and cool purposes.

Jesus H Christ!

anyone know if there is a way to mod a Sony HMZ with some type of lenses, along with software to make it possible to take advantage of these tech demos and games.. :(

They need to get Pinball FX2 and (when released) Pinball Arcade running on this. Just started playing it with 3D Vision and this game is the shit in 3D. Just awesome. And they even have a bunch of different camera views. The last of which is a VR type view. Like the Star Wars tables, you're in a room playing over the table. Have to imagine it'd be ace with an actual VR unit.

Man, I don't know. You can't just put these things on; You've got to put it on, then possibly monkey with lenses, then the screws on the side, then...

People complain about popping on 3D glasses that take absolutely no effort.

Never said it'll happen tomorrow. There's lots of time for refinements along with more games and applications.

I never believed 3D glasses were a gimmick, but compared to the Oculus Rift they are. Just gotta prove it to people and by the sounds of it, a first-hand experience does a pretty good job of that. And thats with a dev model with mostly hacked support.

The screens look very interesting, although the graphics are a little bit "bland". But the "examine" text gets me really excited, big adventure fan here! :)

I think it would be better to sell your HMZ on eBay and get the Oculus Rift for the money :P

To be fair, the biggest problem with 3D glasses was the shitty content they were viewing with it (terribly filmed without infinite depth, awful framerates that 3D desperately needs, and one size fits all convergence levels). Yeah, people could still get eye strain if they didn't set the convergence properly, but on PC, 3D gaming would have wowed most people if they didn't have such a stigma against even trying it.

That's the beauty of Rift. Even developers like Bethesda who previously hated on something they'd never even tried (even though their games look amazing in 3D), are now on board with 3D (even if it's with a device that seems to make everyone motion sick within 10 minutes the first time anyone tries it).

But, hey, I love 3D. So what ever gets them to swallow the medicine.

Hehe, fair enough! I don't really like textures, and only try to add geometric details where they matter, I get that it might not be appealing to others though ;)

There will be some light puzzle elements but it will mostly be a visual/aural discovery, short narrative game.

Is there a name so we can remember it? Looks real cool!

Thanks! Not yet, but I'm going to get on that ASAP...

Quick question (well two):

1: How do I set my monitor to 1080p and have the Rift auto-downscale that to it's native res when in game? I've got it set to 1080p/mirror right now, but that's not working (I have to use the native res of the Rift and then mirror)
2: With the TF2 IPD test, do I want to push the green line until I can just barely see a hint of green period, or just until the green "line" is almost gone.

So people who have tested the Rift for a while no, is it worth it? Is the tech really that good?

The tech actually works. That's the first time anyone has been able to say that about VR goggles. With a higher res screen and positional tracking, this thing is going to be amazing. I would wait for a consumer release if I were you, unless you don't mind taking a bit of a loss on ebay later when the consumer version comes out and you want to trade up.

You can't really explain it to someone that hasn't tried it; When you put on the goggles and load the Tuscany demo, it actually feels like you're in a villa with a high roof and chairs/fireplaces/etc at the height you'd expect them, with 3D that is real 3D and not oddly screwed up by shutter glasses or positioning. No other tech can give you that sensation.

I'm not sure this is possible. I was under the impression that the two options are to mirror your displays using the Rift's native res, or to extend your desktop with the Rift as the primary display.

Neither are really optimal solutions :\

Someone wanted to know about VR cinema's; Link me to one, and I'll try it. I don't know which one is supposed to be the best.

Edit: Found one. It....it works. It's obviously pixelated (everything on the dev model is) but you can watch stuff no problem in there. It does feel like being in a movie theater.

Edit 2: It's shocking to me how well this works. It fills enough of your FOV that you aren't wondering why you're not just watching on a TV, while also giving you the experience of being able to look around and see the rest of the theater. If it were higher res to the point that the pixel structure wasn't visible, I could see a multiplayer game working where people walk in, pick a seat, then either text or voice chat. I mean, I don't know who'd play it over just going to the movies, but it would be cool.

Oh well. It's not that difficult to keep changing back and forth.

I just tried Blue Marble: This is what the Rift was made for. The contrast ratio isn't quite there, but you don't care because it's just that fantastic. If that were an OLED screen with the deep blacks, and more definition on distant galaxies and on the Earth....wow. I was floored, even in its current form.

Something that didn't floor me though is Mirror's Edge. I loaded Vireo, set it to Oculus Rift/Hillcrest (hillcrest was the only option other than "no tracking") and when I got in game, there was was no tracking and the FOV/resolution were all screwy. I need to figure out what went wrong lol.

I also felt my first bit of brain panic when I was running along in Half-Life 2 when suddenly the game went to a loading screen mid-stride. It was like I hit a brick wall. The sensation was very jarring.
