Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 announced, up for preorder (based on Crystal Cove)

Was wondering, could someone gather the list of gaffers who bought the DK2 and what their current rig is composed of and if they plan to upgrade.

Got my dk2 and i'll be getting the Morpheus too! Why not?

I7 3770k
7970
16 gig of ram

Not upgrading anytime soon. Video card if anything at all.

So, I can't be a fan of both Sony and OR? I just dropped 370 bones on the DK2 and planning on upgrading my video card along with planning on getting the Morpheus.

You're the one who's seeming to be threatened by Sony for some reason. If I were you, I'd be more worried about MS buying OR outright.
I think the amusing thing here is that you are under the impression that "AAA" by whatever definition of the term, means good VR content. That is not what is compelling about VR. I don't doubt that they will be good experiences, but I'd bet smaller devs will be producing better content and in a few years you'll define them as "AAA"

....sorry I fucking hate that term

smaller devs will be the first out with interesting ideas, as we've sort of been seeing. a fully fledged AAA VR exclusive is going to take a lot of time and investment. smaller experiences are really going to bring the variety, on both the Rift AND Morpheus. I mean, look at the shark thing sony are showing off. Sell that for $10 or whatever and I'd buy it.

Do the OLEDs they're using degrade in color quality over time like other OLEDs?

By the nature of the technology itself all OLED panels degrade in color quality. Different sub-pixels degrade at different rates with blue generally degrading the quickest.

I was just trying to argue that any significant investment in VR development by a top publisher will only really be done by Sony since they have eggs in the basket. I just don't get why people are against Sony getting in on VR. I support both companies. I want both companies to succeed.

Well, nobody even knows what the final specs of the consumer version will be.

All I can say is, it will handle DK2 just fine.

Well, some gaffers are saying 1440p and my jaw is just dropping on how much power that will require.

I'm sure small teams will be doing great stuff, but I also want big budget, hundred+ man team, high production value VR content. Having Sony in the market increases the chance of that happening because it increases the potential install base. So I'm glad they are in, even if I never buy the Sony product.

Definitely, there's so much good stuff out there. I have to wonder if VR would be enjoyable for longer play sessions. Especially with highly stressful or horror style experiences, perhaps shorter is

For sure, I just don't think AAA is a requirement for success of a platform like VR

I don't think anyone is against it. As long as they make sure they have a solid device, it's fantastic news for everyone. I don't think AAA and high fidelity are the be all end all of VR. There is so much more to be explored. Personally, I'm interested in seeing how different art styles are used, surreal worlds and genres that don't even exist yet

Ordered my DK2 at about 11:45AM EST (within the first hour)

Q9550 @ 3.6GHz
4GB DDR3 1600
GTX 580 2GB

Definitely a little overdue for an upgrade, but there still isn't too much that is really making me overhaul it, even though I game on a 30" panel. I'm expecting the rift to maybe be that last push once it arrives

I have no plans to upgrade, i think my PC is good enough to handle games @1080p/75fps.
Worst case, drop some of the performance impacting details from its highest settings to medium. (Things like shadows and reflection can be performance impacting).

i3930k @4.6Ghz
16GB RAM
2GB 680GTX overclocked edition (ASUS)

it's going to be a personal thing. I played Doom 3 BFG for hours at a time. It gave me heart palpitations a couple of times... like ACTUAL ones. But I loved it. I don't think everyone will be game for *that*, but once you get acclimatized, you won't have much trouble playing for two or three hours at a time.

but then other people won't even play the Ravenholme chapter of HL2 in their DK1... which... hah... is only going to get even scarier as we go through DK2 to CV1.

I want to order it but I was shocked by the VAT and Shipping.

350$ for Oculus
55$ shipping
85$ VAT

Makes a total of $490 dollars to ship it to me, and for 350 dollars i've would buy it (and a bit extra for shipping) but 490 dollars is a bit to much for a extra "toy"

Same for me but in the end it's 350 euros with the change so.. fair enough i guess.

Already released full games with native support:
- Half Life 2
- TF2
- Strike Suit Zero
- Hawken
- War Thunder
- iRacing

Until DK2 ships it should be a few more.

The Oculus API is already designed for supporting multiple HW models from the start, so old software should be compatible with newer HW and the other way around. Stuff developed for DK1 will have to be updated for positional tracking though.

Don't forget Euro Truck Simulator 2:

What happened to waiting Canti??? :p

I don't know. If I can get $250 for the original Devkit, that's just an additional $120 I've spent, which isn't as big of a deal.

If I completely space off selling it and have to pay the entire $370 for a mid-step between DK and CV, I'll cry a bit.

Maybe Oculus will provide estimates based on the time ordered. I managed to complete an order about one hour after this thread was opened (which I hope was immediately after pre-orders were opened!)

I don't want to start any drama but have the specs of this been compared with the Morph spec-wise? If they are comparable, they can cross-develop easily, and live off each other.

It'll depend on the API. It doesn't seem like both companies really want to cooperate with each other..

Ah jesus... $550 AUD once it accounts for shipping and taxes.

But why the fuck is it charging my taxes when I'm in Australia? I'm only charged on GST once imports reaches $1000... fishy as fuck.

Real Palmer confirmation about higher res in CK1

"If you are not a developer, do not buy DK2. The consumer version will be higher resolution, lower weight, lower latency, higher framerate"

Evil still, DK2 looks pretty incredible. People were asking about the connector beside the USB port earlier. Palmer explains that it will be a connection for an external power adapter. Power will be supplied through the USB on PC's, but for some PC's or devices that don't have compliant enough power through the USB, then there will be an optional power adapter cord.

So does the Doom 3 BFG version that's on Steam have full Rift support right now?

You have to use a mod, and it's a bit tricky to configure, but once set up it works excellently. The only headaches are cutscenes being screwy, and certain keycodes being hard (or impossible in at least one case) to read when playing in VR mode. Print out a list of cabinet / door codes and keep them to hand.

Gameplay works perfectly though, and is an absolute blast.

the mod ONLY works with the BFG edition of Doom.

I'd hazard a guess the vast majority of the gaffer demographic buying a DK2 have plans to upgrade to a 860Ti, 870, or 880. People been waiting for that a long ass time for Maxwell at this point.

Just ordered. About when should I be expecting it to ship?

They said first come first served and rumor is the site started taking orders around 8:15 AM PDT.

Now it depends on the amount they plan on having. I am fairly certain I am in the first batch at 8:29 because a bunch of people at the earliest got screwed and had to reorder. But I got an order number and confirmation so keeping hopeful. They all could have gone in 5 minutes for all we know.

Wait they're not cutting it off at a certain number are they? I would assume people would just get shuffled to the next batch like during the kick starter.

No idea but I did not mean to imply that. I simply meant the first shipping batch is all.

My machine if people are tracking:

HD 6870
16 GB DDR3
i5-3570k
SSD

my guess is video card will need updating. Waiting until DK2 is here before seeing what my options are.

i7 2600k
GTX 570
8 GB RAM

I was waiting for 20 nm for a full upgrade but now I'm not sure what to do. Any suggestions?

If I were them I would ASAP. Add some driver hackery in conjunction with support in the major middleware to make it work. SLIVR and CrossVR. I can already see it.

The people early adopting VR are the same people who'll spend too much money on your HW :P

Got this from Oculus forum..

https://developer.oculusvr.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=3926

They say the SLI/Crossfire issue been blown out of proportion.

The problem is real, but it's mostly be blown out of proportion.

I used to run a GTX 690 on my work machine, and I did not notice any micro-stutter on any Rift demos. Granted the performance was so high that I was likely still above 60FPS at all times, even with the stutter. I did end up switching it out for a GTX 680 due to compatibility issues, so I do agree that single GPU is a safer option.

However, I also run GTX 470s in SLI at home, and I haven't had any complaints. I think the SLI support has become a lot better than what it used to be a few years ago. That said, I do see small stutters from time to time, but it's not enough to be a show stopper.

So the best advice if you are buying a video card is to get the most expensive single GPU card you can afford. However, if you are looking for a cheap upgrade, and your board supports dual-cards, then jumping on SLI/Crossfire is not a death wish.

I have SLI GTX 670s. I run everything on max settings and have never experienced this "micro stutter". I also hit 60fps on pretty much everything apart from Crysis 3. I've had some slight pauses with high memory texture loading (skyrim mods) but that's about all.

When you use SLI with a clone display setting (as I did with my rift) it says it may not function at 100% or whatever. I never had any issues which I couldn't put down to sloppy demo programming.

One thing to keep note;

Another important thing to note is if you can achieve a higher FPS over which the VR headsets refresh rate can achieve (usually 60Hz,75Hz so 60-75FPS respectively) then Microstutter shouldn't be observed unless the frame rate drops below the refresh rate of the screen.

I7 2700K and AMD 7970 here.
All the games/demos that I've played on my Dev-kit 1 run fine at 1080p so I should be ok with the new kit. We will have to wait to see how the new games for VR are going to push the hardware. I'm not upgrading atm.

Fuck that's rough. I got excited when I saw that $350 price tag but I guess we Australians get raw end of the deal again.

I'm planning an expensive PC build in December. It's not like the Dev Kit 2 is going to drop in price before then. I can get some mileage out of it with my current HD7970 system in the mean time. I already know what kind of performance I can expect at 1920 x 1080 with AA using VR as you can feed the current rift a 1080p (or 1920 x 1200) input. Most things work okay on my dated CPU, although some things struggle a bit.
