Oculus Rift - Dev Kit Discussion [Orders Arriving]

Thanks. I was watching videos with people playing Skyrim a bit ago so they must have hacked it? But this seems like the best overall way to do it for sure.

there are other drivers like vorpX already out. Vireio and TriDef.

But it looks like vorpX has really great stuff to let you better control the UI, watch cutscenes etc. The other drivers just do the 3D effect but do nothing to enhance other stuff like UI.

Awesome! Thanks for the info.

I'm waiting for some impressions too. So far every time I've tried a game with one of the current VR injection drivers it seems cool for a few minutes but it's nothing I'd want to play through a game with and I'm guessing that VorpX will probably be the same. Only games that officially support the Rift or have had support added to the source code are really worthwhile.

I just ordered one... even though I was torn on it... and advice in this thread that maybe I should wait.

Just the potential year long wait for the consumer + the fact that I just got my $900 PFD for living in alaska was just too much.

Curious what the GF will say.

The biggest thing that ruins injection drivers for me is the narrow field of view. It really kills most of the immersion that the rift provides.

Played this for the first time at the eurogamer expo and for me it was by far the most "next gen" experience at the show. Neither PS4 or Xbox one impressed me like this. Its absolutely surreal, the feeling of being inside the world being completely immersed. This coupled with the kinect 2 is the next step in gaming. For the first time in a game I shouted omg in the middle of a crowd.

This is true next gen gaming.

And that's why Sony is working on their own VR headset.

Problem for Sony could be that, if they push VR hard, they could make their PS4 looking bad compared to good PCs.

It´s not like people who buy a 300$ Headset would not build a 700$ PC or buy a 999$ Steambox.

Anyone try VorpX yet? I was about to pull the trigger but I read some stuff on Reddit that makes the DRM sound kind of awful so I'm not sure if it's worth putting up with.

I dont see that as a problem. A shitton of people would get it only for GT7.

Can you explain that a bit more?

A lot of games don't let you turn up the horizontal FOV high enough for the Rift and almost no games allow you to increase the vertical FOV at all.

Here's what Half Life 2 looks like with Vireio Perception:

and this is native:

It's a huge difference.

Can somebody PLEASE post impressions or short video playtrough of Deus Ex Human Revolution with Oculus Rift? VorpX supports it in both 3D rendering modes.

Has anyone received theirs from the latest batch yet? Mine is apparently sitting waiting to be shipped.

Got an email about a week ago saying "it's getting ready to be shipped and you will be notified when it does in 24-48 hours" or something. Nothing came and I got worried

Got an email yesterday with tracking info saying it's in Dublin and should be delivered tomorrow lol

This is what I'm very concerned about. Will the next gen consoles be powerful enough for VR?

they won't be powerful enough for the rift if oculus can source some great screens that don't exist yet (but should do soon), most people think or claim they are targeting 1080p 60hz but they're not

Palmer Luckey said:
Realistically, we're not targeting any specific resolution as "this is the right resolution" because until we get to that 8k by 8k or higher resolution, we just want it to be as high as possible. We're at 1080p in the prototypes that we're showing, but we'd like to push it even beyond that.

vsync -- yes, you really need to do it, or the whole world appears like it's tearing. And you really need at least 60 frames a second. Right now we're saying 60 because that's what our hardware is capable of running, but if we had a display that could run at 90 frames a second, it makes a huge difference. Enough where you're going to want to run at 90 frames a second as often as you can.

that 2560x1440 5.5 inch inch lg screen is interesting but too small, maybe soon tho

So jealous! I got that same email last week and had my hopes up that I'd get it this week. I'm having a hard time waiting. I'm going to overdose on reaction videos here soon.

Ordered August 27th, got the Processing E-Mail on September 26th, got the Shipping Notification today, October 4th. Estimated delivery is October 9th.

I'm pretty much on the above posted exact time line. Just got my tracking number and should be getting it Weds.

Can't wait

Got mine today! :D It's fricken awesome

Though for the 15 minutes I was using it it made me kinda dizzy so it will take a while before I get used to it, if I ever do.

Still messing around with stuff though and not really sure if the IPD is correct or if the lenses are the right ones. Is everything in the distance in the Tuscany demo supposed to be blurry and indistinguishable as part of the low res? or is that bad calibration?

That's the low res, unfortunately.

That said, you may also be poorly calibrated which I suppose could make it worse. But even optimized it's not gonna get sharp until a higher res Rift is made.

Mine is coming monday. Sooo hyped!
Im going to create lots of stuff myself, if I do anyting good Ill post it here :)

Probably mostly the low res but try moving it up and down on your face a little. For me, there's definitely a sweet spot where everything is clearest.

Yeah I messed around a little with the distance of the lenses and tried different lenses and it became a bit clearer as well as good positioning on my head

Such a freaky fucking experience walking around in a game. Gives you a real sense of dizziness at first though.

A 1080p version would be insane\

For the love of god.... can somebody try VorpX and Deus Ex Human Revolution? :)

I bought Vorpx today and am waiting for the registration key email to come back so I will try it then :) I think that game will be really jarring though due to how frequent it goes from first to third person

It's wild, isn't it? I hadn't used mine in a week or two, mainly because I've been really busy but also because my limited gaming time has been consumed with GTA5, but last night I fired up a few of my fav demos and it hit me all over again. Just so damn cool and trippy.

I'm still not sure what lenses I should be using or the physical distance of them from my eyes. When I go to do the IPD test the edges of the text box are really blurred but the center is clear as day

Not sure if my IPD is set right either, though I do follow the test multiple times

I think this is just the way the Rift and lenses work, and there's not really a way to fix the center being clear and the edges being blurry. Maybe I'm wrong though, or maybe someone come up with different lens tech.

I think being able to move the lenses left and right would work, so you can physically separate them or bring them closer together. Cos not everyone's eyeballs are the same distance apart and there's only so much the IPD calibration can do

They need to come out with this shit sooner. I'm so ready to buy a devkit but knowing that the HD prototypes are so much better is forcing me to wait it out. It's killing me, though.

So should I buy Vorpx? What's this about horrible DRM?

I haven't tried it so I can't comment on how well it works but when you buy it, you have to wait for the developer to manually activate you and send you a key. This is taking 2 or 3 days+ for a lot of people. Also, you can only activate it on 2 computers and if you do any kind of significant upgrade it will see it as a different computer and you will need to contact customer support to get it manually activated again.

I know the feeling well. I'm chomping at the bit for it, but I'm afraid getting the developer one with the screen door effect would turn me off of it in the long run.

Seems a bit strict but then again you have programs like Fraps absolutely being destroyed by piracy so it might be understandable. Program seems like it could be a really big deal though. Any more impressions? Really thinking about buying the program but I just want a little assurance of the quality.
