Oculus Rift - Dev Kit Discussion [Orders Arriving]

Is there a howto on how to get Doom 3 BFG working with the Rift? So far all I've found is a source repository where I'd need to compile it myself...not sure if I want to go through all that trouble.

While i'm here, I bought Lunar Flight and got a 75% off coupon, so first to PM me gets it, PM your SteamID.

Haven't tried Lunar Flight with the Rift, as playing it without the Rift is difficult enough. Initial impressions make me hopeful its a great experience though.

Here is a new round of some quick Rift game/demo impressions. I'm now over two weeks of having my Rift and I'm still not tired of it. The wow factor is still there for me if the demo or game is impressive enough. The early nauseousness that I was getting is nonexistent now and can even enjoy the crazy speeds of Half Life 2 while holding steady through long framerate drops. Anyways here's the impressions:

Deskope

A must have for people who don't have extended displays. This makes your desktop display completely viewable in the Rift. Be sure to turn off the headtracking and turn on the mouse navigation otherwise it could interfere with the headtracking in some games. There's lots of customization options here to make it easier on the eyes. Also there seems to be a glitch on my end where double mouse pointers could appear on the screen, but other than that this a go to tool for those having issues with getting set up with extended displays.

Super Mega Mega
Link

Pretty damn cool 4.5D platformer. It's a sidescrolling platformer/shooter that takes place in a cylinder in which you can look around. It's a little flawed at times but can potentially be the "must-have" Super Rift Boy game if it gets more polished up. Definitely a good inspiration to show how the classic sidescroller can also be become new experiences in VR as well. This is one of those games that should be near the top of your "VR try out" lists.

Already stated my thoughts in an earlier post. I do feel that this should be a requisite demo for anyone trying out the Rift that wants a more gamelike, yet less stressful experience. Simple yet elegant visual style, soothing music, and an overall well polished Rift demo. High recommendation.

Trial of the Rift Drifter
Link

Very creative tech demo where you are put on trial and must answer questions with 'YES' or "NO' nods. Lots of nice little touches here and has a cool visual style. There's multiple endings as well depending on your answers. Well worth checking out for something unique. Would be something fun to test out with people.

Lunar Flight
Link

I've already put in over 3 hours into this. It's pretty difficult at first, but the atmosphere, music, and excellent Rift interface keeps me coming back and wanting to master its mechanics. While the OR support is still in beta, this is probably the best overall full fledged gaming experience on the Rift.

Greeble
Link

An early tech demo, music visualizer where you're floating through a white abyss filled with pulsating spherical objects. It's very early and limited, but the visuals and music is very nice. It's an unique experience that's good for a one time whirl.

Hoasca VR Psychedelic Experience
Link

I was pretty 'meh' on this, but that might've been because I wasn't on the required hallucinogens. Basically you're given the option of about 8 psychedelic rooms to go into and trip out. At this stage I only found about two of the rooms enjoyable to look at. The creator is planning a lot more so I may check this out at a later iteration.

Attack of the Boulders
Link

This is still in the very early stages and doesn't quite feel like a game yet. Still, the old school vector graphics plus the responsive headtracking here really make this pop. Worth checking out for the visual aesthetic alone. Would love to see a vector Tempest on this.

Quake
Link

I really wasn't feeling this in Rift form. At the time I was playing it the speed made me feel a little uneasy. It didn't feel quite fully adapted to the Rift to me. But like many other old games adapted to the Rift, even age old 3d graphics feel like new in it. Even though I wasn't particularly feeling this game, that doesn't mean I don't want more old games to be retrofitted to this.

Logistics
Link

A simple game where you have to chuck Rift orders into the appropriately colored trucks. The idea is cute but I felt it was a little too chaotic and a bit glitchy at the moment to be enjoyable for me.

Surgeon Simulator 2013
Link

While this has official Rift support I feel there's still some things to be ironed out here (for
example the headtacking can gradually lose its original position). I really enjoyed the game's morbid sense of humor but this really is meant to be played with a Razor Hydra. With a mouse and keyboard I felt a surgeon who just performed a self lobotomy right before going into an operation. May want to hold off if on it you don't have a Hydra.

Oculus Tetris
Link

Obviously someone was bound to port Tetris to this. While it plays just like what you'd expect, I found it visually a bit unappealing to be a fully enjoyable Tetris experience. Give me something with a bit more Russian inspired in atmosphere.

Rift Racer
Link

While I haven't tried iRacing yet I did get to fool around with this tech demo. Without a wheel the 360 controls are a little awkward to play with. It's pretty amusing to attempt to drive through a loop and the feeling of the world go upside down on you. Pretty much feels like a tech demo driving game and nothing more.

First Law
Link

Very solid tech demo where you piloting a spaceship. Here you can spawn several enemy ships to battle against. What makes this works is the strong use of color, spot on headtracking, and very responsive controls. Love going back to this every now and then.

Zombies on the Holodeck
Link

As someone who enjoys the classic B&W b-movies, the visual aesthetic here hits home. As far as the game goes I felt it was rather clunky with the 360 controller so it might be better played with the Hydra. Didn't play too much of this because of that, but it's something different visually to view at in the Rift.

Enable beta builds in steam for the game and download the latest one, it as native support.

I knew that they were planning to support the Oculus Rift eventually but this is the first thing I hear about a public beta. Did a search and found nothing and I can't check Steam till I get home, in a few hours. Are you sure about this?

I don't have the game personally but I've heard from multiple people that they got a beta build that has the support in it, nontheless, it's apparently due in the next patch if said beta build is not actually publically accessible.

So... i've had a tough couple of days, and this news totally just put a smile on my face. Thanks!

My Rift will hopefully ship soon, and i'll have one of my weirdly favorite games to play on it!

Meh, there are a few open betas for Euro Truck Sim 2 but... doesn't seem like the VR one is among them.

Soon, soon...

Damn, I was really looking forward to that. Although I'm not sure how handling a steering wheel (G25) without seeing it would translate into a solid experience.

Thanks. I followed the tutorial, but the game doesn't seem right. The world geometry distorts a lot when I look around. Seems like the fov/camera aren't quite right.

Did you set the FOV to 110?

I remember plagiarize and others here suggesting it should be a bit lower, otherwise you get a fisheye effect.

With the Stalker series being on sale on Steam, I imagined them and the Metro series on Oculus Rift and...well I may have made a mess of my pants. Then again, Fallout with OR support would be amazing.

If someone doesn't port F Zero, or damn near replicate it, before I have one of these, I will learn game making just to do it myself.

Someone please do it first someone.

I heard there are mods to make this work with Skyrim. Is this true and if so how well does ti work?

You have to use the Vireio Perception driver and tweak some things. I couldn't get it working quite right. You need to disable shadows but the packed in directions weren't getting rid of them totally, and they only render on one of the two images whch looks absolutely whack when viewing through the rift.

Having the head tracking come from mouse emulation doesn't feel as natural when looking around either. Menus are also completely unusable.

I missed your PM, your added on Steam now! Thanks but I got another code. That being said first to PM me gets my code now! Include Steam ID.

Ah, that's disappointing.

A sandbox game like Skyrim made for Rift is all I want!

Is The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena playable on the Rift [original and Athena expansion] ? That game would be perfect for VR. Sneaking, 1st person combat, slow movement speed.

Yeah I did. At 90 it seems about right, but then the FOV seems overly restrictive. I guess it's an issue the game that hasn't been worked out with regards to the Rift.

Is anyone else having a hard time with Lunar Flight? I've crashed like four times and I've watched the tutorial. It seems like everything is so mechanical, but at the descent it's like "Oh shit, I suddenly have no control over anything" and I crash into the side of the moon.

I'm having some issues with the interface since it wont allow me to set mission/cargo for some reason... but flying feels incredibly easy with an xbox controller. Well, after I discovered what the left stick was for.

Yeah it took me a good while to to get the hang of Lunar Flght, but I'm now able to complete survey missions and fly back to my base without much hassle. I upgraded to Level 1 recently which makes traveling much, much easier. I recommend watching the tutorials on the official website to get a good understanding at how the missions are set up since the ingame terminals do not do a good job explaining what to do.

Also recommend just taking a bit of time to screw around with the ship to understand what each individual button and stick does and watching how they affect your numbers in front of you (switching your monitors to view the outside of your ship makes this easier). Until you start leveling up you need to be extra cautious of how much thrust you put into that ship. ALWAYS keep your eyes on your numbers. Focus mainly on controlling your ship with just the left stick and right trigger in the beginning. Keep that thrust power around 3.00 at first otherwise you might find yourself having a hard time slowing down when you reach your objective. Baby the hell out of your movements. If your start finding yourself veering wildly around just pause and select recover so you don't have to pay the penalty damage.

If you mean starting a mission just select it in the terminal on your left (dpad can scroll through the missions) and hit START. You should here the chime which means you've started the mission.

Eurotruck Simulator 2 looks awesome with Rift

I can't wait for official Rift support in ETS2. The current version of Vireio doesn't work very well for me.

In the latest version of Vireio, I can't adjust the eye separation with F2/F3 like I could in the previous one. Does anyone else have that issue?
Edit: Just checked the development forum. Apparently the most recent vireio build is broken.

Does Lunar Flight have official Rift support?

edit: wow, just tried Surgeon Simulator. Amazing with the Rift. It improves the experience tenfold.

Lunar Flight's is official but is still in the beta testing process. It still has some minor issues to iron out but it's very much playable. To play it with the Rift you will have to enable the beta option in the "properties" menu in Steam.

do you have a hydra too? being able to use two hands at once AND being able to easily see how far from your patient your tools are make things noticeably easier, although it's still the same fun 'oops I just stabbed him in the face' experience.

After trying pretty much all demo and games. it's still missing that killer game right now (obviously its way to early)

I wonder what it will be?

I suspect Hawken, Star Citizen and Theme Park Studio will be killer for me. I think it feel better when sitting down that you cannot move.

If you feel that way at this point, it might end up being nothing, if you'll pardon my cynicism. :P Half-life 2 and Team Fortress 2 are apparently pretty decent if you can avoid whatever latency/warping/blur/delay/resolution problems may be involved.

Toma, I downloaded Anteworld or Outerra or whatever the demo is called, since that seemed to be the only way I could find to easily buy the full version, but I still haven't actually launched it to try to find the full version purchase link.

Minecraft. Seriously.

When/If it has perfect support, and its sounding like it nearly does, it will impress a lot of people within its very loyal community. The game is all about escaping into/living in a world of your own, and your own creation, and apparently its scale is also a perfect fit for Rift.
