Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 announced, up for preorder (based on Crystal Cove)

Morpheus doesn't work on PC, and Rift doesn't work on PS4.

It doesn't matter at all that Sony might launch first.

Given that consoles still outnumber gaming PC I say it does matter, and nintendo launched the nes before sega's master system in NA and it made all the difference in the world

WTF. I'll try again in FF, if it doesn't work I guess I'll fire up IE for the first time since setting up my PC :P
I wouldn't even bother trying FF again, i tried it at least 40 times and got the same error every single time, i think their token system is borked for anything other than IE for paypal transactions.
Fire up IE and get it ordered!

I just now finally managed to order as well!

It worked now though, I think it was just by chance that it started working when you tried IE :P

The same is true for Oculus, although they are very open about specifics such as latency with figures and emphasise these point and the power it takes.
I don't know how you can claim that, when you know they refused to reveal CC's refresh rate.

They've been no more transparent about it than Sony.

But what difference does that make?

You mean because PS4 has VR, Rift just lost the complete PS4 install base? VR was never going to divert meaningful numbers of people to the PC with the CV1 anyway. It's a device primarily for the high end core PC gamer market, and we'll see expansion over many years from that.

Studios are working on it. Software is in the making (for a year at least). They proclaimed very clearly that Sony themselves will seed the initial software lineup with more and more third-party releases to follow. Do they have a devkit for every studio out there today? No but that will change closer to summer.

Good luck to them then. Oculus isn't going anywhere.

But DK2 is arriving this summer, when will the consumer version come out? Is it even gonna make it to Q1/Q2 2015?

Well in on of the interviews he says if DK1 was 0% then DK2 is 70%. Assuming CV1 is 100%, i'm guessing less than a year away. He did once that if CV1 isn't out by the end of 2015 something has gone horribly wrong

Didn't they? They were coy about it when it was first unveiled because the news of their cusom low persistence screens wasn't out there. But I'm certain the refresh rate was revealed not even two days later.

Possibly, would certainly explain the paypal option not showing up, weirdly it was still showing up in firefox going through the order process, but if i used the edit details button on the confirmation page, it wouldn't list paypal there.

Ah well, looking forward to messing with it, my DK1 got a hell of a lot of use but extended development with it on made me feel sick because of the disconnect between lateral motion and tilt (fixed position rotation syndrome).

I wonder if it'll come in a fancy case like the DK1?

It's not the resolution that will help eye strain really. That mostly helps with clarity.

The low persistence and fast refresh rate of the new screen is what really helps in this new dev kit.

This dev kit runs at 75 Hz. Note that they said today they want to get the consumer version up to 90 Hz (along with higher resolution). If you aren't a developer, it's probably a good idea to wait. The consumer version will be even less prone to motion sickness than DK2 (which is apparently a massive improvement from DK1 -- can't wait to try it for myself).

That would be pretty sweet. Having to handle dual 1080P displays at 90hz (which i assume would require locked 90fps under best conditions) might be a bit much for a lot of systems though.

I'm almost sure the final version will support multiple refresh rates. The DK2 already supports 60, 72 and 75 Hz. Why not add 80, 85 and 90 on top of that?

Dual 1080p screens? It's only one screen split in half for each eye.

One of the best things about the VR-age will be developers optimizing their games from framerate and resolution rather than fancy effects.

Me and Nzyme32 were both looking for it and we couldn't find it, maybe they did, but they were open about resolution, FoV and low persistence in interviews I found where they still wouldn't disclose refresh rate.

Mine is BM-4102310. and that was ordered just before yours, some others don't have the BM but instead different letters (guessing ours is BM due to paypal)
Yeah, could be. BM for "Bum" because you pay with Paypal? :P

That, and input-to-pixel latency. And it kills online streaming. What's not to like?

Hmm.. I thought so. 960 x 1080 on each eye on this DK2. People were riling on the Morpheus for being like that.

960x1080 is the spec of the consumer Morpheus headset to be released in 2015 though right? If Morpheus was being released in July of this year with 960x1080 per eye and then updated to higher resolution in 2015 like Rift DK2/CV1 then I doubt people would have been complaining.

I don't have the funds for it right now but as soon as the final retail product is out I'm buying it asap.

It might even get me interested in Titanfall.

Will this or consumer version be compatible with any video source? Will I be able to plug in HDMI from PC or console and play with controller in surround screen? I can't do head tracking (long shitty medical story).

That's a pretty decent price. The one thing they seem to be saving for the consumer version is how it actually fits on your head. I assume the final version will have more than just a strap around your head. :P Seems it's heavier than DK1. I've never used one of these things but I do wonder how comfortable they are at this stage.

You mean like Onlive?

The consumer version is probably going to have even better image quality.

The Rift is incompatible with traditional signals. The image has to be distorted to account for the lenses in the Rift.

Excited as hell, might even motivate me to finish the game i was working on that mixed binaural audio with survival horror!
Also, it's kinda sad, but i'm looking forward to having the DK1, DK2 and eventually the CV1 in my little video gaming collection someday.

Ordered it to tinker around with. I'm not expecting much lasting value since if the consumer model is better and the thing is awesome I'll upgrade. But fuck it, everyone's been talking about this forever and whenever I go to trade shows the lines to try this are too goddamn insane to wait in, so I'll just pay the $400 so I can finally test it out.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck! I want it, but I know I will regret buying this version. I also know i'll regret not buying it. I wish I had a friend who would get it, but I feel like i'm going to go years without actually experiencing VR for myself.

EDIT: I did it. Too late now universe! I'm living a little!

ah man I love binaural audio, really hope VR pushes devs to implement into to games in the future, glad at least Sony seemed to realize how important this is with Morpheus.

If you have the PC to use it properly, get this. Who knows when PS4 VR will actually come out. You'll likely have this, this year. It really depends on how badly you want VR and how long you can wait.
Rift would be a cheaper option for me.. dont have a PS4 yet But I do have a gaming PC
