Oculus Rift - Dev Kit Discussion [Orders Arriving]

Payday burning a hole in my pocket, so hard to wait for the consumer version when I keep reading this thread.

With the recent announcements me and my main online gaming buddy were talking about building a PC and getting Rift as an alternative console if both Sony and MS go with DRM systems.

Has anyone done a recommended build for this or is it as simple as the better a gaming PC the better it is? What's the minimum you'd have to spend to get solid 60fps and everything else on most next-gen level games that are likely to have Rift support?

Does anyone have any suggestions for calibrating IPD? I tried playing around with the settings, and while I could see a big difference between the different settings, I had a difficult time figuring out what was "correct" or even comfortable.

Are there any calibration apps other than the TF2 one? Steam won't connect to the internet on my computer for some reason.

Go to Windows Firewall (type firewall in the start menu box) and make sure Steam is set to allowed. Or you could disable the firewall for a second just to make sure.

Other than that, I don't know of any way to do it. I mean, you can go to an optometrist and get that info, but I don't know of any other Rift compatible tests.

I think 65 mm is pretty average. Mine measures at 60 mm.

Does it seem like you're seeing the middle divider for anyone else with the A cups? I can't decide if it's the divider, or some of the black screen around the area with rendered gameplay (if that makes any sense). I can't see it with the B or C cups.

I still hope someone will one day develop a Virtual Arcade with Metal Slug, Dodonpachi, SF and Games like this.

I really think such an experience could be great. I can imagine some kind of Multiplayer there, you connect your Arcade-Stick and play some Metal Slug with someone in a virtual Arcade.

Do I get to put coins on the machine to get in queue?

That is the question. I mean those arcade-Games still have some kind of copyright, so otherwise it would be piracy, wouldnt it?

But I doubt if someone develops something like that, they would make contracts with all of the copyright-holders.

I just think the idea would be nice, since I have been to arcades in Asia. Just put some kind of "emulator" in a Arcade-Virtual-Enviroment, have some kind of sound-enviroment, where you can still hear the sounds of the arcade next to you, as well as your own, but cant hear the ones that are farther away.

If I could develop anything at all, I would have developed something like that :D

New VorpX preview from Cymatic Bruce: http://youtu.be/kqsDdVmYF7I

Very exciting to finally see video of Bioshock Infinite running in the Rift. It is also awesome to see games that aren't even officially compatible running smooth with no render errors, even if it is without the 3D effect. I would be very interested to see how Hotline Miami would work with VorpX. If you could use your head to change the direction you're facing I could actually see it enhancing the gameplay. Although injection drivers obviously won't compare to the immersion of native HL2 support, if I can feel like I'm flying on a skyline I'm all in!

I'm expecting it to feel more like playing something on my HMZ (with less discomfort and nausea mind) than it feels like playing most Rift titles. I'm still looking forwards to trying it out though.

I just received my Rift. Wasn't expecting i to come early in the morning. USPS almost always come around 2-4pm. My birthday in in couple days abut this is like an early bday and christmas all rolled into one.

how do i play a movie on VR Cinema? the right mouse button brings up the options and seating chart but I dont see anywhere to choose video file.

edit: figured it out

Got my Rift today. Order 9794 in Florida.

Apart from a few dead pixels it's awesome. I spent a lot of time in the Blue Marble demo. it's easily my favorite so far. VR cinema was very cool too. The movie is a little blurry with the current resolution, but I could easily see myself watching a movie in the Rift instead of going to the theater.

I also really enjoyed Minecrift, but didn't play very long because I was motion sick before I had even started it.

Make sure you take it apart (carefully) to blow some compressed air in, since the dead pixels may actually be dust on the screen.

Released my demo Ocean Rift if anyone wants to try it out!

YouTube video.

This is a great demo! One of my fav so far.

Must weight a lot. That fact they're mentioning ship to door or pick up at distribution center sounds like it's shipping via freight instead of a UPS.

Wow, I've never had motion sick in my life.

But this Rift cause me first time in my life. I think I need a break from weed.

Omni Kickstarter is live

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1944625487/omni-move-naturally-in-your-favorite-game

Already around 25% after a half hour, the Trailer looks great but man the shipping costs are insane :lol

This looks like using it would be work. I don't mean as in doing the physical motions would be work, but as in using a kb/m or controller to emulate movement is work. It's not a natural user interface but it's emulating controller input (which is in turn emulating natural input) and you have to make specific motions to use it rather than a natural interaction with it/the virtual environment. I guess it's a move in the right direction, but it's just an alternative controller system atm and not a natural user interface like the Oculus Rift it. Not interested in using this personally, but I can see the appeal.

Based on the demo videos RoadtoVR posted (which is admittedly not an entirely fair evaluation), the 3D effect seems relatively poor and it appears to be objectively and significantly inferior to just playing (many of) the games in 3DVision/Helixmod.

Ok, those sharks are terrifying.

It's really unsettling. Nightmare fuel.

EDIT: really, I'm afraid to go down there again. xD

This should be a Megalodon-free version https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/55755/Ocean Rift/OceanRift_v1.01_Megalodon_Free.rar

Best piece of software I've tried so far. It's a perfect fit for the Rift. And damn it's scary.

Most frightening Ive ever felt in a digital experience including movies. It made my skin crawl and me fearful to try again. Never thought i'd need courage to enter a virtual world.

ActuallY I think it is the platform and the groove based shoes that are the most interesting.

You could use something like Kinnect to interpret the movement in a much better way, for sure. But this is much cooler than walking in place or some such nonsense.

I feel the same way, I can't wait to try it again, but I'm completely terrified I might end up being eaten by that giant shark.

I got a little distracted marvelling at the environment, I turned my head and a life-size whale was swimming a couple of feet above my head. Incredible. Congrats to the author, it's amazing how a little demo can be so much better than most games I've played.

And it proved that I'm a pussy. xD

That's expected, it's just reprojection.

some games offer more traditional methods. I forget what they called it and specifically which games, but I think Bioshock 1 is one of the games that offers both methods.

Also, I'm glad to see the shark demo scaring the beejesus out of lots of people. I wouldn't want to be the only one!

I've been working on a spider demo. I don't think I can work on it much longer. I must have been eaten by that Megalodon a hundred times during development, but this...

Genuinelly think you could get PTSD from this.

I cannot wait.

Combine these (and more phobias!) into one great big title. Dial a Phobia! Find out what phobia you have!

Fuck, I can't wait to get my OR in and try that undersea demo, but I had problems with the damned fishing underwater game on the Wii. I can't image the problems I'll have when I'm actually underwater!!!

And FUCK whomever makes a motherfuckin' SPIDER simulator!!!!!!

I couldn't bring myself to pledge for an Omni. I have a treadmill already, and enormous feet that probably wouldn't match up well with their shoes. I'll think about it when the consumer version is out and it makes more sense.

I would slap the shit out of someone that told me I was going in for something else and had realistic spiders show up instead.

Edit: You wouldn't even need a game to do this; A video of close up spiders in the VR Cinema demo would do all the damage.

It's so bad I'm thinking of putting safety mechanisms in place to stop people from pranking like that. A countdown warning on screen or something. This needs to be voluntary. It's literally a fishbowl full of house spiders on the user's head. Might just delete it.

You should join with the guillotine guys to make an indie horror bundle.

No way man, that sounds amazing.

Also, how long do orders normally stay in processing? Mine has been Processing for a week. I totally understand if things have been delayed due to what happened Friday. A loss of life is tragic and those close to him dealing with that is far more important than me being really impatient about receiving mine.

One to two weeks with another couple of days for shipping. It really depends where you are in the world.

While tragic, his death is unlikely to impact shipments because all of it is handled by third party fulfillment companies.

Spider simulator? Fuck you!!! Sadistic bastard!

Im going to mess with friends so badly with this, your still sick though.
