Oculus Rift - Dev Kit Discussion [Orders Arriving]

I could also try it yesterday for the first time and have to say.

I am impressed. It really felt like I have been in this house in the tuscanny, the first time I saw it. Tried some other demos too, though some have a more believable scale than others.

But really...
... the screendoor-effect/resolution is kinda destroying the overall-experience. It seems like you are looking through a mosquito-net the whole time.

I wouldnt recommend buying a Devkit, but rather wait for the Consumerversion.

You guys remember that demo where you could examine a 3D scan of a woman, right? Well, the guy released a new demo a few days ago, this time with a different pose and the model fully nude. You can download the demo from Infinite-Realities' site (they did work on the promotional trailers for Dead Island, Mass Effect 3, Cyberpunk 2077 using their scanning tech) here. Even though the pose is tasteful, it does feature a fully nude woman and is obviously NSFW.

If you don't have a Rift and/or want a more in-depth examination of the demo, I made a video at my site. I'm not here for advertising purposes so I won't post a link, but you should be able to easily find it via my profile.

It's the most impressive demo I've experienced thus far, and even with the low-resolution of the Rift, I found the 3D scan to be remarkably clear and detailed. The future possibilities of this tech are amazing.

I think I will check out LemonGremlin's Crashland next! I need more Razer Hydra stuff to test out.

Really wanted to grab a hydra but I won't because the sixsense stem is supposed to go up on kickstarter sometime this month.

Anyone had the issue where their taskbar won't go hidden? I have it set to hide when not scrolled over but it's now locked to at least visible at all times *can still make it bigger*

Are there any plans to build headphones into the consumer version?

Cans included or an optional purchase perhaps but surely nothing like that would be integrated. Having anything but high grade audio equipment for VR isn't really acceptable, which means it adds quite more to the price and bulk of the device and it would limit user choice in something that can be very personal.

Just saw the new naked version of that 3D model demo;

A: This is pretty cool technology
B: Aha. Ahahahahahaha.
C: The future is AV actresses selling 3D models of themselves for cash.

I will check that video out when I'm home from work. Can I expect close ups so close that you almost clip inside the model?

I don't know about the video, but in the unity demo, you can get all up in there. Well, she's got her legs sorta crossed, so you can only get all up onto the surface of there, but yeah, things get weird the closer you get.

Someone should create a runner game on her body.

This could be unfortunate for the actresses if technology advanced to the point where the scan was only used once, and the model could be animated from there. But at least for a while, I expect there to be a need for motion capture and different base poses. Or they could try to license the model and get some amount every time someone purchases it, and then you end up with piracy questions and so forth. Interesting times.

In particular, you mentioning AV actresses makes me think of Diamond Age. It's a cyberpunk/scifi book in which, if I recall correctly, actors/actresses could be hired out as virtual actors/actresses for experiences or products. Someone might want to be in a murder mystery for example, and some of the guests might be other "players", but other guests might be paid professionals lending their body/voice/actions/whatever.

Has there been any indication of a ballpark timescale for the consumer product? Obviously a precise release date isn't yet realistic, but are we talking twelve months, eighteen, twenty-four?

i didn´t even know Oculus would have their own booth at Gamescom. As full as the Gamescom always is the queue for Oculus should be many hours :lol

If Oculus were to announce an HD dev kit for sale, would it be at Gamescom? If there's a chance of that, I should probably wait a week before ordering a dev kit, just in case.

I'm also a bit put off by the original dev model due to all the comparisons between it and the HD model. Everyone keeps saying it's like night and day.

For everyone wondering about the HD Dev Kit, I really wouldn't hold you breath. I'll be happy to eat my words if the do come out with one, but the fact is the current Dev kit is only something for indie developers to play around with and get a feel for what works and what doesn't in VR. With easy integration through Unity, we get smaller games and demos that help to build hype while AAA companies are working on their games for the eventual consumer model. If anyone has or will get their hands on an HD dev kit, it's the people over at Valve, EA, and Ubisoft (which are more than likely made individually and not on the Chinese production line).

For everyone else, there will be the consumer model. It will be released next year, have at LEAST a 1080p display with smaller screen giving it a higher PPI, have positional tracking, maybe front facing cameras for augmented reality or positional tracking, and a much more sleek design making it more light and comfortable. Other bells and whistles would be an added bonus. So please, stop asking when the HD Dev Kit will be released...

That being said, if don't have a Rift and are checking out this thread and reddit and the oculus forums on a daily basis, just order one. The time from purchase to delivery has been greatly reduced (I think it may be at a month and some change now) and the experience is phenomenal. I've been playing AAAAaaaaAAAaaa! the past hour or so and had an absolute blast.

Lastly, a general announcement. Use the A lenses. Don't use the B or C lenses. The current version of the Rift was designed for the A lenses, and the other ones will not only decrease the FOV, but also double the pixel size... seriously, double the size. If you have glasses, get contacts. They're about 40 bucks for a half year supply. For those who "can't wear contacts," you get used to them, trust me.

But seriously, stop asking about the HD Dev Kit.

Clearly this is an Oculus Employee spreading misinformation. HD Dev Kit confirmed.

But contacts are awful, I don't want to get used to them! Should just get lasik but I'm so used to glasses at this point that I don't really want to.

So I tried a little bit so far and I think I set everything up right. Cloned my displays, made Rift the primary, and changed the resolution to 1280x800, and followed with calibrating with the SDK software.

I tried the tuscany demo and it's pretty surreal. Yeah the resolution is bad but I can look past it. Only small gripe I have is the image seems a bit blurry, I'm using the default A lenses and tried messing around with the settings but I do have iffy vision so it could just be my eyes.

What's everyone's preferred contract/brightness or that's pretty much different depending on the game?

In my experience it depends on the game but for most games I usually have the brightness level no higher than 20, adding more brightness only makes the low res screen look even worse. And with contrast I wouldn't go higher than 45-50 except for Blue Marble which looks better with high contrast.

I'm trying to play Skyrim with the Rift and can't get it to work. The site says to just copy and paste the /bin dll's in the Skyrim folder but it doesn't seem to work. Something else I need to do?

edit: n/m, got it to work, but it's not very playable. The low res makes distant terrain impossible to see and gave me a headache pretty quick.

edit 2: Okay, I adjusted the convergence by holding down F2 and it's MUCH better. Playable now and pretty cool. It seems head tracking is only available for kb/m as it wouldn't work with a controller. This would be really good with a bunch of texture mods/ENB and with a better resolution for the Rift.

Aside from the demos, is there any actual game that is worth checking out?

I only tried Strike Suit Zero. The 3D is fine but the HUD is way to sensitive.
