God knows if my order has gone through or not :( I have contacted support.

How far behind in queue would I be if I order in about 12 hours? Paypal funds locked until then, awful timing :/

OculusVR going into full meltdown-panic mode with Sony revealing the Morpheus.

Makes sense given the extremely suspicious coincidence of having this piece of new news released right after Sony's announcement.

Oculus' days are numbered, and they know it. You heard it here first, folks.

Sony has to overcome Sony first.

1. Limited by PS4 power

2. Limited by Sony's inexplicable urge to add Sony tax to their "luxury" items

3. Limited by Sony's inexplicable addiction to proprietary components

4. Time. This device will not be in consumer's hands before Rift. The announcement was an ad for devs to get started on thinking about considering possibly making games for it

5. Limited by PS4. Indies will give these devices life in the early days. Rift on PC means indies have much cheaper (free) option to develop for it.

6. Rift on PC means consumers can throw as much or as little GPU power at their games as they can afford

7. Rift can evolve (e.g. sharper screens) more frequently by not being locked into a console generation. Morpheus must maintain same specs for the entire generation.

Sony could slap my guesswork around and release this next week though. But I really think they are a very long time from selling this. Last night was them announcing it to devs and asking "Will you make games for it?"

If I'm wrong, and if this can be used as a simple plug-and-view video display, I am very very tempted. Because Shadow of the Colossus, welcome back to my eyes and ears.

Yup I am... Checking my statement to make sure all these failed attempts aren't charging like crazy on my card.

Now might be the time to tell you that it has been confirmed for a while that they would be releasing dk2 and rumoured for months that they would be showing it a gdc. Get your console wars shit away from me and enjoy VR

Yup. Get that when I try to order with CC. When I try to order with Paypal the website times out. Ugh...

Palmer mentioned in Engadget video, consumer version is "close", higher res than DK2, 90+ Hz display.

Honestly, I'm a little bummed. Getting a PC that will be capable of running pCARS in 1440p @ 90+ framerate is not only hard, but for vast majority of users maybe even impossible. With such setup for consumer model, 95% of the games will be simpler Unity/U3/U4 projects. Nobody can resonably expect that large ammount of PC users will adopt SLI GPU cards and 1000W PC rigs.

Kotaku impressions, including impressions of that 'little knights in the living room' demo:

http://kotaku.com/the-new-oculus-rift-is-very-cool-and-you-can-get-one-t-1546773756
At first we kept our swashbuckling constrained to the coffee table between us, but soon the fight spilled over to the rest of the room. It became clear that I could pilot my knight anywhere in the room—into far corners, knocking over lamps on side-tables, and even onto my friend's lap. When his knight jumped up onto my virtual lap, I flinched - this weird little thing was standing there, right in front of me, swinging a sword. Thanks to the DevKit 2's head-tracking, when I recoiled my view actually pulled back from the thing on my lap. Again, difficult to put into words, but uncanny.

I eventually sent my own knight off behind me, and I turned around to follow its progress. It was another of those "Dude, you are doing something you have never done before" moments—craning my neck backward, watching a tiny creature run behind me through a room that doesn't exist.
Sounds good. I was looking forward to the first demo which shows a shared VR experience.

Is there content from day one except for some techdemo's?
Otherwise its a pricey gimmick.
Its a development unit. You may be able to buy one, but its called a dev kit for a reason.

There is a fair amount of VR content out there now, though.

I think it's quite impressive for $350, despite not being the "consumer" version. I'm guessing the consumer version next year will go for full-blown presence? (Might there be any way to force this version to do 90 Hz?)

Ordered!

The order button was fubar on Firefox. It's the actual orange line to the right of the Edit Order button. I checked the checbox without caption and clicked on that little orange line and got my confirmation email a few seconds later. Whew! ;-)

So they'd previously said DK2 would be basically CV1, is this that, or has that been put off and this is a stopgap because of the DK1 component shortage?
They said DK2 is "70% there" if DK1 is 0% and CV1 is 100%. Whatever that means.

I don't expect another huge step in functionality (like low persistence or motion tracking), just incremental technical improvements. That is, potentially higher screen refresh rate, or better tracking accuracy, or (and that one is very likely) lower weight.

$300 for DK1, $372 for DK2, $350-$400 for CV1, and likely again for the inevitable CV2, CV3, etc. Why am I doing this, shit starts to add up. Wish they would just say when and what CV1 is targeting.

You get your order to go through Durante?

As long as each one is a massive improvement, bring it on!

It's like the glorious 90s of PC hardware again :P

Yeah, sounds about right. Seems very impressive for $350, and no doubt the CV1 will be cheaper. Very cool.

The Verge is saying the consumer version will have even higher resolution: http://www.theverge.com/2014/3/19/5524972/oculus-reveals-virtual-reality-development-kit-2-announced. Not sure where they got that info from but in the interviews I've read / seen Oculus also seems to be emphasising that the consumer version will be another significant step up. So it might still be worth waiting, especially if it's out by Christmas.

Mah n-word! About time we move on from 1920x1080, so 2008
