Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 announced, up for preorder (based on Crystal Cove)

I know, I wanted to know the difference between Sony Morpheus and this new Oculus Rift 2.
Well, I just told you. DK2 (the new Rift development kit) has better screen technology (and maybe better tracking) than the Morpheus which is currently being demonstrated.

I just wanted to clarify that neither are necessarily indicative of final retail products.

How does it compare to Sony Morpheus? Which is better and has better tech and features? I know Morpheus is better than Rift 1 but what about this Rift 2?
Its probably similar. Then again they're all prototypes, does it matter much? Both Sony and Oculus will likely launch superior products.

If I would need a better PC for this I would have ordered it the second I saw the thread. This is a good price for the specs. I'm looking forward to the impressions. Maybe I will go for it in the fall, after I get a decent PC.

So how long has the pre-order page been up? Three hours? Seems pretty safe to assume we're still in the first batch, but you never know.

Man, this is so tempting. I backed the Kickstarter on the first day and got my DK1 in the first shipment almost exactly a year ago and it blew me away. I haven't been using it all that much lately, though, as small demos are only interesting for so long and there still isn't much in the way of full-game experiences yet. I kind of want to hold out for the consumer version and/or Sony's headset but I'm not sure if I'll be able to.

That video is pretty great. I loved the "Don't preorder it!" at the end, even if I can't follow their advice. The idea of "if anything, share a devkit among a few RL friends" is pretty good, too.

Jesus crystals I am so happy.

Makes sense, too. Bigger and better lenses.

I want to sleep until July. I damn well better be in the first shipment batch.

Edit: Almost same time last year (May) I remember the wait being unbearable for the first DK, and finding out I'd be in the third or fourth batch was torture. I was on pins and needles the day I knew UPS would be delivering it. Was literally waiting by the door when the UPS guy knocked and opened it promptly like two seconds later lol. The unboxing and first go was a glorious experience. The wait might suck, but be thankful it won't be 6 months like us kickstarter backers lol.

tested.com tries DK2 and confirms a greater FOV, both horizontally and vertically! Increased FOV

Great times!!

Fantastic if its definitely true, I have to admit the one thing about DK1 which was slightly disappointing to me was that I had hoped the FOV might have been a bit higher. So this is a major thing for me!

Can't understand the don't buy it now thing though really, as if you won't be able to sell it on ebay for at least your money back for months afterwards anyway.. In fact as the queue becomes longer I'd be surprised in a couple of months if its not selling on ebay for at least twice what you'll pay for it now.

If it's anything like the first one. Hell, even the razor hydra is selling for hundreds of dollars second hand now.

Ugh, I actually think I am going to wait. I was planning on getting the DK2, but I guess I just hope that CV1 will still be released in 2014.

Same exact thing happened with DK1...so I imagine I will be regretting this decision in July.

Trust me, I know. I was on board with Palmer long before he even made a kickstarter. We used to trade old HMDs and shit years ago, and he even modded one of mine for me! This wait won't be anything compared to the first DK1...

but still... I want it right now. I have so much planned.

This will be unbearable.

I think you will able to sell it day1 for over 1000$.

Oh nice. Out of curiosity what are you working on? Don't have to go into specifics if you want it to be hush hush just curious if you're working with software/hardware etc. There's so many people dipping their hands into VR right now it's really exciting see all these projects floating around.

could i use the dev kit to watch 3d movies and play regular pc games in 3d?

Yes and kind of.

There are 3D movie theater apps that work really well (except for the low-res image on the current DK1).

There are also drivers that inject warping, head-tracking, etc. into games but trying to shoehorn VR support into games that don't support it natively is never a very compelling experience in my opinion.

So if I'm not dev, would I still be able to use this? Would it be worth buying? I realize the consumer release will be superior but I don't mind buying both, the thing is, will this one be at least somewhat easy to set up or is it a still a hassle?

I'm just a diehard VR enthusiast! I've wanted this since the 90's, and have probably owned a dozen HMDs beginning with the Virtual i-o glasses all the way up to the DK1 as my latest.

I know they stress that only devs order this, but there is no way I can wait. I have 2 dev kits, and I had some of the most enjoyable experiences with them.

the first dev kit was perfectly usable for advanced PC users that don't mind getting their hands dirty with dev consoles, ini files and the like. there are full games that already support it (Half Life 2 and Lunar Lander spring to mind). I imagine support will happen for the dev kit 2 in many / most cases.

It may or may not work perfectly out of the box for things like HL2 (different warping factors and resolutions might be a factor, depending on the new lenses) but things will come out at a steady pace that are worth playing with. I'm sure a lot of the popular demoes and experiences will be updated with full positional tracking, even though I'm sure a lot of things won't be.

you can use the amazing Rift Cinema to watch 3D movies, but no, you can't really use it to play regular PC games in 3D.

You can use injected drivers like TriDef to create 3D for games. The support is wonky for most things and you usually have to fiddle with settings like head tracking values and world scale to get things looking decent, and some games look surprisingly good. Sonic Generations has absolutely amazing 3D in the Rift using TriDef, but performance isn't optimal. Metro Last Light is another one that looks good but the 3D effect is less pronounced than something with native support. Someone even got Dolphin working with TriDef on the Rift. Wind Waker is gorgeous in VR :-)

Thanks for the info man. Now to decide, to buy or not to buy.

It doesn't look like anyone will be able to figure out the shipping queue based on these order numbers.

Hopefully those of us who ordered today will all be shipped out in the first batch, though.

I have played Sonic and Metro on my Rift using TriDef, and I found the experience very lacking, personally. Playing a 3D game on a virtual screen (ala Steam VR but in 3D) is a much better way to go, imho. Added support for something like Sonic that offers SBS 3D natively in game, should be pretty simple actually.

Awesome! I'm same as you just an enthusiast but the Rift was my first VR experience, and I couldn't resist either despite it being a dk :-)

Hey guys, I'm thinking of ordering one but I want to make sure my Laptop can run it because I haven't updated my pc in years.

I have Envy 17 3D, ATI Radeon 6850M, 120HZ refresh rate, 8 giga DDR3 ram and an i7 2630QM (2.00GHz). it's going to cost me 485$ so it's better to make sure I can run it before ordering and I haven't been following the Oculus rift since recently
